[00:00:28]Yes, today we're going to take a look at the Monkey Business Journey to the West, which is a series that I have created just to have a little bit of a different direction looking at the story of the Journey to the West, which is one of the four very famous novel of the Chinese era. Right, so which is including your Three Kingdom. Right, so San Guo Yan Yi.

[00:00:56]Right, so which is very famous. Shui Hu Zhuan, Water Margin. Of course, you know, Journey to the West and another one that guys like to read one, which is Jin Ping Mei, I think. Whatever it is.

[00:01:07]Right, so how's everybody doing? Right, so there's Pack Oi there. I see that Peter is around. PJ Koh is around.

[00:01:12]Kelvin is around. Yan Yi is around. Ka Hing is around. How you guys all doing?

[00:01:17]Right, so um story from the Journey to the West. And now Journey to the West is a so famous.

[00:01:23]It's about the Sun Wukong. Right, so now although Journey to the West is a centralized around Tang Sanzang, but Sun Wukong happened to be the uh psychic.

[00:01:37]Right, the protagonist that happened to take over the entire show. So there's actually more legend about Sun Wukong than the rest of the team. Tang Sanzang, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Seng act together. Sun Wukong got more story than the rest of the team. Right, so now today we're going to be looking at the pretty much the end part of the entire 81 difficulties storyline where they receive what we call this moji tingshu. Moji tingshu mean the word wordless scripture.

[00:02:15]Right, those are the where they get conned and you know, take it. Right, so we will take a look at it from a different perspective. Right, so of course the storyline, you know, is there to tell a story, but there is actually a deeper story behind the storyline. The rest of the Journey to the West that I've shared with everybody. So come, let me shrink myself down to this smaller version as usual.

[00:03:48]All right, so now um after they have traveled for so long after they've traveled for so long, very long, they actually traveled from the Chang'an.

[00:03:58]And so, from the Chang'an, they need to go to the west, you know, da da da da da cross a lot of the desert, and then make a round downward. You guys know India is technically below You guys know Buddhism come from India, right? They are part of it, no need to explain. Buddhism originate from India because there is a Kunlun mountain on top.

[00:04:20]Uh they cannot travel straight away to China. No way for them to travel straight, at least the technology back then.

[00:04:25]Right? So, going through the south also not very practical because of the dense forest. Right? So, the only way where the land is clear is that, you know, go towards Europe, Europe, round back towards China. That's the only way for them to do so. Right? So, uh Um the the Indian has been coming over to the Europe-China side for some time already. So, they have been sharing Buddhism with the local people for a long time. So, after quite a lot of time of sharing, the Tang Dynasty is when Buddhism was first adopted in a major manner. Right? So, the people in the Tang Dynasty are actually the Tang Dynasty king. They said they they find that a lot of the scripture is very messy.

[00:05:16]Yeah, because it's all transmitted through oral, and then, you know, you take a look at the scripture, people cannot read at that time. So, it's very difficult. So, what did they do is that they commission uh Mr. Mr. Tang Tang Tang Sanzang.

[00:05:33]Right? So, no, actually he has a tower in Xi'an. He has a tower in Xi'an that, you know, commemorate him. He's a real person, by the way. That's it, he's a real person, you know. The monkey, the pig, and the Saturn aside he a real person. Right, so uh make the big travel over to India to this uh what we call a uh uh a Lei- Lei-Yin Su, Lei-Yin Su, you know, a Thunder Clap Temple to pick uh the original scripture, you know, so that they know what it is about, right?

[00:06:06]So, it's basically this particular story that has been ultra glorified.

[00:06:13]Or else you won't be buying and reading it.

[00:06:15]That's been ultra glo- glorified, believe, right? So, this is the part whereby, you know, they have already gone through all the difficulties and they reach the foot hill of this Lei-Yin Su. Right? So, it's a very grand thingy, you know, going there, right?

[00:06:31]So, this is the, you know, I have achieved my dream, you know, my my my job is done, you know? No no nobody ever wondered that, you know, the trip back.

[00:06:41]Why don't she talk about the trip back?

[00:06:44]As in how how the hell, you know, they managed to, you know, get back? You know, maybe Sun Wukong just carry everybody and, you know, just jump over the mountain. He has the capability to do that.

[00:06:54]Uh but, you know, if that doesn't happen means that, you know, in actual sense Sun Wukong doesn't really exist.

[00:07:00]Zhu Bajie doesn't really exist.

[00:07:03]Sha Seng doesn't really exist, but the monk does exist though, right? So, it took the entire journey about 14 years for him to go and come back.

[00:07:11]Which is not a short period of time.

[00:07:14]Right? But he managed to go back. Right?

[00:07:16]So, this is the part whereby, you know, he managed to reach. Right? So, this is a lot of time a lot of people let's say from us is after you have gone through all the studying, you know, your primary school, your secondary school, you finish your university, you graduate, this is like the time where you first land your job.

[00:07:37]Ah, you know, that particular happiness of, you know, oh, now I'm already.

[00:07:44]You know, I've got my first job. I'm going to have my income, you know, I'm going to be able to do this. I'm going to be able to do that, you know, it's it's that sort of uh thing, right? So, this is also the time whereby, you know, you get slapped by reality.

[00:07:57]>> [laughter] >> So, now what happened is that, you know, uh they managed to get to this particular point and they went up and, you know, they saw Buddha. All right, so they saw Buddha. All right, so then, of course, you know, as usual, there are the normal pleasantries. You know, the Buddha, you know, received them, you know, uh chit-chatted with them, you know, telling them about this, telling them about that.

[00:08:17]All right, this they tell Buddha about, you know, oh, you know, come here, da da da. Buddha pretending to not knowing what it is about.

[00:08:25]Yeah, man, right? So, all all the difficulty was actually engineered by this group of fellow anyway. They are the one who engineered everything.

[00:08:33]All right, so when they reach there, they talk talk talk talk talk, da da da.

[00:08:35]In the end, they say that, you know, hey, you know, we are here to basically to get the original scripture. Uh so that, you know, we can bring it back to uh the Tang Dynasty there to be properly translated. So, they will be able to fresh cross-reference between the rest of the fractured scripture that we have, information that we have, so that we have the most original intention of Buddha.

[00:09:01]Uh so, sounds very good. All right, so now what happened is that uh they were told that, "Okay, you know, like this uh you you follow my two assistants." All right, you follow my two assistants, you know, you guys going to go to the So, as normal, you know, Chinese always got this place called Chongjing Gong.

[00:09:16]Chongjing Gong is the library.

[00:09:19]All right, Chongjing Gong is uh scripture storage corner.

[00:09:25]Direct translation.

[00:09:27]All right, scripture storage corner. All right, so there's these two assistants that actually bring them there, right?

[00:09:32]So, while the two assistants bring them to the uh storage place, right? So, the two assistant was hinting very strongly that, you know, "Hey, you know, you come over here, you know, you want to take this sort of stuff, you know, we need we need certain uh, what do you call, gift.

[00:09:50]Right? We need certain, uh, tribute. We need certain contribution here, you know, before we can." So, openly is that they're asking for bribe, la, the way that, you know, we understand things today.

[00:10:02]Right? So, they understand for bribe, you know, but Tang Sanzang being Tang Sanzang, right? So, he doesn't understand the subtle hinting that was given by them.

[00:10:14]Right? So, no, the flirting that, you know, "Oh, no, cannot be. No, cannot be like this one." Right? So, this is a place of God. This is a place of Buddha.

[00:10:23]Right? So, no, yeah, you know, cannot be, you know, Buddha cannot be like this money facing.

[00:10:30]Yeah.

[00:10:30]Right? So, that's what he think, right?

[00:10:31]So, so, in the end he refused, la, as usual, he refused. He used, you know, he he stand by his principle. Right? So, after certain amount negotiation, the two, uh, disciple, right? So, you want to call the two disciple, the two assistant, you know, also felt very frustrated already, you know.

[00:10:49]Went in, you know, they grabbed some of the scripture and then, you know, they passed it to Tang Sanzang. Just give it to him.

[00:10:54]Right? So, Tang Sanzang was, you know, very happy, right? So, very happy that he stood his ground.

[00:10:59]Right? Very happy that, you know, the, uh, what we call the, uh, people inside they have seen his way, right? So, he think that he did the right job. And he managed to get some scripture, right? Understand is some scripture. Right? So, they actually got the, what you want to say is fake scripture also can, whatever, this also can. Right? So, and then, uh, they left the place happily ever after.

[00:11:22]All right?

[00:11:23]I got my fan around me. I actually got the Okay.

[00:11:27]You can sit here the fan and, you know, we turn off the fan.

[00:11:31]>> [laughter] >> Okay? Now better.

[00:11:35]Right, uh there is fan on top of him.

[00:11:37]Okay, and so let's just turn it back up.

[00:11:39]So, it's fine. All right, so now back to this one. Okay, now uh this part of it done already, then what happened is that, you know, they went off, right? So, they went off uh riding the No, no, no, it's okay, right?

[00:11:52]So, don't worry about, you know, the fan is basically fine. It won't kill me, you know, right? So, uh they're going to white ride the this uh white um tortoise, right? So, now the white tortoise is actually the tortoise that brought them across one of the river, one of the river, where are the big river across to this particular side of the map, right? So, now uh now this one we need to rewind back a little bit on the uh first crossing. Right? So, the first crossing, right? Uh when the tortoise brought them over here, the tortoise actually asked Xuanzang, that, "Hey, when you went and see Buddha that time, right? Uh help me out a bit, help me out a bit, right? So, can you go and ask Buddha, you know, how long am I supposed to get stuck here?

[00:12:34]Right? So, you know that every single uh demon, every single things that is inside this entire story was actually staged by the Buddha and his gang.

[00:12:46]All the bad guy also basically they are their people, right? So, I'm going to ask, you know, ask Buddha, you know, how long how long am I supposed to be stuck here?

[00:12:54]Right? Before I can ascend to the next level.

[00:12:58]Right? So, you know, then Xuanzang tell Okay, can ask small matter, you know, later, you know, when I see Buddha, I'll ask.

[00:13:04]So, uh as you guys must know, the fella couldn't be bothered, did not ask Buddha about this particular question. So, when they were riding the turtle going back that time, you know, right about the center of the river, as usual, right?

[00:13:18]So, story is always like that.

[00:13:20]Then the turtle come and ask, "Hey, you know, guys, all right? So, you're seeing Buddha already, I know, so I see that I see guys, you know, got got quite a lot of stuff, you know, coming back, right? So, very happy. Right? So, hey, uh so, what happened, huh? How how how long am I supposed to be stuck here?

[00:13:36]Then only Xuanzang realized that he forgot to ask about this. Well, of course, you know, the turtle no friend already, huh? So, you know, ask you to do something so simple, just ask Buddha, you know, how long am I going to stuck here, so you forgot to do. Right? So, now what happened? The turtle threw tantrum, huh? Normal, huh?

[00:13:54]It's very normal, huh? Especially when you ask something that's so simple.

[00:13:57]Right? You know, just go and ask the boss, you know, about this, and then you come back, you tell them that you couldn't be bothered about it.

[00:14:03]Right? So, you know, what happened that the turtle just toppled all of them into the river.

[00:14:07]I couldn't be bothered to carry you across the river. You you you your problem, guys. Yeah.

[00:14:12]Just threw them onto the river. So, of course, you know, as the story progresses, you know, they end up back at the other side of the river, and because everything was wet, they have to open it up to dry it, huh?

[00:14:24]And once they open up they dry it, then only they found out that, "Hey, you know, the entire thing was all empty."

[00:14:33]Maybe the ink got washed off, huh?

[00:14:36]Right? The entire thing was empty, you know? So, it's like they they were no scripture inside, there were no wording inside. So, then only they start to realize that, "Hey, something must be wrong here."

[00:14:45]You know, uh maybe, you know, maybe the guy at the temple passes the wrong thing, huh?

[00:14:52]Right? So, you know, yeah, you know, that's basically the thinking. So, what happened is that they have to follow everything back to the temple, and they talk to the Buddha, right? So, of course, you know, they brought up the entire things about yeah, the disciple asking for gift and also money on this, right? So, his hope is that Buddha Buddha would do the right thing, you know, saying that, "Oh, this particular thing is wrong, you know. Yeah, you know, they basically gave you the, you know, wrong thing."

[00:15:22]right? So, it's like that. So, nice here.

[00:15:24]Uh a lot of us in life uh somehow is this naive when it come to facing and laughing you.

[00:15:32]We all believe this thing called justice. You know, we are we are all raised by a system that tell us that, you know, there's this thing called doing the right thing.

[00:15:44]But when you are out in the real world, uh you will start to know that whatever that you have learned in school does not drive with how the real world actually function and run.

[00:15:56]Right? So, you know, like for example, you know, asking for this sort of gift, you know, what we label this as bright thing, you know.

[00:16:04]A lot of people may say, "Oh, this is a wrong thing to do." But you think about it properly.

[00:16:09]If you have something valuable, why would the other party is entitled to get it for free?

[00:16:18]Explain to me that.

[00:16:21]Right? So, this is like asking you to come to work in my organization, and I'm not going to pay you uh a salary because, you know, you got something that valuable, you just give it out, you know. Why why do you need me to compensate you in term of salary?

[00:16:33]When you are doing that that time, right, you don't say that it is a bright one.

[00:16:36]You don't say that, you know, I'm asking for bright from my employee. No.

[00:16:41]I say, "Oh, no, this is a fair exchange, you know." But you know, when you are, you know, trying to ask for a uh scripture, right? So, you know, then, you know, the fellow ask you for certain things, you know, you say that, you know, "Oh, no, this is not This is not how it works." So, uh the Buddha actually explain this to them.

[00:16:59]Telling them that, you know, all these scripture are basically things of value.

[00:17:03]Right? So, and if you want things of value, right, you have to give in value.

[00:17:07]This is how worlds work.

[00:17:10]It everything in this world work on a what we call um law of equal exchange, right? So, it's a nice way to say that, you know, every single thing that you want, you need to have a certain amount of energy put into it.

[00:17:25]This is not necessarily saying that, you know, uh you need to bribe, but you yourself need to come to the table with stuff before the other party is able to bring their stuff to the table, which is very, very normal. So, your entire thinking pattern of thinking that, you know, oh and now just because, you know, I did certain thing that has nothing to do with the value of the thing that is being offered, you are having the right to end. Uh no thanks to upbringing, uh because, you know, everyone of us was upbringing in a scenario whereby, you know, your parent will give you everything for you giving nothing to the parent. Yeah, children basically, you know, doesn't really give a good ROI.

[00:18:08]Right? But the parents still, you know, give the best to the children. So, you have this particular thinking that, you know, you you have not grown up to the real world. You still think that, you know, there will be people who come and, you know, So, after your parent, you think God is the one that come and do this. So, so many people is like like that, you know, they they start to believe in this God figure and they have this thinking that the God figure will take care of them, whereas they are not doing their part.

[00:18:35]Right? They are basically are not doing their part, right? So, uh the entire thing was explained to Xuanzang and finally Xuanzang mind open up, right? So, and what happened is that he give up the most valuable thing that he had, right? Which is the uh bowl that he used to ask for food, right? So, he asked for food, right? So, uh by the uh Tang Dynasty emperor at that particular time. So, this bowl was given to him. So, I'm currently wondering right now how the hell he carried a gold bowl all over the places and still not get robbed You also start wondering why everybody is coming after him.

[00:19:16]All right, so you swing around uh go through through go around, you know, and you are crossing places whereby you are very poor.

[00:19:26]And also, you know, uh the entire thing he he he somehow managed to hold on to it.

[00:19:34]>> [laughter] >> Okay, story story lah.

[00:19:37]Sorry sorry lah, it's like that, all right? So, then finally, you know, he he he gave this one up. He gave this one up, then Buddha tell him that uh hey guys, uh the original scripture is actually got no wording.

[00:19:49]Right? The scripture that you have was actually the original scripture. Right?

[00:19:53]So, it's original scripture. So, uh what happened here is that we had to uh put in a scripture that's with wording that is actually the um you want to say counterfeit or the second copy. Right? So, that is the second copy that, you know, we send out to the rest of the people. Send out to the rest of the people because the rest of the people is not able their mind is not able to understand the uh what we call the wordless scripture.

[00:20:23]So, the answer is that there is actually no scripture.

[00:20:29]Right? Buddhism doesn't run on a prescribed scripture. Right? So, what supposed to go on to the blank page is your own personal experience when you practice this particular thing. So, that's why, you know, the scripture are all very different. This is also how uh the author um in a way explain why there are different version of Buddhism around.

[00:20:56]Right? So, every single Buddhism that you know, basically is different, all right? The Thailand Buddhism is different, Malaysian Buddhism is different, uh the one that, you know, that's in Tibet is basically the different uh Buddhism, the one in China. China also got I think three to about four different version of Buddha Buddhism, right? So, because the scripture is actually a journal, a journal of the person who is actually practicing Buddha Buddhism. So, if you gone through different experience, you practice it in different manner.

[00:21:28]Uh the scripture will turn out differently. So, of course, you know, the scripture is a bit magical, right?

[00:21:34]So, if chronologizing what is happening to you.

[00:21:38]So, whoever is holding this particular scripture, the story will be written in a very different manner towards that particular person. So, that's why the original scripture is actually empty.

[00:21:52]It is for you to fill up.

[00:21:54]So, it is like a uh an empty journal, an empty diary that was given to uh the people, right? So, and it's for them to basically fill everything up.

[00:22:05]And that become a guidance to whoever come after you that read that's basically, you know, your own story. So, which means that Buddha actually doesn't prescribe anything to you.

[00:22:18]He just tell you, you know, live your live your life, you know? So, because, you know, um a lot of thing about Buddhism is about detachment.

[00:22:25]Right? It's about detachment. So, if you are going to be detached to this particular world, uh I don't think you want to leave anything for them, right? So, it's you know, you experience your life, whatever this at the end.

[00:22:36]Everything go back, you know, and basically everything basically tie up. So, at the same time also, this particular story is a cookie way to talk about the Tang Dynasty uh situation at that time. The Tang Dynasty situation at that time is really the corruption is really that bad.

[00:22:55]You go anywhere, you do anything with any official.

[00:22:58]You have to bribe here, bribe there. You have to pay here, pay there, you know, do do that. And so, that is the what we call underlying culture at that point in time.

[00:23:08]All right. So, you know, this is a way that the author basically talks about the entire idea of what is happening, right? So, the author has borrowed this uh Journey to the West to actually to have a reflection on what we call a satire way of uh talking to the people about what is basically happening around. So, every single story is basically that is to teach you a lesson on the life. So, this particular lesson tells you that nothing comes free.

[00:23:42]All right. So, if you still have the mentality that, you know, I should get something which is for free, right? So, which is a lot of people.

[00:23:49]All right. So, very unfortunate. I think you guys have seen this before. You know, this is a very common scene in the Chinese community.

[00:23:56]All right. So, a lot of people like to do this, which is, you know, to go to temple and make a prayer.

[00:24:01]All right. Manifestation, wish. All right. So, and what they do is that, you know, they bring chicken, they bring pig. All right. So, to them, their mentality thinking is that, you know, all these are my sacrifice. You know, I'll bring a chicken over there. And when they ask for stuff, they're asking for stuff that is way beyond the value of the chicken.

[00:24:21]All right. So, if you guys are on the internet, you know, have seen, you know, TikTok nowadays, you know, it's pretty much, you know, there was somebody who go and ask about you know, all Can you give me a million dollar and then they they put the money in the donation box, right? You know, they probably put 10 bucks inside.

[00:24:36]All right. So, you know, then the Caishenye, right? So, the what we call the God of Wealth, right? Just walk up, come down. Brother, all right. So, you just stop him from putting the money in.

[00:24:45]Brother, no, no, no. Don't don't don't.

[00:24:47]How about I give you 10 bucks, you give me a million?

[00:24:51]All right. So, this one actually this entire part of the story actually highlight what we call the uh law of equivalent exchange. If you want anything at all from this particular world, right? There is a amount of energy that you need to put in.

[00:25:05]So, which means that you have homework that you have to do. You have to do your contribution from one side of the table to balance out whatever that you want from the other side of the table.

[00:25:18]Right? You can only get things whereby you put in an equal amount of effort into it. And also, the word of the scripture tells you that there is no prescribed way of getting things done.

[00:25:31]Right? So, everybody, you know, the way that you do things is basically correct.

[00:25:35]Right? So, it is through your own personal practice. It is through your own personal uh what we call going through all the difficulties that's happening right now that you accumulate that particular humble self of yours to be able to understand what is happening.

[00:25:54]Right? So, you write your own scripture.

[00:25:57]The scripture is not written for you.

[00:25:59]So, that's why I know a lot of people they go and make wishes. Nothing happen.

[00:26:05]Right? Nothing happen. And then the next thing they tell you, "Oh, this thing is basically faith one." Right? So, it's the same thing uh if let's say that you have an employee.

[00:26:13]So, you're the uh supervisor, you're the manager, you're the boss. Right? So, there's two employees that basically come to you.

[00:26:21]Right? So, the two employees, one employee came to you and tell you that, "Oh, no. Oh, this one, no. I don't know how to do."

[00:26:26]And then you ask him, you know, "No, so what are the thing that you have done?"

[00:26:29]Nothing. And another employee come and tell you that, "Hey, you know, boss, uh this one, no. I don't really understand."

[00:26:35]Right? So, you know what happened? Now, I've actually checked here. I've actually done this. I've actually uh learned that. I've actually consulted with this fellow, this fellow, this fellow, and this fellow. And the grand conclusion that I have right now is this, this, this, this, this. And there seems to be still this, this, this that, you know, I'm just not within my area for me to be able to deposit. Can you help me out? So, these two fellow, who will you help?

[00:27:00]Right, pretty simple, ah. The one that who have already done all their homework. So, this is called equivalent exchange. I seen that you have done your part of the job.

[00:27:10]Okay, you have done your part of that you have done the best that you can, right? So, you have analyzed your situation, so you know, and these are the things that, you know, you need need help with versus another person who have not done a single thing.

[00:27:24]Which one will you help? The same thing, ah.

[00:27:26]Right, you go to the temple, you know, you make wishes.

[00:27:30]You do your prayer. Right, so and then, you know, God will also do the same thing, well, basically make an assessment over what are the thing that you have done on your end.

[00:27:39]And what are the thing that I should come and you have not done anything, right? What happened?

[00:27:46]Correct or not? Think about it. Right, so same thing also, you know, somebody come to you, "Hey, you know, let's do this, ah."

[00:27:53]Right, and then tell him ask him, "No, so?"

[00:27:56]No absolute idea. "Oh, I just only have the idea only." Right, so then you expect what everybody will do everything for you. As versus another particular person who come to you, "Hey, you know, guys, I have this particular suggestion and I have already done some research, right? Right, so the research say this this this this this and I will also check out this, check out this, I ask this guy that guy da da da da da da da.

[00:28:17]The entire package is like this. Look like, you know, is you know, we can get it done in such particular manner." And then ask you, "Hey, you want to you want to try it out?"

[00:28:28]Right?

[00:28:29]Two person, ah. One person came with an idea with a definite plan.

[00:28:33]Another person came with an idea and nothing else. Which one which one which one will you which you go for?

[00:28:40]Definitely the one with a definite plan, ah. Right, so because that particular fellow has skin in the game, it's very important, ah, for you to do anything, right now. You need to have the skin in the game.

[00:28:49]Right, don't go out there, you know. So, too many people, you know, manifest, make wishes, make prayer, you know, out of They didn't do anything.
