[00:00:16]Welcome to day 81 of Satic Yogi.

[00:00:22]Each year on March 14 begins my 100 days journey in returning to the essence of yoga towards the celebration of international day of yoga on June 21st.

[00:00:37]This year I chose to revisit Mahari Patanjali's yog sutra and share my daily practices inspired by it.

[00:00:48]Today it is the 81st day which also means we only have just about 19 days to go to celebrate international day of yoga and also the summer solstice.

[00:01:11]Yog sutra 230 or the 30th yog sutra from the second chapter sadhapad a hensa satya aa brahachara aparha yama nonviolence truthfulness ness, non-stealing, moderation and nonattachment or possessiveness. Nonpossessiveness are the yum.

[00:01:57]Yum are the restraints.

[00:02:04]Yesterday in day 80 we learned the eight limbs of yoga. Ashtang yog.

[00:02:12]Today we begin the first limb. Yum.

[00:02:20]Yum is the foundation of yoga.

[00:02:24]Without it the mind cannot become satic, steady or clear.

[00:02:35]Let us break yog sutra 230 word by word to understand its meaning a little better.

[00:02:46]A hensa that's the first yum.

[00:02:51]A hensa nonviolence satya truthfulness aa nonstealing brahachara right use of energy or moderation aparraha nonpossessiveness Yamaha restraints or the ethical foundations.

[00:06:24]It's not a performance or any ritual. It is a simple non-religious way global way of living with clarity. It is as simple as that compiled by Maharashi Patanjali the yogra sometime back in the 250 BCE it is that old it's from it's an ancient um it is a gift from ancient India to the world so this is so beautiful and today we are on the 81st First day of my 100 days journey in returning to the essence of yoga and today we are our practices is inspired by yog sutra 2.30 which is also called the 30th yog sutra from the second chapter sadhaped.

[00:07:33]Let us once again recite what the ephorism is about. Ainsa Brahma nonviolence, truthfulness, non-stealing, moderation, non possessiveness are the yama restraint. the ethical foundation of yoga.

[00:08:09]So let us break it word by word.

[00:08:13]A hensa a hinsa nonviolence.

[00:08:19]Hinsa is violence. A is the prefix. So it becomes a hinsa.

[00:08:26]Nonviolence.

[00:08:29]Satya truthfulness.

[00:08:33]Aa non-stealing.

[00:08:37]Brahachara moderation or the right use of energy.

[00:08:43]Apari griha. Apari griha is nonpossessiveness.

[00:08:51]Yamaha the restraints ethical foundations. The five ethical foundations.

[00:09:01]Ainsa satya brahachara apar nonviolence truthfulness non-stealing right use of energy or moderation and non possessiveness.

[00:09:29]These five are the yum the universal principle that purify conduct our conduct and prepare the mind for clarity.

[00:09:42]So these five yum or restraints help the mind to towards clarity by purifying the mind.

[00:09:57]So yum is not about morality.

[00:10:05]Yum is about mental purification. The afflictions of the mind, the vitis, the purification of the mind, the disturbances, the fluctuations.

[00:10:22]Each yum, each ethical foundation, each restraint removes a specific a specific impurity.

[00:10:35]For example, a hinsa. The first yum. A hensa. A hensa removes aggression, harshness and inner turbulence.

[00:10:50]What is a hensa? A hensa is nonviolence.

[00:10:57]Second comes satya.

[00:11:00]Satya is truthfulness.

[00:11:05]Truthfulness removes distortion, selfdeception and confusion.

[00:11:16]Satya truthfulness.

[00:11:19]Third is a nonstealing removes craving, comparisons and insecurities.

[00:11:35]Non-stealing, honesty, aa.

[00:11:43]The fourth one, brahma.

[00:11:47]Brahma charara, which is right use of energy, removes distraction and restlessness.

[00:12:04]moderation.

[00:12:06]A parigraha nonpossessiveness removes fear, hoarding and attachment.

[00:12:19]Together they create cleaner inner field where clarity can arise.

[00:12:31]So now let's try a little more to understand better by this beautiful story from our life.

[00:12:40]What is it?

[00:12:43]Imagine planting a seed in a garden.

[00:12:50]Imagine planting a seed in a garden.

[00:13:00]If the soil is full of stones, full of weeds, full of debris, the seed cannot grow.

[00:13:15]So you must first remove the stones, clear the weeds, prepare the soil.

[00:13:25]Right? So the seed cannot grow.

[00:13:29]Imagine planting a seed in a garden.

[00:13:34]If the soil is full of stones, debris or weeds, the seed cannot grow.

[00:13:46]So what do we have to do? You must first remove the stones, clear the weeds and prepare the soil.

[00:14:17]The stones, the weeds are the impurities removed by yum.

[00:14:28]And this is exactly what Mishi Patanjali is teaching that yum prepares the mind for yoga.

[00:14:43]That's why it's called the restraints or the ethical foundation.

[00:14:50]So, yum prepares the mind for yoga.

[00:14:57]Yoga does not begin on the mat or some branded clothing.

[00:15:05]Yoga begins in how you live.

[00:15:10]And that is why yum is the first limb of yoga restraints.

[00:15:18]And what are these?

[00:15:22]These are nonviolence truthfulness, non-stealing, moderation, and nonpossessiveness.

[00:15:41]When conduct becomes pure, the mind becomes light.

[00:15:51]So what are we practicing today?

[00:15:54]We would choose one yum, one restraint. It could be truthfulness or nonviolence or non-stealing or moderation or nonpossessiveness.

[00:16:13]Just one yum and we apply it to one situation today. Any situation we choose one yum and we apply it to one situation today. And then we practice on it with Om. The general repetition of Om.

[00:16:39]And Bhavna contemplating on purity of conduct.

[00:16:50]Purity of conduct.

[00:16:55]So let us begin with our stillness practice.

[00:17:01]Sit and settle.

[00:17:05]Every day we do this.

[00:17:07]So in the first stillness practice, sit and settle.

[00:17:12]We let the breath soften. Let the body become steady. That's the goal.

[00:17:20]So to do that, back and spine straight and you look at a point at the eye level.

[00:17:31]Roll your shoulder if you have to.

[00:17:35]Make sure you're not seated on your tailbone and you breathe in.

[00:17:50]Let's do it. Breathe in.

[00:17:56]Breathe out.

[00:18:02]Breathe in.

[00:18:09]Breathe out.

[00:18:16]Breathe in.

[00:18:21]Breathe out.

[00:18:26]And just stay like that and open your eyes.

[00:18:42]Now bring to your mind one interaction from today.

[00:18:48]A moment where you reacted, you withheld truth, you compared, you overextended, you held on.

[00:19:08]So any moment And then ask gently which yum was missing, which restraint was missing in that moment. A moment of you reacted maybe or you withheld truth, you compared, you overextended or you just held on, held on.

[00:19:45]So, which yum was missing in your one moment?

[00:19:53]And let the answer rise softly.

[00:20:07]And now place one hand gently over your navl.

[00:20:17]Take few short breaths.

[00:20:23]And now take a deep breath in with the exhalation.

[00:20:27]Om. Let's do it.

[00:20:31]Take a deep breath in.

[00:20:38]Oh.

[00:20:54]Take a deep breath in.

[00:21:19]Take a deep breath in.

[00:21:42]and open your eyes.

[00:21:46]And now last but not the least, bhavna practice of stillness. Bhavna and say to yourself, let my conduct be pure.

[00:22:04]Let my conduct be pure.

[00:22:11]And hold this feeling for few breaths.

[00:22:22]And that brings us to the end of our stillness practice.

[00:22:30]Now, like every day, day 81 has a challenge. And the challenge is that you choose one yum today and practice it sincerely in one real situation.

[00:22:47]That's your challenge.

[00:22:50]Day 81 teaches us that yoga begins with conduct.

[00:23:10]Purify the mind.

[00:23:13]Nonviolence, truthfulness, non-stealing, moderation, non-possessiveness.

[00:23:22]These purify the mind and prepare the path for deeper practice.

[00:23:33]Tomorrow we explore a hinsa nonviolence.

[00:23:40]The first and the most important yum a hensa nonviolence.

[00:23:52]Your steadiness is your real journey.

[00:23:57]We meet again tomorrow.
