In coalition-based parliamentary democracies, political leaders often face difficult trade-offs between maintaining governing coalitions and addressing public demands for policy changes, as demonstrated by Israel's Prime Minister Netanyahu, whose alliance with ultra-Orthodox religious parties—granted military service exemptions—became a liability during wartime when public pressure mounted to end these exemptions.

Netanyahu's coalition alliances with religious parties put reelection at riskAdded:
Israel has moved one step closer toward holding new elections. The parliament has approved a preliminary measure to dissolve itself. That means the clock is now ticking for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition. Now, Israel is required to hold elections in any case by late October, but with this vote, we can see that Netanyahu's coalition already is fraying apart. The key issue is the power of Israel's ultra-Orthodox religious parties. Netanyahu's long relied on these parties to shore up his government. His partners allowed him to govern while he provided them with generous budgets and exemptions for young men from military service. Most Jews in Israel are required to serve in the military, and these exemptions have become especially controversial after 2 and 1/2 years of constant wars. At a time when hundreds of soldiers have died and the army is stretched thin, large segments of the Israeli public want to see these exemptions end. Netanyahu now faces a difficult balancing act as the country heads toward elections. He's under heavy pressure to enlist religious men into the army, but if he does that, he risks losing the support of one of his most reliable partners. A vote to dissolve the parliament could take place within the next week or so. Elections are expected 3 months after that.
