A new political party can achieve electoral victory by leveraging youth support and fan following, even without established organizational infrastructure, as demonstrated by TVK's 108-seat win in Tamil Nadu's 2026 assembly elections, which challenged the state's traditional Dravidian political binary and introduced a third force to the political landscape.

Vijay Thalapathy News | From 'Thalapathy' To CM: Vijay Takes Oath As Tamil Nadu Chief MinisterAjouté :
[music] >> TV K Chief C. Joseph Vijay took oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in a grand ceremony at the Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, May 10th.
>> [cheering] >> The ceremony was the culmination of months of hectic campaigning that saw the TV K leader and his party emerge victorious on 108 seats in the state.
Immediately after taking over as the Chief Minister, Vijay signed papers allowing 200 units of free electricity for domestic consumers, for setting up a special force for women's safety, and also for anti-drug trafficking units across the state.
In his speech, Vijay said that he would not deceive people with false promises and would usher in a new era of real, secular, social justice.
>> [screaming] [cheering] [cheering] >> I deliver 100% in the vision of another the Vijay mama order >> [cheering] >> I'm going to let it do another ticket.
>> My dear virtual warriors with fresh governance or new governance on the coupon.
>> [cheering] >> This is a new beginning.
>> [screaming] >> A new era of a real secular social justice starts now.
During the campaign, Vijay and his party were often dismissed as inexperienced, inaccessible, and not in touch with the ground reality.
But Vijay proved his detractors wrong to emerge victorious, disrupting a long-standing Dravidian binary to form the government.
>> [music] [cheering] >> On May 4th, 2026, when the state's electorate discarded decades of familiarity, it also ensured that Tamil Nadu politics is forever changed.
It's a very auspicious beginning for a party that's barely 25 months old, has no major organizational base, uh depended simply on uh fan fan strength and Gen Z and and younger voters.
So, so this is a a historic uh seismic moment in Tamil Nadu's history because the the the state's political trajectory has been a binary one.
Now you have a since since independence.
So, now you have a a a new entrant and and at the moment the binary has been challenged. So, there's a third player and the third player seems to have risen to the first place pushing the other two players who have been in play from 1967 and 1972 into the second and third places. So, uh people are wondering if if the era of era of the Dravidian movement is behind etc. I think it's too early to say all that.
I I think they could there is still room for a third force. They could be three forces that I think the the the fact that there are more options is is is actually a good choice for voters so that they could shop around and get the best deal.
The TVK campaign and its post-win narrative has centered on grassroots service and a conscious departure from the political culture associated with the Dravidian majors. While Vijay has shared his open veneration for Dravidian ideologues Periyar and Annadurai, the message from this win seems to be one of change.
In his meetings with the elected MLAs, Vijay emphasized that the victory was not a conquest, but a duty.
For many of the 108 newly elected MLAs, it is a reminder of their responsibilities.
>> [screaming] >> Yeah, yeah, the discussion was very good. It went well. He was just saying about what all these steps to be done for the people and good for the people.
So, how to take it in the further way for the future purpose. That's it.
I doubt it. You're not allowed to do me on that.
>> TVK's victory has also put the spotlight on the diversity of the elected representatives.
TVK's candidate selection focused on inclusive representation that challenged the status quo.
The party provided opportunities to a wide range of candidates, including seven from Dalit backgrounds, several Muslim representatives, and 23 women.
For the voters, this shift in representation projected TVK as a party attempting to widen access to power.
TVK being a young party, they give a lot of importance to youngsters, educated people.
Me being the advocates wing coordinator and me doing a lot of social activities from the past, not just uh after the party's inception, I've been doing a lot in the name of the Thalapathy Vijay for the past several years.
So, he has seen me potential and my efficiency to work for the people of the the constituency.
And then we took a couple of interviews and uh he gave me the ticket.
Candidates have also openly spoken of the intense personal battles they fought [music] to secure their wins highlighting their struggles to justify their plans for the future.
Basically he said that this is a huge responsibility which the people have given us. It's not that any post which we can unlike any post or authority it's a service mandate which the people have given us.
So we should always deliver to the people that lowest rate of the people their needs we should cater to them.
People want change. They were waiting for the particular moment and it happened. The Thalaivar has come and he launched the party. So everybody wanted the change and they shifted. What's the message to the people who have voted for you in large numbers?
So they gave the opportunity to us with a lot of hope.
Right? And they want the sun to be risen again with the right people and right candidate and right representative. So, I will be the right representative and I will be the voice of the people.
The TVK clogged 34.92% vote share in its debut polls. This is also the first time in Tamil Nadu that a party will assume power a little over 2 years after its founding in February 2024.
However, it also lays bare the inexperience that the party will have to overcome to govern well.
Vijay, as I said, it's it's it's a you know, he was the candidate in all the 234 constituencies.
Nobody knew his candidates.
Except in two constituencies, I'm told, no money changed hands.
The votes were virgin, untainted, unsullied first time in more than three decades because I surmise that at least a sixth of the votes are purchased by any party.
So, this is a great beginning. He can He can be a benign dictator.
I I think everybody The only thing that is the imponderable to me is how long will this honeymoon last? We don't want to do several mistakes we have been doing.
We We don't want to do conventional politics. We want to have a new, fresh, and energetic politics where we are free from any kind of corruption, any kind of uh uh nepotism. We want to serve the people in the right motive without expecting anything in return. We want to be go all out and help the people of Tamil Nadu.
>> [music] >> As the dust settles on its win and the TV K turns to governance, the real test begins.
The promise of clean politics and grassroots service will now have to translate into administrative delivery.
Expectations are high as the mandate is built on a promise of change and departure from a long-established governance model.
While the 2026 assembly polls may seem as a disruption of Dravidian dualism, it is more the beginning of a new political experiment, one that may be judged harshly not on its win, but on its governance.
