Life's fundamental invariance lies not in molecular composition but in the software agents running on molecular machines; cells are defined by the software operating on their molecular components, and organisms emerge from additional software protocols that coordinate multiple cells into unified systems.

Zooming In What Are We REALLY Made Of | Joscha Bach
Added:So, when you zoom really far in into the substrate that we are running on, what you observe is all these cells. And when you go in deeper, there are also no cells, they're just molecular machines that are happen to be organized into modules that we can treat as separate entities as these cells. And what actually makes a cell a cell is not the set of molecules, but it's the software that is running on them.
So, the actual invariance of life is a particular kind of software agent that is running on them.
And there are software agents on different levels, right? So, you could say say that what makes the cell distinct is not the cell what makes a cell a cell and alive is the software that is running on all these molecules.
And if some of these molecules go amiss and need to be replaced, right, then the software is going to do its best to identify some of those molecules and put them to the task. So, the actual invariance here is is the software running on the cell. And there is another layer of software, another protocol, if you will, that is running across many cells that ties them together into a single organism.
