King Antiochus I of Commagene (ruler of a small kingdom between Rome and Parthia) built the Mount Nemrut sanctuary around 62 BC at 2,134 meters elevation, where he believed heaven and earth touched, featuring colossal 8-9 meter statues of Greek and Persian gods alongside his own statue to declare his divine equality; the sanctuary was discovered in 1881 during a road survey and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, though his burial chamber remains hidden beneath a 50-meter pyramid of loose rock and his body has never been found.
