The "messy rock band" episode ... -- THIS WEEK IN VINYL: July 20th, 2026

[00:00:33]>> For reference, [snorts] we're talking about our friend Ibrahim Mustafa, uh, comic creator, and he's got a channel on YouTube where he talks about his toy customs, and he does a lot of AKAs, and I'm just wanted to poke at him real quick.

[00:00:44]>> Y'all talk about toys a little bit on your channel, too, right? Like, >> yeah, we got a show called Toys in 20 we're doing >> similar to this.

[00:00:51]>> Has that show ever been under 20 minutes?

[00:00:55]>> Yes.

[00:00:56]>> Yes. Yes, it has. Yes, it has. Okay, I will be honest with you. I don't know if I could do under 20 minutes. I've never recorded anything under 20 minutes in my life. I I be yapping, bro. [laughter] >> Hey, don't get me wrong. Sometimes we get the yapping, too. But that that's part of the fun. I mean, we get the yapping here, too, because like we're looking at new cool stuff.

[00:01:16]>> Uh yeah, that's this is very true. Uh and with that in mind, uh we got to yap about something that we missed out on last week because I I kid you not. And and I got I got messages about this, man. I got I got messages on your videos about this where people [laughter] >> What What happened, man?

[00:01:40]>> So, uh we record there's a little little peak behind the curtain. Okay. We record on Sundays.

[00:01:48]>> Yep. That gives me a day or so to like edit and polish the episode, get it out on the YouTube by Monday, right? We record last Sunday and Monday morning, Tiny Vinyl releases this stuff, all this stuff.

[00:02:12]>> The next day, dog, >> the next day.

[00:02:16]>> [laughter] >> Okay, hold up.

[00:02:19]>> Yeah.

[00:02:20]>> Is that a record player?

[00:02:22]>> Yeah. So, we're gonna we're gonna talk about it for a second. Let me let me just I'm going to walk you through it.

[00:02:26]Okay.

[00:02:27]>> Okay.

[00:02:28]>> So, Tiny Vinyl has this what they call they're calling the Tiny Vinyl collection. And it's a collection of accessories that are designed specifically for the 4-in Tiny Vinyl records to support the Tiny Vinyl collecting community. what you and and [clears throat] you're seeing basically the gist of it here. There's a there's a 4-in turntable >> that fits a few records for like a now playing and then it it literally is just it's got a 4-in platter. It's got uh and it's got a few other features that are like >> specifically helpful for the small format records, right?

[00:03:04]>> Mhm. But then we have a um uh p like it's like a frame that holds four of the tiny vinyl uh album sleeves so you can show off the tiny vinyl artwork.

[00:03:20]>> Uh and then there's a crate like a like just a little like shelving crate that allows you to hold the um uh the little records.

[00:03:33]And so and so so here's the so we're gonna start with the turntable real quick and I want to go this through this quickly because obviously we've got records to talk about today but >> yeah this is important >> but so here's so here's uh first of all 4in turntable right >> uh custom platter designed specifically for the 4-in tiny vial records this needle is turned just very very uh minimally in into just at a slightly different angle Because the closer you get to the center pin, the more it changes the angle of approach for the needle on the record.

[00:04:11]And what happens as you get closer like on a on a fulls size record, >> you start out at the edge of the record and you get proper stereo separation, >> but the closer because of physics, the closer that needle gets to the center pin, the more you start to get [snorts] uh uh I can't remember the exact term for it, but basically like the stereo starts to get a little bit out of phase >> because the needle is leaning more to one side of the track than the other as it gets closer to the center pin.

[00:04:41]And so that's why things like anti-kate are so important on like a professional turntable. Um, but most smaller turntables don't have anti-skate because that's just one of the features that gets left out for a budget turntable.

[00:04:55]And so what they've done is instead of including anti-kate to keep the price down, they just adjusted the angle of the headshell so that the needle can approach at the correct angle and you get proper stereo throughout the entire 4-in record.

[00:05:10]>> Okay, that's pretty dope. And >> they put that level of thought like like they put a lot of thought into this little turntable. Um it is, you know, it is a budget player. It's a it's a little you know plastic belt drive player. Um, but it's got a couple of other cool features. It has line out. It has um it has built-in stereo speakers, so you actually don't need anything else.

[00:05:33]>> Yeah, that's the part I was like staring at just now cuz I was like, "Oh, wow.

[00:05:36]They put speakers in this little thing."

[00:05:38]That's cool.

[00:05:39]>> So, it's got a couple stereo speakers down there. It's got And then it's got the custom platter. It's got a couple of custom controls up there. I think it also has Bluetooth if I recall correctly. Oh, that's true.

[00:05:49]>> Um, which they're not showing off here, but yeah, you can you can connect it to a Bluetooth speaker if you want to connect it to something a little nicer than what's built in [snorts] >> uh wirelessly, or like I said, it has a line out if you want to go line out to like a proper sound system.

[00:06:03]>> Um, and so this, and here's the thing, this thing's 50 bucks.

[00:06:10]This whole turntable rig is 50 bucks and it's the most expensive of the of the accessories that they've that they've released for offer. So, uh $50 for a little 4-in turntable with built-in speakers so you can play all your tiny vinyl >> builtin storage. Uh, and it's got and it's got some internal storage to keep some of your favorite like if you've got like a like a rotating now playing like you can't really see it very well down here, but I have like a like I've got a whole rack of records that's in my now playing right now. On top of all the crap I've got on my shelf, I also have I also have a crate of records on the floor right now. And then next to the crate is the rack that I'm currently playing.

[00:06:49]>> Um, the crate is like some stuff that I'm taking to a gig. I'm I'm trying to load and kind of get ready for a gig.

[00:06:54]But that's, you know, >> Yeah.

[00:06:57]>> crate.

[00:06:58]>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's that's the that's the crate that's got the handle on it that I take to the shows.

[00:07:02]Yeah. Anyway, so um here's the uh here's the custom storage. Speaking of crates, here's here's your little uh vinyl storage crate uh for Tiny Vinyl. It perfectly fits uh you know, I don't remember how many, but uh perfectly fits the 4-in tiny vinyl record sleeves. Um, and uh, and it's like I think it's carpeted, so it's like a little it's like a nice little black carpet, you know, just a simple little crate. Uh, and that's like 20 bucks, I think. Um, >> I wonder how stackable they are, too, or like how it work with multiples. Okay.

[00:07:34]>> Oh, yeah. Very. In fact, most of the most of the um creators that they partnered with for the release this last week >> have uh they've they've got video footage of the turntable sitting on top of the crate.

[00:07:48]>> So, the way the way the way that a lot of people are doing it is they'll stack the In fact, here, let me let me show you. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Like right here, you can see um in this dude's video.

[00:08:01]>> Wow.

[00:08:03]>> Yeah. Well, anyway.

[00:08:05]>> Yeah. No, I get I get it though.

[00:08:06]>> But anyway, so yeah, you can but you can see the in the Yeah. So, uh yeah. So, uh the last one I wanted to show off real quick just very very briefly. This uh this is the tiny vinyl frame. And this I think is so either the crate or the frame. One is 15 and one is 20. And I can't remember which is which, >> but they're not expensive. They're they're both under 20 bucks is the point. And uh this frame comes with uh sleeves like like uh uh uh polyropylene sleeves that you can slip your your records into to keep them protected and then you could put them in the in the uh uh in the frame and the frame [snorts] is behind a piece of what I assume is like acrylic or glass.

[00:08:51]>> Uh and it's like a picture frame. It just like sits and shows off your artwork for your little tiny >> B. I would Man, I would have to get like three [laughter] of those at least.

[00:09:01]just cuz like I could I would never be able to decide on just four to display.

[00:09:05]I' I'd have to get like at least Yeah.

[00:09:07]>> Well, and here's the problem that I have and this this kind of gets into like >> like the only criticism I have cuz I actually really like this as a lineup of of accessories. I think this is fantastic. The only criticism I have is that they didn't release the sleeves by themselves yet that I know of. And I messaged them and I asked them about it and they have not gotten back to me. So, okay.

[00:09:28]>> I I hope maybe they're planning to release the sleeves later as like a >> sleeves would be the first thing I would release.

[00:09:34]>> I'm saying, dude, like like that should have been the first thing is just release sleeves that that fit the 4-in records.

[00:09:40]>> Yeah. Like just a pack of sleeves. Yeah.

[00:09:41]>> Yeah. Give me a pack of sleeves. That's that's the one thing that I want that I'm not seeing. You can get sleeves with the frame, but they're designed to be used with the frame.

[00:09:50]>> Um and so anyway, so that's that's that's what Tiny Vinyl has been up to.

[00:09:56]Um, they're currently only available at Target. I'm hoping that they'll make them available elsewhere. Um, but >> I hope so, too.

[00:10:04]>> But I I will also say they are sold the hell out. Like >> Oh, I'm not surprised.

[00:10:09]>> So sold out. Um, uh, yeah. So, I don't know what Instagram is doing, man. Instagram.

[00:10:15]>> I'm not I'm not surprised, but >> Instagram's on some stuff. Anyway, so that's that's what's going on. I got messages. I'll check those later. Uh, [laughter] let's move on. Uh, so we're going to start we're start this week with uh CIA the uh uh 10th anniversary of this is acting.

[00:10:32]>> Um, I like it >> that picture.

[00:10:34]>> Yeah, [laughter] >> I love it.

[00:10:37]>> Uh, yeah. Sea just being silly. I love it. Um, but this is like this is her like big huge massive like banger album.

[00:10:49]Uh, it's got Cheap Thrills. It's got the greatest. It's got Unstoppable.

[00:10:53]Um I mean, >> oh boy, now Unstoppable is going to be in my head for the rest of the day.

[00:10:58]>> Uh there's actually there's the rehab remix is on here, too.

[00:11:02]>> Because it's a two disc, the the I see a lot of releases do this where they'll release an album and instead of sacrificing or cutting down on tracks because they can only fit so many on a disc, >> they'll release it as a two disc and then the the side D the back side of the second disc >> Oh.

[00:11:18]>> will have remixes and stuff on it. You showed me my first one of those in our last episode. I didn't know that was a thing.

[00:11:24]>> Oh.

[00:11:24]>> Uh yeah. I didn't know that was a thing until I I forget which album it was in in the episode prior to this one, but I got to see that or something. I thought it was a like a turntable mat, but I was like, "No, that's the record with a great design on the other side." It was >> Oh, yeah. No, some some records will do they'll do a D side where they it's like artwork like etched >> or whatever. And actually, um uh some of the tenacious D singles will have done that. Um, I don't have my 7-in crate available like right this second, but like Tenacious [snorts] D did some 7-in singles that were to support Doctors Without Borders during the pandemic.

[00:11:59]>> Uh, they released one every year. And, uh, the the B side of those 7in singles all have this like fantastic etched artwork on them.

[00:12:08]>> Um, it's Yeah, really fantastic. And and actually uh >> they did that same thing with the School of Rock soundtrack. If you if you buy the School of Rock soundtrack, the Dside is like this etched School of Rock. It's the um it's the School of Rock uh emblem.

[00:12:24]>> The shield with the four corners and the and the kind of fancy >> uh whatever they what do they call that?

[00:12:31]Crest.

[00:12:31]>> Emblem crest. Yeah.

[00:12:33]>> Yeah. Yeah. The school the school of rock crest is etched into the D side of the school of rock soundtrack. Um but no, this has remixes. This isn't >> remix. Yeah. No, I was saying but like like I'm sorry. I meant like the concept of doing something different with that Dside. Oh yeah, cuz it's either cuz that's the that's the weird thing is like with CDs you can only fit so many songs also but between records and CDs when they made that transition it's like you can you can go with you know three sides of a record >> or you can cut down and do a single record to save money on the release and then that way it costs less but then you get less music and so instead of sacrificing the music they just do a Dside where they you know they just put some extra stuff on there and that's going to come up later in the show but We want to keep moving on. So this this is the see is this is acting 10th anniversary. Uh it's 45.

[00:13:25]Um and it's this black and white split which I know I I know you're all about that. Like >> yeah absolutely >> bro that black and white split is crazy.

[00:13:37]>> It's nice.

[00:13:38]>> Uh anyway so that's that's the first one I want to talk about today. Okay, now this next one, this next one we need to like talk about properly cuz this is getting into some interesting territory.

[00:13:49]>> Okay, >> this is >> this is Foreigner. The album is called In the Eye of the Storm. It was recorded live in 2025.

[00:14:01]>> By Foreigner >> by the current iteration of Foreigner.

[00:14:06]>> Oh. So the so the original band, a lot of them are old. One or two of them have passed away. Uh some of them are sick and unable to perform these days.

[00:14:19]>> Um what I will say is the album itself is not out yet, but it's it's to it's to >> uh it's being released as the live soundtrack for a film that will be celebrating foreigner's 50th anniversary.

[00:14:33]Uh the current my understanding >> is that the current lineup of Foreigner is all hand selected by I want to say their guitar player.

[00:14:46]Uh and this is I'm not a big I'm not a big AI guy, but in this case it's kind of convenient to have this breakdown.

[00:14:52]Uh, so I I Googled Foreigner original lineup versus now and it says, "Today the touring band features an entirely new roster handpicked by Mick Jones, the original league guitar player and keyboardist for Foreigner."

[00:15:07]>> Okay.

[00:15:08]>> Um, and uh, so here's the original lineup. Mick Jones, Lou Graham was the vocalist.

[00:15:13]>> Uh, you had Dennis Elliot, Al Greenwood, Ian McDonald, and Ed Gagliardi on bass.

[00:15:20]>> Here's the modern touring lineup. You have uh Louis Baldinonado who took over lead singing duties for the band's final tour transitioning from his role as a rhythm guitarist. You also have Jeff Pilson who joined in ' 04, Michael Bluestein who joined in '08, Bruce Watson who joined in 2011, Chris Fraser who joined in 2012, John Roth who joined most recently in 2025. Now, there was a speech at the end of uh Wanda Vision where Vision is talking to like a rebuilt form of himself and he's talking about this ship >> that uh had to be repaired over and over and eventually every board on the ship was replaced. And the and the philosophical question behind that is is it still then the same ship?

[00:16:13]And >> yes, I've heard this in different different ways. Yeah.

[00:16:18]>> Yeah. So, the question then remains, >> is it >> I know where you're going with this.

[00:16:24]>> You know what I'm saying? [laughter] Like, is it the same band? It's the ship of thesis. That's Sorry, that's I just I had to look that up real quick cuz that was going to drive me nuts. So the the the parable of the ship of Thesius is is a philosophical thought experiment where you explore whether or not it's the same ship if you replace every board on that ship. Ooh, I feel like this is the kind of question we need to leave to the audience as well because I would love to know what they think >> and aspects especially well like because of what you've just laid out here with foreigner like >> yeah is it still foreigner if every member has been replaced up to and including >> I mean even if they're trying to capture the you know like not I don't think foreigner has a sound you know >> well Mick Jones uh handpicking all of the current members >> that's a good move >> that's I I mean, that's not nothing, man. If if if the OG foreigner like what was that?

[00:17:23]>> You're not hearing that?

[00:17:30]>> Sound like either you got an ice cream man outside or or like a phone alarm going off.

[00:18:10]So that's kind of the the question that I have for the folks and this is kind of what I want to bring to you about this new foreigner record because here's the here's the thing. The ship of thesis experiment aside uh a it's 25 bucks so it's a it's a pretty good price.

[00:18:27]>> Wow. It is Foreigner's music being performed by the current iteration of Foreigner >> in deference to the original band. And um one thing I want to call out which uh uh doesn't it doesn't uh there's nowhere there's nowhere that mentions it here, but um if you if you go and look it up on Spotify, you can see there's like a Spotify player here. Uh, if you go and look it up on Spotify, there's only a couple of tracks available. You can see how that just says track five, track six.

[00:19:03]>> See how they're all grayed out yet >> cuz it's not available until the 23rd, which is this Friday. Right.

[00:19:08]>> Right.

[00:19:09]>> And so I listened to the two tracks available and feels like the first time, you know, it doesn't sound bad. It's like it's definitely the song and it's definitely live. So, like, you know, definitely like don't go into it thinking you're going to get studio quality. Like, it's it's live quality, right? But he brings out the OG singer.

[00:19:31]>> Oh, >> yeah. Like, he straight up brings out Lou Graham and he makes a big deal about like introducing Lou Graham and the voice of a generation and you know more like how like the entire world has heard this man's voice. Please welcome Lou Graham. And then Lou Graham takes like a verse or two on feels like the first time >> smart.

[00:19:52]>> So he doesn't do the whole thing, but like but he's there and he's he's doing it and he's with them >> at Ellis Island, bro. Like that's the other thing. Part of this album was recorded at Ellis Island.

[00:20:04]>> Uh they said the sixth and the seventh.

[00:20:06]So uh I think the sixth they did Ellis Island and on the seventh they did the rooftop of Dumbo House overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge.

[00:20:14]So between those two live performances is where they got the recordings that they compiled into this release. The other thing I want to call out here is that they have a cover of Bridge Over Troubled Water.

[00:20:28]>> I was look I was just sweeping >> which is the other >> one of my favorite songs. So >> which is the other release that's available currently before before the rest of the album. Right.

[00:20:39]>> [snorts] >> And uh and this, if you notice, the digital version has 10 tracks. They only fit eight on the record, >> which kind of, you know, hearkens back to what we were talking about, like sometimes, you know, they they they got to limit the number of tracks they can release physically >> because of limitations of the physical medium. Uh but they did include Bridge Over Troubled Water as the final track on the vinyl release. So, if you buy the vinyl, you will get Bridge Over Troubled Water and you can hear it right now because it's the other track that's available digitally for preview.

[00:21:12]>> I'll be interested to see later on what they cut.

[00:21:15]>> It's good. It's good. It's a good like it's honestly it's a good cover bridge there. Like, it's live again. It's live.

[00:21:22]So, like there's some, >> you know, there's some stuff about a live performance where you have to kind of give them a bit of grace. It's not a perfect studio polished, you know, recording, but it's also rock and roll music. It's not supposed to be polished.

[00:21:35]>> No.

[00:21:36]>> So, um, yeah. So, I would be I would be fascinated to hear what people have to say about >> this current iteration of Foreigner. You know, they're signed off by the OG band.

[00:21:46]They've they're featuring OG band members on some of their performances.

[00:21:50]Like, is this still a is this still a cover band or is this legit foreigner even though every member has been replaced?

[00:22:01]>> I don't know, man. They got a lot of cosigns. I'm just saying. I I don't know.

[00:22:05]>> That's what makes it interesting. I think >> that's Yeah, I mean, it's interesting.

[00:22:09]It's interesting. And you know, just I wanted to say real quick, like sometimes I really uh that's part of the reason why I like live recordings is cuz I want to hear the human aspect of the music, not the polished version. I want to hear the different inflections that they might put or cuz sometimes they change stuff live and sometimes it's for the better.

[00:22:28]>> Yeah.

[00:22:29]>> So, for sure. I I always loved having both access to both and not just not just with like rock music like this. Um, there was a uh there was a performance uh from Alive 2007, Daf Punk's Alive 2007 performance uh where they mashed >> harder, better, faster, stronger with um uh Around the World.

[00:22:59]>> Oh yeah.

[00:23:00]>> And it was just a banger mashup. I mean it is Da Punk, so of course it was a banger. And they they they mashed it up to themselves. So like mashing up their own songs, bro. Like >> nice.

[00:23:09]>> That remix is crazy.

[00:23:12]>> But then they release the studio version later.

[00:23:16]>> And so like the studio version is definitely the one that I play out when I'm like whenever I throw that track down at a >> Yeah, I like that one >> at an event or whatever.

[00:23:24]>> But having the live version on the live album like Yeah. You know, you know, it just so I like having both. Maybe that's just me being a greedy DJ, but but I I love having access to both. Uh I I don't know, man. I I'm I'm a little I Here's the thing. I don't I wouldn't even go so far as to say I'm on the fence. What I would about about Foreigner. What I would say is I'm curious. I'm curious what other people think, how other people feel about Foreigner replacing every member and then and then doing releases like this. [snorts] >> I was serious about like I want the audience to put How do you feel about this this in particular?

Fat Lips there, >> Into Deep is there, Summer's there, >> bro. Heart Attack, Pain for like just all >> Yeah, Pain for Pressure is dope.

[00:25:07]>> Uh, so yeah, I I I'm super stoked about this one. Honestly, there's not a lot to say about it here. It's 40 bucks for a two disc, which is exactly where it should be price-wise.

[00:25:19]>> And uh like like I'm I gotta I gotta get this. I gotta get this. Like I >> I'm going to be honest. I'm like I'm I'm already like having the conversation with my wife in my head like like listen, I love you, >> but I need this. You know, >> there's a band that I actually have seen in concert a couple times. I probably will go go out and buy this.

[00:25:40]>> Yeah, >> I do like I do like this album a lot.

[00:25:42]>> I like the gray. I like the I just I like everything about it, man. The negative the Yeah. Uh so yeah. So, uh All Killer, no filler, some 41 iron gray is what they're calling it.

[00:27:14]Repetitar Ballad of Jane is is is one of my favorites from them. Um, Showdown Ride on Sunset is another one that I liked. Uh, so this is like this is like glam rock.

[00:27:29]>> I'll be honest, I think [snorts] I'm only I'm only mostly familiar with number 11. [ __ ] Back.

[00:27:35]>> Um, yeah. Glamrock for the for the sake of Glamrock at the height of Glamrock in LA. Like they were they are very much known as a uh as an LA band.

[00:27:48]Um, and uh, Tracy Guns.

[00:27:52]What a lot of people don't know is that Tracy Guns uh, started LA Guns. Uh, but Tracy Guns is a guitar player and so Tracy needed a singer at one point and had uh, the singer had left the band and so he picked up this other singer named Axel Rose.

[00:28:11]>> And um, Axel Rose uh, for reasons uh, didn't stick around with the didn't stick around with the band.

[00:28:21]>> Uh LA Guns, but um a little while later, LA Guns was having trouble staying together and kind of keeping their [ __ ] together. So, uh Tracy Guns got together with Axel Rose and founded a little band called Guns and Roses.

[00:28:38]>> Guns and Roses >> went to record their first album. And due to, as I understand it, a violent disruption in the creative process, Tracy Guns left Guns and Roses, but Axel Rose still owned the name of like the band. And so he moved forward with Guns and Roses without guns.

[00:29:07][laughter] and he hired a new guitar player named Slash to replace Tracy Guns [laughter] and they recorded a little known album called Appetite for Destruction.

[00:29:18]So meanwhile, Tracy Guns goes back and reforms LA Guns and uh just look at that. Dude, I want to show you this this Wikipedia page. This whole first paragraph just talks about all the different people that were in LA Guns, different iterations >> before 1985.

[00:29:46]>> They had so much trouble between 83 and 85 keeping people in their band.

[00:29:51]>> Drugs, drugs, bro. It was all drugs and alcohol and rock and roll, man. He just uh Tracy Guns later formed a super group called Brides of Destruction with Nikki 6 of Mly Crew. Um and uh LA Guns continued on without Tracy Guns and bringing in guitarist Stacy Blades.

[00:30:10][laughter] However, following his decision to put Brides of Destruction on hiatus in '06, Guns formed the Tracy Guns Band. The group's lineup consisted of former LA Guns members Black and Alexander. Uh uh sorry. Um uh uh where's uh Nikki Alexander and Paul Black. Uh >> you had it right back in.

[00:30:34]>> So uh so I just I want to call out their names. So So Nikki Alexander and Paul Black, former LA Guns members formed uh the new Tracy Guns band with Tracy Guns as well as uh Jeremy Guns who I assume is a related. Um though the lineup would eventually change [laughter] with the [snorts] group eventually changing their name back to LA Guns. And then both groups continued to record and tour under the name LA Guns until 2012 when the Tracy Gunsled version of the group disbanded. Steve Riley died in 2023 and the Riley version of the group disbanded in 25.

[00:31:17]I'm not done. [laughter] >> If you go to Steve Riley's uh wiki page, uh it say it talks about Steve Riley, he's the drummer, right?

[00:31:29]>> Yeah.

[00:31:30]>> Uh and it talks about how in ' 06 there were two LA Guns lineups. Phil Lewis's LA Guns and Tracy Guns version of LA Guns. Riley was a member of Louiswis's lineup until it folded in 2016 when it merged with Tracy Guns version. So, at one point there was literally two bands called LA Guns that both had legitimate claims to the ownership of the band until they eventually merged.

[00:31:57]And then so they merged in 2016 and then Steve Riley creates his own version of LA Guns in 2019. This version released an album called Renegades through Golden Robot Records following lawsuits over the band name. The settlement was reached in April of 2021, allowing this band to continue as Riley's LA Guns.

[00:32:20]>> Were there any guns in this band?

[00:32:22][laughter] Just >> just so you've got Tracy's LA guns, you've got Riley's LA guns.

[00:32:29]>> Any guns? [laughter] >> Yeah. This is >> Bro, >> bro. Yeah.

[00:32:36]>> So, >> that's a lot of that's a lot of ego battles right there.

[00:32:39]>> So, now here's my question. I say all that to say this.

[00:32:44]>> Which LA Guns hit hits are on this [ __ ] record? [laughter] What if it's just a mashup of all of them? Just like just bits and pieces.

[00:32:56]just >> I I don't know if I have the energy to go digging through every single track to figure out which version of LA Guns recorded which uh which recording that's on this greatest hits.

[00:33:10]>> That's a really good question. Wow.

[00:33:12]>> But man, I told you it was messy.

[00:33:16]>> Holy snaps.

[00:33:17]>> And I will tell you, I've opened for LA Guns. We didn't talk.

[00:33:23]>> Yeah, that's a thing. I don't know.

[00:33:24][laughter] Uh What I will tell you is it was in 2010.

[00:33:30]Um I was I was uh it was my first residency at my first club uh that I started in '09 and I played through most of 2010. I was there for about a year and a half. Um, and uh uh in in like late '09 they started hosting bands and by early 2010 we actually got like we collaborated with the local radio station 1059 the Brew here in Portland and we actually got LA Guns to come play the club and I was the resident DJ so I was playing rock sets to open for these bands that were coming through and most of them were like local cover bands.

[00:34:03]>> Mhm. Uh, in fact, one of the original owners of um Red Castle Games, who's who's no longer there, uh, Red Castle Games, a well-known game store here in Portland, um, one of the original owners of Red Castle Games. I met him literally, he was on stage, the DJ booth was behind the stage, like at the back of the stage. So, he was like on stage like during tearown talking to me like in my DJ booth like and we were like talking over the over the counter of the DJ booth about his new game store that he was opening up in town.

[00:34:34]>> Yeah, that's funny.

[00:34:34]>> And he was like he was like a lead singer for a uh for one of these like 80s metal cover bands.

[00:34:40]>> That's that's great.

[00:34:42]>> And so uh I I don't think he's there anymore. I think he sold his ownership in that store and like moved on. They've moved. They've moved. I don't know what's what's going on with them now, but um it was wild to find out about this game store through that really weird really specific interaction at like 3:00 in the morning or 2:30 in the morning when we're trying to like shut down the club on a Saturday night, you know, after after this wild really really loud party. I also the thing about that conversation was like my ears were numb because I had been >> I had been playing really loud music for several hours at that point.

[00:35:15]>> Those were some of the best conversations though.

[00:35:18]can be. Yeah. Yeah. Uh, remind me to tell you about the Journey cover band, Stone in Love, uh, sometime. That's another story for another time. But, man, not only are those guys the best, but they [ __ ] invited me to breakfast and I didn't go with them. Uh, and I regret it to this day. Like, I I should have gone and hung out, dude. Those guys were [ __ ] awesome, and I I should have gone with them. Um, but anyway, that, like I said, another story for another time. LA Guns, right on Sunset.

[00:35:41]The best of LA Guns is coming out. It looks crazy. And if you're a metal head, especially if you like West Coast, like honestly, dude, honestly, if you just like drama, [snorts] [laughter] >> if you're just a if you just love like >> this needs a documentary, >> if if reality TV was a rock band in the 80s.

[00:36:04]>> Yeah.

[00:36:04]>> Like this is this is the most reality TV [ __ ] I've ever seen in my life. And I and I like honestly I just love reading about it. Um I will say Oh, you know what? I take it back. I do I do remember meeting Tracy Guns.

[00:36:16]>> Uh and it was just like a hey, nice to meet you kind of thing. Like it was very quick. Like we had no real interaction other than just like I shook his hand and then he ran off to the dressing room. Like it was that was it. Um >> but uh but yeah, I mean those guys killed it. I will say that like they you know they kind of brought the house down. It was a it was a wild show. So >> Well, I mean they probably were all good.

[00:36:36]>> They just had problems.

[00:36:38]>> Yeah. [laughter] Yeah. Yeah. It wasn't Yeah. On stage wasn't the problem. It was the offstage stuff that was Yeah.

So, the Cornell's, a mid1960s Pacific Northwest surf band, >> originally called the Tornadoes, appeared here as the Surf Riders with an album titled 10 Tons of Wet. So this is this is an old band that changed their name to a new band and then changed their name a third time to record as the Surf Riders back in the 60s. Okay, so this was originally released in the mid60s uh as one of the long line of interesting and obscure releases to come from the stable of the mysterious Los Angeles-based musician, producer, and entrepreneur known as Johnny Kitchen.

[00:46:30]>> [laughter] >> Uh, what's up in the kitchen?

[00:46:36]>> Originally released in 1968, this ultra rare album has been remastered and repressed on limited edition color vinyl for the discriminating surf music enthusiast.

[00:46:48]>> Oh my gosh.

[00:46:48]>> And it's not a surf record without a cover of Miserloo by Dick Dale.

[00:46:53]>> Oh, I've heard this.

[00:46:58]>> It's awful. [laughter] Holy crap. I was not expecting you to I mean I was going to say like I don't want any parts of this so far, but somebody out there might like this.

[00:47:12]>> Here's the thing. I I actually All right, all all [ __ ] aside, I actually do like surf rock. I like Dick Dale, man. I thought it was a really interesting niche >> area of music that doesn't get a lot of love these days from the 60s, >> you know, like the, you know, remember the beach movies of the 60s and all the the whole [ __ ] the vibe.

[00:47:32]>> So, um, and and honestly like Dick Dale, I to this day I will argue that Dick Dale is a wildly underrated guitar player.

[00:47:39]>> Like the dude the dude was a madman. The thing is um this is not Dick Dale. This is a This is like a local band from the Northwest that went down to LA to record with this guy Johnny Kitchen [snorts] and uh and released this. Listen, [clears throat] 1.2 stars.

[00:47:54]>> This sounds like a skit on somebody's show.

[00:47:58][laughter] Like this whole setup sounds like an episode of something else.

[00:48:02]>> Uh I don't know how this guy reviewed this back in 2014. It must it must be an old It must be an old listing that got re re like like restarted with this new release cuz the sound >> though.

[00:48:17]>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So So he's talking about uh sloppy sound performances uh uh steals of copyright of well-known hits by others. Just one example, Cinnamon Cinder with vocal as such which is not listed by proper title. much better originals are out there, including the Surf Riders, originally on Deli and reissued many times. So, >> wow, >> this is Yeah, I don't know, man. I So, here's the thing. And the reason why I say it's not great, >> I heard So, if you go listen to this album, The Surf Riders 10 Tons of Wet on Spotify, you will get the remastered version. And the remastered version still has like really bad like like the stereo separation is awful. the uh it's it's that it's that 60s thing where like the drums are in the left ear and then the guitar is in the right ear.

[00:49:06]>> Oh no.

[00:49:07]>> Where it's like Yeah. And then and then and then >> the left ear's quieter than the right ear.

[00:49:14]>> So like be prepared for a very terrible >> You got to really like this then.

[00:49:21]>> You [laughter] got to really be into this.

[00:49:23]>> But here, okay, so let's let's let's bring this full circle though. This is a terrible album with a terrible remaster of a terrible recording of, as I understand it, not a great band. So, by a not by like a weird like dude, some dude named Johnny Kitchen.

[00:49:43]And that that is the reason to own this album. Not cuz it's good, but because [laughter] No, no, hear me out. No, hear me out.

[00:49:52]Not because it's good, but because it's so obscure and so like unusual in its history that like I like I almost went from like I would never touch this to now I kind of want to own it just for the story.

[00:50:08]>> You see what I'm saying?

[00:50:09]>> Okay. Yeah.

[00:50:10]>> Like like here's the thing.

[00:50:12]>> I I want evidence that this happened.

[00:50:15]>> The LA Guns thing is wild, right? We talked about that and how the LA how LA Guns could not keep their [ __ ] together and at one point there was even two of them. Like it was it like the LA Guns story is >> the definition of Messi. This is a different kind of Messi. And this is the kind of Messi that makes me go I don't know who is repressing this in 2026 or where or who owns the rights to this or where the hell this came from. But it is fascinating.

[00:50:46]Historically, just fascinating that this band went and stole all this music in the 60s, got it pressed to a record by some guy named Johnny Kitchen in LA.

[00:50:55][laughter] We're getting a new press all these years later. Dude, what the hell?

I think I'm into this." Uh, >> I mean, they chose decent songs to cover and stuff, too. Although, I probably will skip uh Message of Love by Saliva.

[00:54:45]I'm good with never hearing Saliva again. [laughter] >> That's That's fair. Message of Love, the song is from originally by the Pretenders, but >> Yeah, I know. But I don't want to hear I don't want to hear the saliva version of it.
