Here's a psychology hack to disarm negative thought loops. You're going to love this one. It's going to pop you off the merry-goround of negative thinking.
You ever notice how negative thoughts can feel unbelievably true even when a part of you knows they're ridiculous?
And the strange thing is you can know better logically and still feel totally emotionally hooked by the negative thought. That's because negative thoughts are not objective reality.
They're protective stories, protective narratives, because your brain is constantly filtering reality through past emotional experiences, especially experiences from childhood. So, if you grew up in a household that was unstable, full of criticism, emotionally unsafe, unpredictable, and even violent, then your nervous system learned to adapt and it created protective patterns designed to help you survive emotionally. So, maybe a part of you learned something like, "If I expect rejection, it won't hurt as much." or if I stay negative all the time, I'll be prepared. And over time, those emotional survival strategies, they become automatic negative thought loops. That's why negative thoughts are so repetitive, so fast, so familiar. It's because they're conditioned brainwiring, but they're not truth. And here's where most people get stuck. They think the goal is to think positive. But if a part of you is still carrying fear underneath, positive thinking can actually feel unsafe to your nervous system. because some protective part of you is thinking if we stop expecting pain we will get blindsided. That's why affirmations can bounce right off a lot of people. Their body doesn't believe them. So what's the fix? What's the remedy? Instead of fighting the negative thought loops, we get curious about the parts that are underneath the negative thought loops.
And this includes getting curious about where they live in your body. Are they in your head? Some people feel negative thoughts in their throat. Some people feel them in their stomach. These negative thought loops, these parts, they're physiological. And once you learn how to work with the protective pattern that's underneath the thoughts, the negative thoughts themselves, they start to lose their grip and they start to lose power.
