[00:00:00]Do you think Islam is compatible with the West?

[00:00:04]Well, some version of it is just you know, de facto way because most Muslims most of the time living in the West are living peacefully and just trying to to have good careers and happy families and I mean they're not it's it's a there are 2 billion Muslims uh plus now I think of the world over and most of them are not actively uh you know, practicing Jihad or actively supporting Jihadists.

[00:00:38]Um and I think it's probably right to say that most of them um might be bewildered by what I just said about their religion and and its theology. I mean I bet most of them don't even know much about >> if they've even read the Quran.

[00:00:53]>> right? I mean they don't they don't read the Quran, they certainly don't read uh you know, the the larger you know, commentary tradition or the the Hadith or the biography of Muhammad or um and they don't feel any compulsion to care what um uh you know, any um anyone who we would view as a as an extremist says they they they they must believe about their faith, right?

[00:01:25]They're just they're just kind of checked and they're they're they're probably secular to an impressive degree now. There's not a tradition of secularism much less liberalism within the Muslim community that is at all analogous to what we have in the West. It's like I mean you can find you can find Muslims who are who want nothing to do with with you know, Al-Qaeda or Jihad or you know, like who would just categorically say that that's not my religion, they don't they're just giving my religion a bad name.

[00:01:55]Um and yet they're much more conservative, you know, socially and religiously than than um, most Westerners would imagine and might even be um, you know, open-minded about things like honor killing.

[00:02:15]So, there could be could be real human right rights abuses in a conservative Muslim context that have nothing to do in any straightforward way with jihadism or the the kind of excesses I'm talking about. And yet they would still really surprise you know, most Westerners if they if they, you know, if if they knew that um, you know, open-mindedness about, you know, honor killing or, you know, female genital mutilation is is as widespread as it is in in the in the Muslim community. I >> It might It might have seemed like a bit of a random question here in America given that the Muslim population is 1%, but it's a very real question for Europe because of the increase of Uh, Muslims coming legally or illegally into the country and we have Islamist attacks all the time. This week we had two Jews stabbed in London.

[00:03:02]>> Yeah, yeah. We've had >> also just you have ordinary Muslim families who will send their daughters back to the home country to be to to to get clitoridectomy. I mean, it's like it's like Really? Yeah, yeah. FGM is is still a thing. Is FGM occurs in Britain and it's predominantly East African, Eritrean, Somali communities.

[00:03:22]>> Right. I didn't know they were sending them home to get >> Yeah, yeah. But I mean, something like I think it's like 98% of Egyptian girls get some version of of um, this. I mean, it's just not the we can talk to Ayaan Hirsi Ali on this topic, but she It's this is this is a It's a kind of and it's not that I mean, that practice in and of itself isn't doesn't even have very direct ties to to the doctrine of Islam. And that's more of I mean, it's it's mostly Muslims who do it, but it's not exclusively. I mean, this is more of an African thing and and I but it's um still, it's a backward practice that is it's very hard to condemn in right in in in um you know, polite uh circles, certainly less left of center because again, you have this master value of any any kind of cultural judgment here gets coded as racism. Again, this makes no sense.

[00:04:15]We're not talking about racism, we're talking about ideas.

[00:04:18]Um Islam is not a race, I think, you know, it's in 100 countries at least, and it's, you know, white guys like me convert to Islam all the time, right? It's like it's like like it's not it has nothing to do with race. And yet, not I would I would bet 98% of Democrats in America think that something I just said had racist implications.
