In 1917, Marcel Duchamp challenged traditional art standards by submitting a urinal titled 'Fountain' to an exhibition, sparking a scandal that introduced the concept of 'readymade'—the idea that art is defined not by craftsmanship but by context, intention, and meaning—ultimately paving the way for modern art, conceptual art, and installations.

Of course Dada would be featured in controversial art. #art #arthistory #dadaism #duchamp #artsAdded:
Hi, I'm Violetta and this is controversial art. 1917, an artist submitted a urinal to an art exhibition. And that act caused a full-blown scandal. In all fairness, at the time, art had strict rules. A painting had to be painted, a sculpture had to be carved. Values like skill, technique, and tradition were still on the main plan.
Then comes a new movement called Dadaism, my personal favorite. And it is built on one idea that nothing makes sense. An artist named Marcel Duchamp takes a urinal, flips it on the side, signs it with R. Mutt, and submits it to an exhibition. He titles it Fountain, Duchamp. The piece gets rejected. People are furious. As if a urinal can be art, then what separates art from everything else? And that was the real shock to the art world. Duchamp wasn't just trying to create something beautiful. He was challenging the system itself. He introduced the idea of readymade. Art is not only about craftsmanship, but about context, intention, and meaning. And whether people liked it or not, it changed everything. Without this monument, modern art, conceptual art, and even installations wouldn't exist today.
