And of course, it helps you because it helps us keep bringing you these stories every day. Now, y'all, as has happened in so many of the more liberal cities, think Chicago, think New York City. Now, we're seeing in Seattle a battle between the mayor and the police, y'all. Now, this probably should not come as a surprise as the blue cities not so long ago, just recently had a mantra, a saying if you will, which was defund the police. They like battling the police. Y'all think about when ICE go to their cities. They all want to battle ICE. They want to battle their own police departments. And in this video, you're going to see that even technology and policies that help them catch criminals, help help people who have been shot, they're not so they're not so in favor of that, y'all.

[00:01:04]Your girl Katie Wilson, she's going to say it's because she wants to protect the migrants. So So somehow that has something to do with it. You'll see that here today. And this is causing a major kurfuffle among her office and the Seattle police. They're battling.

[00:01:19]They're battling, y'all. You're going to see that here. And also, y'all, her administration continues to deteriorate with another highprofile departure, y'all. Another person who's working with her, who's no longer working with her. It's been a rough go of it for your girl, y'all. She's only been the mayorist for a few months. And uh yeah, things have been, let's say, rocky. We'll just use the word rocky.

[00:01:44]So, we're going to update you on all of that. We're going to start with the battle between her and the police. So, we're going to start actually with this video that led to the battle. We'll get to the battle and then this high-profile departure, y'all. Without further ado, let's go ahead and get into it. This was the post from the Seattle Police Officers Guild on May 18th. It featured a video of three people being shot outside a busy nightclub with the caption, "Mayor Katie, how many more examples do you need?" don't take away the vital tools officers rely on to identify, locate, and apprehend violent criminals in our city. In reference to surveillance cameras that feed into the city's real-time crime center, the next morning, this email was sent by the mayor's staff to SPOG president Kentlu, saying the post quote appears to violate SVD policy regarding real-time crime center cameras and Seattle municipal code that bars recorded information from being used for political purposes with the instruction, "Please pull the post immediately." So, that shooting that you just saw there, three triple shooting, y'all. I mean, this should not be normal. Okay, I I don't like to use the word should in this context a whole lot.

[00:02:52]So, I'm trying to be careful with my usage of the word should, but I think we can all agree that triple shootings should not be normal in the United States of America. But unfortunately, they are, especially in certain areas.

[00:03:04]And now it's leading to this breakdown, further breakdown between the mayor and her police department.

[00:03:11]>> President of the Seattle Police Officers Guild accuses the office of Mayor Katie Wilson of trying to violate the union's right to free speech.

[00:03:17]>> The mayor's office told union leaders to delete a recent social media post that criticized Wilson after a recent triple shooting on Capitol Hill.

[00:03:26]>> Yeah, the Seattle Police Officers Guild has been critical of city leadership for years. Their social media feed is full of that. But one recent post really touched a nerve at the mayor's office and it now has a police union saying they've been accused of violating the law and police policy. But today their leader says they're not backing down.

[00:03:42]>> So this shot spotter technology is the subject of a lot of controversy. Of course the police want it. It helps them to know when shots ring out and have an idea from which direction they may have come. But the mayorist, y'all, the mayorist, I'm going to remind you of something she said recently. She said she doesn't want the migrants to somehow be targeted with technology. So, she wants to limit technology because some people might try to use it to get people out of the country who are in the country without permission. So, if you remember, she was recently interviewed about shots that rang out close to her during a press conference or some sort of appearance. One of her people came up and tried to stop the reporter from asking about that. And then when the reporter was finally able to get the question to the mayoris, she let it be known that she needs to protect the migrants, y'all. That's what this is all about.

[00:04:39]>> And we also have to be very careful to make sure that our data um storage, security, sharing practices uh don't make that system vulnerable to misuse and abuse, whether that's by federal immigration enforcement or by other uh bad actors. Um and so for that reason like that is why we are doing a uh data and privacy audit before we move forward with uh expanding CC TV surveillance.

[00:05:02]>> So officials with the police are saying look Katie I mean come on we're here to fight crime this technology is helping us. And also if we don't think you're doing a good job we have the freedom of speech to speak out against you. But in most cities y'all the mayor is the head of the local police. So, you do have to ask yourself the question, does the mayor have the right as the head of the police to say, "Hey, we don't do that.

[00:05:28]We don't speak out that way here in this city." I think it's an interesting question.

[00:05:32]>> When this line here says, "Please pull the post immediately." How did you interpret that?

[00:05:36]>> Oh, that's an order. I looked at the content of the email. I thought, "Well, that sounds like a threat."

[00:05:40]>> But Spock President Kent Loo says the mayor's office was wrong about where the video came from. The video was publicly sourced from KOMO4 from a post I think you made yourself. And we were very clear upfront of where we source this video from. Again, providing them the the public link so they could view it themselves. And in no way do I feel like I'm being unprofessional by alerting the public to a publicly sourced video pointing to the fact that these work and these capture good data for us.

[00:06:08]Wilson has paused the expansion of city-owned surveillance cameras, a decision that has drawn her a lot of criticism from people who say these cameras are an essential tool to investigate crimes in a city with a police staffing crisis. And y'all, in the midst of her kurfuffle with her own police department, your girl, the mayor, is also seeing high-profile departures from her administration. her homelessness zar, one of the people in her homelessness, her homelessness administration or department. You know, the people whose job it is is to help people get off the streets. He like, "Yeah, I'm out. Yeah, I'm I'm not dealing with this anymore. I'm going go ahead and I'm going go ahead and do something else with my life, y'all."

[00:06:51]Now, mind you, they say in Seattle this is one of the top priorities among the people like among the re like among the regular citizenry.

[00:07:01]Think about that. What if you lived in a place that had so much homelessness that like what are the top things on your mind are the homeless people, y'all? I mean, just think I mean I have a hard time I I don't live in a place like that. I have a hard time even capturing that in my mind. Mayor Katy Wilson, senior adviser on housing and homelessness policy, has resigned from his role effective next week. This comes as questions still remain on the mayor's goals for a thousand beds to house those living on city streets. Come Tyler Cunnington live tonight in Seattle with the latest from city officials and how shelter stakeholders feel. Tyler, well, President John Grant has been serving on Mayor Wilson's staff throughout her term so far. It's unclear specifically why he resigned at this point in time. We tried to ask the mayor about the situation at a public event she was at this afternoon. However, she was not able to find the time to speak with us. This all of course in light of her ongoing goals to try to add more city beds to the uh supply here within the city. And all the meanwhile, people who are on the ground working in these spaces say they are concerned about where those goals stand.

[00:08:04]>> And just as a bit of context, my people, uh Katie Wilson's administration has been shaken up. It's been all shaken and all stirred, y'all. like a martini.

[00:08:14]Katie Wilson's administration is all shaken up. It's all stirred. Again, only a few months on the job, y'all. And uh let's just take a look at some of the other shaking and stirring that has happened in recent weeks.

[00:08:28]>> Mayor Katy Wilson announces changes to her senior level staff after local insiders say there was friction between the city council and members of the mayor's team. Mayor Katie Wilson announcing changes to her senior team with longtime friend and colleague from the transit riders union Kate Brunette Croitzer transitioning from being chief of staff to a special projects role with a highle staffer Esther Handy replacing her. Wilson also giving deputy mayor Brian Surat a more centralized handle on city council relations. Kosik says these moves only come after months of brewing friction that he has heard between the council and the mayor's staffers as they work towards Wilson's goal of creating 10,000 shelter units in 2026. So the thing that immediately led to this was a blow up internally over this these three key pieces of legislation that the mayor's office had proposed around building her signature initiative.

[00:09:16]>> It's also why he says Croitzer, the former chief of staff, is likely moving away from her role while staying as a close adviser to the mayor and why Brian Serat, the city hall veteran and businessfriendly deputy mayor, is taking on the majority of council communications. While this is expected and this is normal, in this case, it appears to follow a period of ruffling of feathers internally in city hall.

[00:09:37]>> So yeah, y'all, your girl Katie Wilson, she's all shaken up and all stirred in her administration. She's battling with the police. But you know, one thing she one thing she's absolutely doing right, one thing she's absolutely doing, y'all, she's protecting the people who are in the country without permission. Y'all, that seems to be the priority in so many cities right now. And mind you, I've I've said many times, I'm just going to repeat it here. I think when somebody's out on the street, they don't have food, even if they even if they are in the country without permission. I don't think you can let people sleep on the streets. I don't think you can let people go hungry. A lot of people would say, "Don't give them anything." Yeah.

[00:10:18]But we have to be humanitarian about it, right? But when it comes to protecting your community, when it comes to using technology that may inadvertently help identify people who are in the country without permission, you know what? You know what they can do about that? They can either get permission or they could just not be in the country. It's simple.
