Burnishing is a metalworking technique used after firing to clean and polish silver pieces, creating a shiny, reflective surface that enhances the jewelry's appearance; this process is essential for achieving the desired sparkle in silver jewelry, especially for small intricate pieces like the Cheshire Cat's smile.

Work in progress: crafting the Cheshire Cat’s smile in silver.
Added:Good morning.
Okay. Yeah, I need to take out the pieces, the silver pieces. I'm making a jewelry for a treasure cat.
And yesterday I fired some and now I'm opening it to see. You know what I'm afraid of? I'm afraid of that um I put the higher temperature. Oh my god.
No. Look, they came out really nice.
It's really nice. I'm really happy with it. Okay. And look at these teeny tiny leaves. I mean, they're so small.
Oh my god. I'm going to show it to Shannon.
>> Hey Shannon, they came out really nice.
Oh, perfect.
>> Look at this teeny tiny leaves I made.
>> Yeah.
>> You see that? Like we wanted it on the teeth on the cat teeth.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay. Shannon needs the microphone.
>> Can you get mine?
>> Can you please get the mic?
>> Okay. So now I will uh usually you know I mean not usually always after the firing the metal must be burnished. Burnished it means like cleaned and make make it shiny.
And uh my pieces are tiny so I already lost one.
I need to what I'm doing I'm just like using duct tape and Jenna is working on Alice's dress.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Getting ready for the photo shoot.
>> Photo shoot. Oh, I forgot. I need to go to Blick. Blick.
>> Blick.
>> Blick.
>> Blick.
>> Blick.
>> Blick.
>> Blick.
>> Bl i c k. Blick.
>> Yeah. Blick. E. Blick or blick.
>> Blick.
>> Okay.
>> I think either word. [laughter] Okay. So, let's do like I want to show what I'm doing. Kind of like we'll put this little tape, double-sided tape. And then using teeny tiny box pen, I'll take a big flower so you can see better. And I place it on tape.
And then I will use either metal brush like this.
No, >> you need better.
>> Yeah, that's not a good tip.
I thought I lost it.
I always lose [laughter] stuff.
Huh? I always lose stuff.
>> Me, too.
Hope that's Yeah, that's supposed to be better.
>> The field head. I'm testing things on her like eyeballs and everything.
Yeah.
Look how shiny.
Oh my god. Shannon, you would love it. I don't know how, but this came out really nice.
>> Yeah, I guess the firing temperature was all right.
>> I know. Yeah. What did I do right this time?
What did I do?
Not right last time.
>> It was good last time, though.
>> It was like dark. It all came out kind of burned a little bit, but then we cleaned it.
>> Oh, no. Cuz you torched one of them.
>> Oh, okay.
I torched it. You're right. You're right.
So, it was just like a a char, right?
>> Mhm.
>> Yeah, it was just a char. I understand.
Okay, cool. Oh, look how shiny. Shannon, you would love it. Oh my gosh, I love it.
It's cute.
Yeah. Okay. So, I'm going to put all of them on a tape. Okay.
Um and then and then what what can I show you more?
All right. I I will uh say bye for now and then we'll I'll see you in five minutes after I will place them all.
Thanks.
So, I'm thinking I want to sculpture cat like Oh my gosh.
Oh my god.
Okay, I'll look at it later.
Oh, so beautiful. Oh, she's so I love how she came out. She's beautiful. Yay.
Yay.
Uh something I want to make for ch mask out of silver and like I'm a little bit confused how to do it. The silver is so expensive. Don't want to waste it like you know [clears throat] and that's why I'm like always holding myself back and I think I should just like try. I don't know. I will I'll try to make like At first I wanted to make it something like labu. No, at first I wanted to make it something like more scary like the big teeth, you know?
>> Mhm.
>> Like >> I don't know.
>> But then I was like >> it should be more like kind of labu kind of classic >> treasure cat smile.
>> Mhm.
And that's where you land it. And then it was a masquerade mask.
>> But yeah, but uh I want to try. I think silver looks so beautiful.
Okay, I'll try to do whatever I can now.
And then um we'll see.
Noise.
Noise.
Wait, Remember something like that but cleaner. there or is it boring?
They try to make it like [snorts] scary.
>> No, this doesn't look like cheese.
>> No, >> this got to look like cheese.
>> Yeah. Okay.
>> Open.
>> Yeah.
Smile.
this nervous smile. [laughter and gasps] It would be funny if you would have like a nervous smile.
Okay, I'll try again.
How it's going, Shannon? What you doing?
>> I'm rubbing off all the latex that we put on.
>> Oh, yeah. Why did you put the latex on?
Um because we were going to touch her up, but we're going to touch her up after the photo shoot.
>> Yeah. So, if we would touch her up and spray her with the filler, then all the gems that we put and it it was like it wasn't like it didn't take us like days to put this. It didn't even take us weeks. It took us months to embed all of the gems that we have. So, if we want to spray the body again with the sealant to correct the uh paint job, we were need we were going to have to put latex on each separate gem. So, when we seal it, we could take off the latex from gems and they would stay clear. But then we decided that um we will touch her up afterward >> and then so we wasted some time.
>> It happens. It's >> okay. Yeah, it's just you know our mant is actually just redo it and it happens all the time.
Sometimes you're trying to save it. And I in in the years of making dolls, I'm like I have I have a I have an experience. Just just redo it. Just don't try to fix it. Just redo it. And it's better because whenever you're trying to save it and fix it, the pieces are so small. You can you can like you can do it with people but with with dogs because everything is so small you won't be able to fix it.
I want to go to bleak today. So if you guys want to come you should come with me.
Okay. See >> are you going to blink? [laughter] >> I'm going at like 5:30. I'm going to leave invite to sing.
>> Very nice.
>> Very nice. [laughter] Okay. Bye.
>> So, um, my girl is getting ready.
They not ready yet. There's a lot of things to fix before their photo shoot, but like it's getting close. It's getting close. I can't believe it. This is exciting because this collection started like probably a year ago and finally it's getting there. We're getting there.
So the um the chaser cat smile I don't know. I think I think it's okay. They want to take a look. Come here.
I think it will be kind of like that.
I mean, we love it. I think it's fine.
Kind of like thickish.
Yeah.
I'm going to make a handle for it.
Yeah, I think it's so Shannon now is u burnishing the silver pieces to make them really really sparkly.
>> Yay.
Okay.
