Did you know that Saint Ubald, 1084 to 1160, was a noble-born Italian bishop renowned for his extraordinary gentleness, patience, and leadership? He is celebrated for saving his hometown, Gubbio, from military destruction and for his miraculous ability to make peace among warring factions. Born Ubaldo Baldassini in Gubbio, Italy, he was orphaned at a young age and raised by his uncle, the Bishop of Gubbio.
Educated in the church, Ubald gave away his inheritance and joined the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine, eventually rising to prior of his cathedral. He instituted reforms among the local clergy and turned down several offers to become Bishop of other dioceses, preferring a simple religious life.
