The legend of Wilgefortis, a bearded female saint who supposedly prayed to escape an unwanted marriage and was crucified, was invented in medieval Europe when pilgrims misinterpreted the 8th-century Volto Santo crucifix in Lucca, Italy, which depicted Christ wearing a long robe (colobium) instead of a loincloth; Northern Europeans who had never seen such a robed crucifix perceived the figure as a bearded woman, leading to the creation of this saint who was removed from the Catholic calendar in 1969 but whose shrines continue to attract pilgrims.

The Bearded Female Saint Who Never Existed. Medieval Europe's Cult #shorts #history #medievalhistory本站添加:
Flanders, the 15th century.
A bearded woman, crowned and crucified.
They called her Wilgefortis.
In England, Uncumber.
In Germany, Kümmernis, the grieving one.
The legend went like this.
She was a Christian princess in Portugal.
Her pagan father betrothed her to a pagan king.
She had taken a vow of chastity, so she prayed. She prayed to be made repulsive enough to escape the marriage.
She woke with a full beard. Her father was so enraged, he had her crucified.
For 500 years, women came to her. Women in marriages they could not leave.
They left a peck of oats at her shrine to be uncumbered of their husbands.
Thomas More wrote about the practice in 1529.
But she never existed.
In the cathedral of Lucca, in Italy, there is a wooden crucifix.
The Volto Santo, the holy face.
It was carved in the 8th century.
In it, Christ [music] does not wear a loincloth. He wears a long robe.
That robe is a colobium, an old Eastern tradition.
In the 11th century, pilgrim copies began traveling north to people who had never seen a robed crucifix.
They saw a long-haired figure in a gown on a cross.
They saw a beard. And they invented a princess.
In 1969, the Catholic Church quietly removed her from the calendar.
But the chapels still stand.
Their candles are still lit.
The women still come.
