Coyote packs exhibit complex social structures where the alpha female delivers pups (typically 4-7) in early April, and the alpha male assists in den defense while subordinate helpers from previous litters aid in pup care; the family relocates to a new den approximately one month after birth, with the mother transporting each pup individually to ensure their safety.

Coyote Den 2026, Bay Area Wildlife Corridor本站添加:
With apologies to Simon and Garfuncle, something tells me it's all happening at the den. I do believe it. I do believe it's true. And if you'll give me the next 10 minutes, you certainly will believe it, too.
A new view of the den this year.
This is mom on the 24th of March. She's heavily pregnant, but still hunting.
She's been the alpha female of the pack and has delivered pups for at least the last two years. She'll deliver again on or before the 5th of April.
There's a new alpha male this year, and we'll call him dad. The old alpha male, Chester, or the limping coyote, has not been seen since he disappeared about a year ago. Here's mom after delivery approaching the den.
Dad's already guarding it.
The den is under a fence under a concrete spillway or culvert. And that's one of the cameras that I'll use to show you the activity.
dad on the left and exiting the den, probably one of the juveniles from last year's litter who's helping out.
I'll call her uniform for her tail. And this is the second juvenile name of Waggy. The den must be quite spacious to accommodate all those who are staying there. Mom, dad, two helpers, and we can't forget the pups.
This is mom who obviously has delivered.
So, it's after the 5th of April.
I saw my first pup on April 25th. He was walking and his eyes were open, so he was at least 20 days old.
One gets out.
Mom gathers him back up and puts him back in the den.
But the chaos is only beginning.
What are you going to do?
Wow.
Huh?
Dad tries hard and his heart is clearly in it, but he has limited tools.
And then there's mom. And who doesn't love their mother?
My best guess is each and every one of the seven does.
Mom's looking out for trouble. And here she comes. Another transportation job.
A catch and quite the transfer to the helpers in the den.
Dad remains vigilant.
That's uniform emerging from the den.
And you're right, that's mom. Dads are special, but moms are even more special.
They'll follow her anywhere. here.
That's dad approaching the den.
And Waggy, the subordinate, seems really happy to see him.
That's Waggy again. This time, less Wag and a big squirrel to share with the pups.
uniform also contributes and a genuine tugof-war amongst the pups for that tasty morsel as their breast milk is being supplemented by meat.
The same den can be used year after year, but they're only used for pingp.
So by May 4th, mom's decided that it's time to move the pups.
Over the next two nights, she took them individually in her mouth and transported them about a half an hour away to a safe place.
I caught five of them on camera and probably just missed the other two.
By May 8th, a little more than a month after they had been delivered, the den was essentially abandoned.
Or was it Hallelujah.
Heat.
Heat.
