In democratic elections, a fractured opposition is unlikely to defeat a sitting president who has established political networks and control over political appointees, as demonstrated by the 2023 Nigerian presidential election where opposition candidates collectively received nearly double the votes of the winner (14.58 million vs. 8.8 million), yet their fragmented support prevented any single candidate from achieving victory.

Disunited Opposition?, Thursday 28/05/2026Hinzugefügt:
99.3 Nigeria Info and I'm Hillary Nworuka. So, I'll be here, like I said, today and tomorrow.
All right, let's dive into something we something interesting. But, before we do that, um take note that we are not just on the radio, we are also online. We are streaming live on YouTube and on Facebook. On YouTube, we'll shortly be streaming live on YouTube and on Facebook. On YouTube, we are Nigeria Info FM and on Facebook, we are Nigeria Info 99.3.
So, you may want to log on to those platforms, YouTube and Facebook. We are streaming live and you're also here live on the radio 99.3 FM Hard Facts. I didn't do justice to those of you who sent messages on WhatsApp. Join the big threes. I'm going to be reading some of our messages. I have this one from Emperor Empress. It says, "Good evening.
It's absolutely unfortunate what the APC government and Tinubu done to this country. Yaloja is speaking now. She should tell her dad to allow democracy to work."
Are those supporting this terrible, unpatriotic, undemocratic Okay, I won't um read the other word. It's clear they are the ethnic blindfolded, selfish, and self-centered people and religious bigots. No sane person will ever support this some some some some some some something.
Okay, let's leave those words um And the next message is from Comrade Momo Nasiru Yusuf, um who sends from New Idemili. "Everything this same government accused the PDP government of, they've done three times worse. Can you imagine fragile little kids in the forest on Children's Day?
And they are more keen to return to power next year when the failures on the ground are all before us Nigerians."
And the next message is from Jeremiah, who sent this from Ikeja. "Good evening, Hillary. I am truly sorry for my fellow Nigerians who still believe Tinubu came to power to build Nigeria and not to destroy it. Just as we can see a whole country being destroyed under his watch. But himself and his party are after a second term and their first term in office has left a sour taste in the mouth of all. Both children and elderly as some children um have been under severe torture in the hand of terrorists.
It's unfortunate that people are still voting for Tinubu at their primary that saw him being the winner. Um okay, that's Jeremiah and I'll have this one from Adebayo from Igbobo.
Good afternoon, my brother. My real concern is about the children in the bush. If the government is serious about the security in this country, I expect the government not to declare holidays this season. Um that's from Adebayo from Orile-Igbobo.
And let me see. Okay, I'll take one more message before we dive into what we have for the next hour.
This one is um from David. Okay, no.
Okay, your name is not here, but let's see. Who are you calling? Okay, she's he's asking you a question, he or she.
Who are you calling a political maverick? Someone is exhibiting traits of a cheat and someone who lacks empathy and you're calling him a genius. I didn't call him a genius.
I just said that he's been a prolific politician, been a senator, been a two-term governor, and now the president. So, and that'll lead us into I'm glad you're bringing this up so because that's is going to lead us into the discussion we have until 5:00, which is about the opposition.
Can an opposition that's fractured defeat Bola Tinubu at the polls?
You may not like him, but he's been a senator, he's been the governor, and many people believe he is the godfather of Lagos politics. Do you understand that? From 1999 until now, that's been how many years?
More than 20 years.
And he's now in Abuja, in Aso Rock.
Now, note that um the first time it says 1999, the only time a sitting president has been defeated was in 2015.
And that's one of the reasons was because the opposition was united.
Bola Ahmed Tinubu Muhammadu Buhari Atiku Abubakar Rotimi Amaechi Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso Rochas Okorocha, we are all together in the APC.
They formed a coalition and they came up.
And after the primary, they all united behind the winner of the primary, Muhammadu Buhari.
And in 2015 Jonathan ceased to become the president of this country. Jonathan called Buhari and congratulated him. Now we are going into 2027.
And like I said, you may not like him, but he has been in government for a long time. Yeah, he wasn't particularly active in government in in he wasn't in office between 20 2007 to 2023, but he was largely influential in Lagos politics and he was even called the national leader of the APC when he did not hold a constitutionally recognized role in the party.
Now he's the president.
And every member of the opposition doesn't want him to continue [music] in 2027.
But the opposition is fractured.
There is Atiku in the ADC Peter Obi in the NDC Kwankwaso with Peter Obi in the NDC and we have Sowore in AAC.
Um we have other parties.
They initially came together to form the ADC.
But right now, the opposition is really fractured. Do you think the opposition should come together? Or can one of these people defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027?
Note that 2027 Note that pres- the president has more than 30 governors in the APC.
Right now, I'm not sure if those ones will work in his favor or against him.
Because in 2015, we saw some PDP governors work against the sitting president.
We saw a new PDP in 2015 2014 2015. Are you going to say that right now? So, that's will be the discussion the next hour about the opposition.
We're going to be discussing the opposition.
Should the opposition come together, members of the opposition come together, or do you prefer they test their strengths at the polls?
What do you think?
There is Atiku and there is Obi.
In 2023, we saw the margins of victory, right?
We saw Tinubu get about I I'll bring up the figures I think about eight or so million votes.
Atiku was in second place.
Obi was in third place. But, there wasn't much difference between the 6.something million votes Atiku got and the 6.something million that Obi got.
And Kwankwaso swept Kano state. He got the whole of Kano state. I mean I mean he won in Kano state more or less.
There was no competition for him.
In 2023, Obi largely controlled the southeast.
And defeated Tinubu in Lagos state, which is supposed to be Tinubu's home base.
Obi was victorious in Abuja.
But, right now, we are likely going to see an Obi Kwankwaso joint ticket.
Which means that if you are to rely on the 2023 results, the southeast most of the south south, where the leader of the NDC comes from, from a bias state governor, most of the south south, and Kano states would go to Obi if we are to rely on the 2023 data.
But what do you think? Do you think the opposition can defeat Tinubu as the Senate as it is. The lines are open. We have the main line, 02012770993.
That's 02012770993.
We have the female line, 02014657190.
That's 02014657190, and we are also on WhatsApp, 08095 97 25805. Lagos, let's talk.
Hello, what's your name and where are you calling from?
>> Chris is my name, calling from Ikoyi.
Hillary, with what you realize now that happened in 2023, did you listen to El-Rufai?
Did you watch the figure that El-Rufai brought out?
The results of election of 2023.
When people make excuses, "Oh, the man is a political strategist. The man is the Nobody can defeat him." Even the factual opposition, I don't think so.
Do this election in a a plain level field or fair whatever election, they will beat this man hands down. I'm telling you, Hillary, even with this past 3 years, they will beat him hands down. People keep on making excuses for him.
They had 30 governors.
How many votes will those 30 governors have?
Majority of Nigerians, those of us who don't belong to any political party, we have our voters card. We are more in number.
Who will go through what we are going through again for this past 3 years for another 4 years? Who?
In Nigeria as of today.
Cuz we keep on making excuses for this man. Nobody can defeat them. 2023, 21 people died for him to become president.
Do you call that one an election?
And somebody called the other day say everybody has been released. The ones in Kwara, I ask you Hillary, check. Have they guys have been released? Apart from the ones they kidnapped the other day.
We all are in for it. Thank you.
>> Thank you so much Chris for your time.
Thank you for calling in. And also noting this discussion, let's put INEC in somewhere in the discussion because we I know that after the 2023 elections, we all went to IRev to look at the results. We all believe that the results would be on IRev.
But we didn't see most of the results, especially for the presidential election, the presidential votes.
Some people went on to see different pictures being uploaded in the places where election results were supposed to be uploaded.

This is Hard Facts.
>> [music] [music] >> Hello Lagos, yes, it's Hard Facts and I'm Hilary Noruka. Let's run through some numbers here. In 2023, according to the results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission, the Okay, according to the released by the Independent National Electoral Commission, Bola Tinubu of the APC 8.8 million [music] votes, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP 6.9 million votes, Peter Obi of the Labour Party then Labour Party 6.1 million votes, and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of the NNPP 1.5 million votes.
So, according to the results, President Bola Tinubu got 36.61% of the votes cast. Atiku Abubakar got 29%.
Peter Obi got approximately 26% of the votes, and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso got 6.23% of the votes. Now, note that when you tally the votes of Atiku, Obi, and Kwankwaso, you will get a staggering 14 Well, staggering compared to what Bola Tinubu polled, 14.58 million votes.
Or let's just say 15 million votes, right? Which is almost double what Tinubu got.
Tinubu 8.8 [music] million votes.
The other three, 15 million votes. And the question we're asking today is can any of these people standing alone defeat the president? Now, when you call, take note. We It's not that we're asking, "Okay, can any of them if It's not going to be a two-horse race."
In 2027, the way it is right now, if things remain the way they are, it's not going to be Tinubu against Atiku. It's not going to be Tinubu against Obi. It's not going to be, say, Tinubu against Sowore or any other person. It's going to be President Bola Tinubu as the sitting president against Atiku as a candidate. Well, that is if INEC recognizes Atiku because right now we have two presidential candidates of the ADC. So, but let's just say Atiku on his own ADC Obi NDC likely it's going to be Obi and Kwankwaso NDC the Shure in AAC even though he didn't do very well in 2023. But that's the question we're asking right now.
Do you think the opposition is too disunited to wrest power from the sitting president?
Or would you rather we run the 2027 election with everyone being on his own?
I don't I don't know but I don't think any of the parties has produced a female presidential candidate.
If anyone has, when you call, hey, correct me.
Now, let's go to the phone lines.
Hello, what's your name and where are you calling from?
>> [laughter] >> Yeah, good afternoon, sir. My name is Kingsley calling you from Jaconde.
>> Yes, go ahead, Kingsley.
>> my my answer is yes.
The cry of Nigeria will vote him out.
The expensive things in Nigeria will vote him out. If our position no fit vote him out. Because I no see a grown-up man like me with a bag they chop.
Just for just 3 years.
So, the cries of Nigeria will vote him out. Thank you.
>> You're welcome. Oh, the cries of Nigerians The cries of Nigerians don't exactly vote. Nigerians really vote. You can cry at home and if you don't pick up your PVC and go to the polling units, you will have zero votes to your name.
Hello, what's your name and where are you calling from?
>> Hello, good afternoon again.
>> Yes, we can hear you. Go ahead.
>> Uh Madam Lucky from Badagry make you again.
I think your answer The answer to your question is no.
You see uh imagine a child Abubakar queuing behind Peter Obi with his own followers.
And you have all those numbers added together. You will see that the president will run 440. But as it is today, I think he's going to divide the vote of the north.
Peter Obi is going to divide the vote of the south.
The president as it is now, he has so much appointment that he has made. Now he wants return. That is why you see the governors, they will work. See, the one that man is talking and let the if election comes, we know that the majority of voters, they are they are the people who are not educated. If they are not even listening to you, they follow follow follow their political leaders who they follow. So, these followers are the people that do and those are the people that the ruling party usually exploit through their leaders, through the governors and the those in the community. So, I think at the beginning of failure for the opposition is what they have started now. And I think he made a comment.
Sorry before I go. He said he regret not creating a making a decree for a two-party state. That the one he did for land use, no government have been able to but if you have done it, if your godfather challenge you, say no do, you fight and then both of them they go to that most of them.
>> time out.
>> Thank you very much.
>> Yeah, you're welcome.
Hello, what's your name and where are you calling from?
Uh, while we wait, madam, Lucky says no, that a disunited opposition can't wrest power from a sitting president.
Hello, what's your name and where are you calling from?
Hello.
>> Yeah, good afternoon.
>> The line is not clear, so I had to um end the call.
Hello, what's your name and where are you calling from?
>> Hello, good afternoon.
>> Afternoon, you're calling the female line, I'll have to end the call. Call the male line.
Hello, what's your name and where are you calling from?
>> Jerry is my name, Larry.
Now, I think um the three of them just like you're reading those those same numbers out.
And that was the sign they supposed to defeat these two Nungua that they suffering all of us right now.
That the only prodigal out of the three of them is Peter Atiku and I've been consistent about it.
But my support is Wike then for Wike knew that this Atiku man is like that and he has repeated it again.
But I don't understand him. He plays it very well. What is happening in that party that is pinching them? They are two presidents right now. They should go and fight themselves out. At least Peter is not there.
Okowa is not there.
So he should fight with them and the other Atiku.
Now, having said that, all of us out here I keep on saying it.
80% of us have never voted. It's not about talking and it's not about crying like the other caller said.
All of us we need to come out.
>> When you say 80% who did the counting? Who who who who collected the >> Very good. If you go and check results, past elections results, you will see registered voters, you will see accredited voters, you will now see people that eventually vote. You will see that the registered voters is far way more than people that voted.
What does that indicate? It means that if you and if you put it if you put it to percentage, you will see that 80% of us are at our seat at home or busy talking story of one bad INEC chairman to another bad INEC chairman.
It's all of you to come out and choose a leader. Or all of some of us will be playing football at home.
All of us must be interested especially this this this this dispensation.
We have really suffered under this leadership. And if we keep on if we think it's just talking alone and and if we go of course we go and carry gun, they will arrest us. If we go and protest, they will arrest us. But you have your voters card. Nobody will arrest Nobody will arrest you. What you just need to do is sacrifice your time and and and and just come out and pick a leader that will run this country for us.
It cost you nothing.
>> Thank you so much for the contribution. Yeah, exactly. You need to pick up your PVCs and votes.
Vote the candidate of your choice in 2027.
Hello, what's your name and where are you calling from?
Hello, what's your name and where are you calling from?
>> Good afternoon, Hillary.
>> Yeah, afternoon.
>> Uh it's a man now speaking to you from a plane.
I support Madam Lucky 100%.
We are we are only playing we are joking. You know, to think that we have Where I don't let me make it a categorical statement. But it will be difficult to unseat President Tinubu, you know, at the moment. Because of how everybody, you know, has gone to their camp. Uh let's be pretending as if there are people who collect money, you know, to vote.
Let's be pretending You You You don't want Fantastic thing about the president is that even when he was in Lagos, every political appointee He tells them to go and deliver their ward. To go and deliver their local government. To go and deliver their constituency. And if you fail to deliver, there are consequences for it. So, everybody will be on their toes in terms of delivering their local government and so on.
So, uh for the opposition, uh it's not a good thing that Atiku is not stepping down. But I have always said that if we have two two brothers, one is senior, one is junior. And then there is argument of one stepping down for the other. If the senior is refuses to to submit, then the junior should back him up. That is what I'm saying to Obi. It's just like a set up. It's politics.
Just sacrifice this one time. 2031, you come You come Okay, will it be a good thing? Let's even assume that Obi wins.
And then he goes and spends one term, you know, in Aso Rock when some of us have been clamoring for Igbo presidency.
At the moment today, if an Igbo man becomes a president, and he's even ready to support I mean to spend three times in Aso Rock, which is 12 years. I'm ready even to support him. Good afternoon.
>> Afternoon. Thank you for your contribution. Woo. Okay, agreeing with um Madam Lucky looks like those who think a disunited opposition can defeat the president are in the majority at this point.
Hello, what's your name and where are you calling from?
>> Uh hello, my name is Alabi from Ijebu.
>> Yeah, go ahead. We can hear you. Once you call, just your name, where you're calling from, and straight to it.
>> I think partially I support Madam Lucky because as it is now, the oppositions are in disarray.
But let me tell you, the opposition, they must be foolish if at the end of the day they don't play the last joker. The last joker is this, that alignment is allowed, but coalition is no more feasible. But alignment is allowed. They they can all come together and say, "Okay, this is the one person we are aligning with." And going into election like that will make will break the ruling ruling party. Definitely, that one is sure. If they can unite together during campaign, they campaign for one person, they set their eyes on the ball for one person, in fact, Tinubu will be gone.
That's just it.
>> Thank you so much for your contribution.
Um note that we are on the radio 99.3 FM. We're also live on Facebook and on YouTube. Let me go to WhatsApp right now to read some of the messages I have.
This one is from Adebayo from Orile Igbono. Um I've already Okay, let me see. Good afternoon, my brother.
About the matter we are discussing, I am not an APC supporter or any opposition party, but if I want to be sincere or if we want to be sincere with ourselves, these opposition parties cannot unseat the APC with what we are seeing now. My prayer is that God will choose for us the people that will have the fear of God. It is well. I'm thank you Adebayo from Ibeju-Lekki.
Another message here is um Churchmind in Ikorodu.
In 2015, how many presidential candidates were on the ballots? Did Buhari not win? Out of all the seven or six candidates on the ballots, we know that there are always two or three strong candidates. So, that factor will not determine anything. And that's Churchmind from Ikorodu there.
And let me see. I have another message here.
If we have free and fair election or if you have a free and fair election, President Tinubu will be defeated.
Fractured opposition nonetheless. That's um the opinion of Ladi from Ikorodu. I have so many people um sending messages from Ikorodu. Let's see. I have another message here. Good evening, Hillary.
It's absolutely unfortunate what's Okay, um I think we We had this message before, so I will have to leave it and head over to the phone lines to take just one last call for this segment.
Hello. Make it under 1 minute. What's your name and where are you calling from?
Hello. What's your name and where are you Oh, hold on. Hello. Start all over again. What's your name and where are you Where are you calling from?
>> I said this is Joseph calling from Badagry Housing.
>> All right. Go ahead, Joseph.
>> city president no carry move. Nigeria, all of us come together. You can be in the ADC, NDC. And that particular day, everybody should come out and vote for Peter Obi. Thank you.
>> Thank you so much. You're you're you're already campaigning. You're not here to campaign for anyone at the moment. But anyway, um so, that's it, Lagos. We'll be going on a quick break and Hard Facts will continue right after the break.
>> 99.3 Nigeria Info. WE'LL BE RIGHT BACK.
