A polygon is a flat 2D shape with straight sides, and polygons are classified by the number of sides they have: triangles have 3 sides and 3 vertices, squares have 4 equal sides and 4 right angles, rectangles have 4 sides with opposite sides equal and 4 right angles, pentagons have 5 sides and 5 vertices, hexagons have 6 sides and 6 vertices and fit together perfectly without gaps, and octagons have 8 sides and 8 vertices.

The Great Polygon Party! 🎈 Meeting the 2D Shapes (Math for Kids)Added:
Hello, shape explorers, and welcome to the great polygon party. I'm so glad you could make it. Have you ever wondered what makes a shape a shape? Well, today we're going to meet some of the most famous shapes around, and they're all part of a big family called polygons.
A polygon is just a fancy word for a flat 2D shape with straight sides.
Let's head into the party and meet our first guest.
Look over by the snack table. It's the triangle. Can you say triangle? Great. A triangle is super easy to spot because it always has three straight sides and three pointy corners which we call vertices.
1 2 three sides. One 2 three vertices.
Triangles can look different. Some are tall and skinny. Others are short and wide. But as long as it has three sides, it's a triangle.
Think about a slice of pizza or a traffic yield sign. Those are triangles.
Now, who's that super popular shape in the middle of the dance floor? It's the square. Everyone knows the square. A square is special because it has four straight sides that are all the exact same length. Plus, it has four perfect corners called right angles. 1 2 3 four equal sides.
1 2 3 four right angles.
Look around you. Maybe you can see a square right now. A window pane, a cracker, or a tile on the floor could all be squares.
Oh, who's this coming over to say hi?
It's the square's cousin, the rectangle.
The rectangle also has four sides and four right angles, just like a square.
But here's the difference. With a rectangle, two sides are long and two sides are short. The opposite sides are always equal. So, you have two long sides that match and two short sides that match. Think about a door, a book, or your TV screen. Most of those are rectangles.
They're everywhere once you start looking.
Wait, the party is getting bigger. Let's welcome the pentagon. A pentagon is a polygon with five straight sides and five vertices.
1 2 3 4 5. The famous Pentagon building in the United States is shaped just like this. And if you look at a classic soccer ball, it's made up of black pentagons and white hexagons.
Speaking of which, here comes our next guest, the hexagon.
A hexagon is a super cool shape with six straight sides and six vertices.
1 2 3 4 5 6 hexagons are amazing because they fit together perfectly without any gaps. That's why bees make their honeycombs in a hexagon shape. It's the strongest and most efficient way to build.
You can also find hexagons in floor tiles and even on some nuts and bolts.
Our final guest for today is arriving now. It's the octagon. The octagon has you guessed. It tight straight sides and eight vertices.
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8. The most famous octagon in the world is probably the red stop sign. Every time you see one, you know it means stop. That shape tells drivers what to do. Wow, what a fantastic party.
