Leonardo took the painting with him when he left Italy, carried it across the Alps, through France, [music] through the final chapter of his life, working on it continuously, adjusting it, unable to declare it finished. [music] He died with it in his possession. That painting was the Mona Lisa.
That morning, like every morning, Leonardo had picked up his notebook before he picked up his brush. He always did. And in that notebook, [music] among 13,000 pages of sketches, theories, and observations he was pursuing simultaneously, he had written something that would not be found for 400 years.
[music] A single line, tell me if anything was ever done. You know this feeling, not the painting, not the 16th century.
[music] The part where you sit down to do the thing that matters most.
And your brain goes somewhere else.

He is studying bird flight not as a naturalist but as an engineer.
He wants to build a machine that flies.
He [music] is certain it's possible. He is 24 years old. He is also already driving his patrons insane. [music] His first major independent commission, an altarpiece for a Florentine chapel, he abandons after 18 months. [music] No explanation offered. The commission goes to another painter. Leonardo has simply moved on to something that interests him more. [music] His patrons tell themselves, "He's young, he'll settle."
He never does.

Sforza commissions The Last Supper in 1495. [music] It takes 3 years. During those 3 years, witnesses recorded something that looked to anyone watching like madness. [music] Leonardo would arrive at the refectory at dawn, paint with absolute ferocity for hours, then stop mid-brush stroke.
And sit perfectly still staring at the wall he'd just been painting, [music] sometimes for the rest of the day. The prior of the monastery complained directly to the Duke, "This man spends more time looking than painting. This man is wasting time." The Duke wisely asked Leonardo to explain himself.
[music] Leonardo's answer was documented. It was real. And it was 500 years ahead of neuroscience. [music] The greatest genius is sometimes accomplish more when they work less.
Now, here is what the history books don't tell you. Among Leonardo's 13,000 pages of notebooks scattered across four continents, lost and rediscovered across four centuries, [music] researchers found a list. 169 things Leonardo wanted to understand. The mechanics of [music] a woodpecker's tongue, why the sky is blue, how the heart pumps blood, the mathematics of waves, the structural logic of mountains, the aerodynamics of a dragonfly. What Leonardo experienced every single day of his life modern neuroscience now has a name for. Your brain operates in two modes. The first is focused mode, linear, analytical, [music] completion-oriented, the mode that works when you're concentrating on a specific [music] task, following a logical sequence, driving toward a defined outcome.
This is the mode that finishes things.
The second is what researchers call diffuse mode, the wandering state, the shower thought state, the staring at the wall state, the state that looks from the outside like doing nothing, and is [music] from the inside the most cognitively expensive process your brain runs.
