Cemetery Bootleggers, and the "Dead Drop" Whisky Retrievals.

[00:00:01]Hey gang, something fun to talk about today. I you saw the Creffield episode yesterday if you saw it. I was talking about the zinc monuments and how they would hide bootleg liquor in those and doing some more research, it is I got some more details and one of the comments came from one of our viewers, Lisa, who lives I believe it's Lisa, I think you're in the Charleston, West Virginia area. Anyway, you were telling me that Charleston the Spring Hill Cemetery there, they have a monument that legend says they did hide bootlegger liquor in like like a cabinet. Check this out. Well, I'll just put it on my laptop here. So, yeah, I jumped to find a grave and Lisa again told me the name of the cemetery, so it's Spring Hill. So, we go to Spring Hill Cemetery and I looked up the name Thayer and we found Otis Thayer.

[00:01:03]So, there is his grave and then you can see here here is the monument. Well, this is the smaller monument in front, it looks like.

[00:01:14]And there you see the zinc just like we saw yesterday in the episode of Creffield at the cemetery, Friends Cemetery there.

[00:01:31]And I guess what they did is they had one of these panels here, maybe both.

[00:01:36]They had Well, you know, they have like those they have those bolts on the side that you can Let's go back and see in the other picture.

[00:01:46]I believe Well, I don't see it here, but if you look at the one at Creffield the one I showed I showed you where the little bolts are and you just unscrew those, right?

[00:01:58]So, if you you unscrew and then the panel at the corner, so let's see if there's another picture that we can find that's a little closer.

So, this one look at this one, they had like a bolt or a big screw at the top here and then you can see here at the bottom at the bottom there's there's two what they would do, you can just imagine they would have these you just bring your screwdriver and unscrew that and then all the liquors in there's plenty of room, you could probably have a whole bar in there.

[00:02:42]So, I you know, I AI'd it and I asked specifically did the you know, in the Thayer monument, did they and it says yes, local legend claims that bootleggers hid alcohol inside the Thayer monument at Spring Hill Cemetery in West Virginia during prohibition. Look at that, right?

[00:03:11]And I clicked on one of those and it says operated it was brothers O.T. Thayer and you can look these guys up on Find a Grave and hear all about them. They operated with others a steam ferry across the river.

[00:03:27]They also found and operated Southside Foundry and Machine Company. It says legend has it during prohibition smugglers hid liquor behind a removable panel on the zinc monument. So, yeah, if you look we look close at that at monument there. And what I This is what I found really funny. Look at it says dead drops. As you just you know, you look into this zinc monument thing.

[00:03:54]Dead drops, customers were reportedly told which specific tombstone held their order so they could retrieve it themselves and it would be called the dead drop. So, very interesting.
