The Siliguri Corridor, also known as 'Chicken's Neck,' is a narrow 170 km long, 20-22 km wide strip of land in North Bengal that connects mainland India to the eight northeastern states. This strategic corridor carries critical infrastructure including national highways, railways, fuel pipelines, and military routes, serving as India's sole land bridge to the Northeast. Its vulnerability has prompted India to establish military garrisons at Chopra, Kishanganj, and Dhubri, along with air defense systems at Hasimara, transforming it from a perceived weak point into a heavily defended strategic gateway.

What is ‘Chicken's Neck’ Corridor? Why is it Crucial For India's Security?Added:
The Siliguri Corridor, better known as the Chicken's Neck. A narrow strip of land in North Bengal, barely 20 to 22 km wide at its narrowest point, but is of significant importance for the eastern region and the nation's security.
>> [snorts] >> The Siliguri Corridor, or Chicken's Neck, cuts through northern West Bengal.
To the west lies Nepal, to the north Bhutan and Sikkim, to the south Bangladesh, and less than 130 km away China's Chumbi Valley. In length, it is approximately 170 km. Its narrowest width stands at 20 to 22 km, and the total area is estimated at nearly 12,200 sq km.
The area is equivalent to nearly 30 lakh acres.
The narrow corridor >> [music] >> connects mainland India to Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim, the northeastern states.
Nearly 50 million Indians in the northeast depend on this route for military supplies, fuel, rail movement, highways, food logistics, and communications.
Here are [music] the areas around the stretch: Siliguri, Phansidewa, Chopra, Islampur, Kishanganj, Hasimara, Jalpaiguri, New Jalpaiguri, Panitanki, and Chicken's Neck Zone.
The most sensitive part of the corridor lies around Phansidewa, Panitanki, >> [music] >> Chopra, and Kishanganj.
The corridor carries national highway networks, strategic railway lines, fuel pipelines, fiber optic infrastructure, and military movement routes.
Any disruption here could isolate the northeast from mainland India.
And that [music] is precisely why India has begun one of the largest military reinforcements in the eastern theater in years. The Indian Army has already moved to establish new military garrisons near Chopra in West [music] Bengal, Kishanganj in Bihar, and Dhubri [music] in Assam.
These bases are designed for rapid troop mobilization, [music] surveillance, logistics, and emergency reinforcement of the corridor.
As far as the [music] air power of India is concerned, Hasimara is the air base.
There's a Rafale squadron and S-400 coverage under the eastern air defense grid.
The Indian Air Force has also significantly strengthened the eastern air shield. The Hasimara Air Force Station already hosts Rafale fighter aircraft positioned to respond rapidly to any threat emerging from the Doklam sector or the Chumbi Valley.
Advanced air defense systems, including S-400 coverage and integrated surveillance networks, are now part of the eastern strategic grid. Military analysts say the focus is no longer just border defense, but ensuring >> [music] >> uninterrupted connectivity to the Northeast in any conflict scenario.
Long-term plans are [music] under discussion for hardened logistics corridors, additional rail infrastructure, underground strategic movement systems, and expanded troop deployment capability across North Bengal.
The Eastern Command is increasingly treating the Siliguri Corridor not as a weak point, but as a heavily [music] defended military gateway.
And amid this strategic churn, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has expedited the transfer of 120 acres [music] of land in the strategic Siliguri Corridor or Chicken's Neck directly to the [music] center and the Border Security Force or BSF.
The decision was approved during the first cabinet meeting of the new state government. This key handover breaks years of political gridlock. It provides [music] central agencies the necessary space to fast-track critical infrastructure such as multi-tracking the railways, building all-weather climate-resilient roads, and tightening border security in a region that acts >> [music] >> as India's sole land bridge to the Northeast.
The Siliguri Corridor might appear as a thin strip on the map of India, but this particular thin strip is nothing less than a strategic lifeline for the country.
Chicken's Neck is no longer being treated as vulnerable terrain, but it is being transformed into one of the nation's heavily defended strategic zones.
