Weather forecasts predict storm timing and flooding risk by analyzing atmospheric disturbances, soil saturation levels, and river conditions; when soil is already saturated from recent rainfall, even moderate storms can cause significant street flooding, making afternoon and evening storms particularly dangerous for daily activities.

New Orleans Weather: Storms return Monday afternoonAdded:
Our weather impact alert as we start off our Monday, we're expecting some storms later this afternoon. Heavy rain will be our main concern. Secondary concern will be gusty winds. So, if you've got to get things done earlier in the day will be better to do it. As we do kick off our day though, it is nice and quiet, but we do need you on your weather aware kind of status this afternoon. Weather alert and you might have to move the car to higher ground should that rain really get going later on. This is the live view of the French Quarter. We are nice and quiet. The only thing we're tracking is some patchy fog up on the Northshore and Mississippi. Lee will have a look at that coming up in just a moment, but this is what I'm going to be watching.
Storms to the north of McComb, storms out near Houston and Beaumont, and big storms out in the Gulf. This is a sign of a disturbance that's going to be rolling our direction and eventually we will start to see more storms fire up across our area. So, here's Precision Cast and the timeline of these showers.
This morning, there may be a little random shower popping up south of the lake, but nothing major through the morning hours. We continue that up until around lunchtime. I think we're still going to be mostly dry at lunchtime. But here we are. After 1:00 and 2:00, storms start to develop. Notice, they'll start out isolated and then become more widespread into the afternoon and evening. Heading home from work, you may be dodging heavy rain. You may be dodging some flooded streets as well.
That'll continue into the evening hours.
You're home making dinner, watching the evening news, it may still be coming down. You're getting ready for bed, it may still be coming down, too. So, this is going to be an afternoon and evening event and you can see there points this evening, it could be rather widespread.
So, the main thing is heavy rain. Now, like we saw this past weekend, Saturday and Friday, flooding happened. Some spots picked up over 5 to 8 inches of rain, but it was isolated. So, today that'll likely be the case again. And keep in mind, the soil is now saturated.
We've got a lot of rain over the past couple of days, so drain off, uh we're likely going to see a a better opportunity for street flooding. Our rivers are swollen as well, so we'll be watching that. The flood risk is not off the charts, but it is definitely there just like it was this past Saturday and Friday. Isolated street flooding is definitely possible. The severe weather threat is on the very low side. This is going to be primarily for gusty winds.
The tornado and hail threat don't look to be a bigger issue today. It's just maybe a strong wind gust in a few of those thunderstorms. After this, we're going to be mostly dry the rest of the week, so we'll have all week long to dry things out. If you did reschedule anything for this upcoming weekend, it does look like it will be dry. A heads-up on those rivers, the only river I'm still following that it following that is still swollen and actually climbing a bit more is the Tangipahoa near Robert. We're going to keep an eye on that. With additional rain, these river levels may rise again. The Bogue Falaya near Covington has been dropping dramatically this morning. That's good.
The Tchefuncte has been dropping. The Bogue Chitto is still running a little higher as well, and then the Pearl River, it's a long-term forecast.
It'll continue to run elevated for a while. So, that's it. Our 7-day forecast weather impact alert for you Monday, that stormy weather rolling in this afternoon and evening. Tomorrow, just a couple of showers, and then we'll be warm the rest of the week. Those mid-80s will settle in, almost a copy-paste forecast. Wednesday all the way into the upcoming weekend. There'll be a couple days where it's not as muggy during the middle of the week, but by this weekend, it's definitely going to feel like it should in May. Our marine forecast, Monday forecast calls for storms, but tomorrow and Wednesday should be calmer, and we're not expecting any significant winds through the middle of the week.
Your high tides are going to be during the afternoon, and those low tides are happening through the rest of the morning.
