N.J. Gov. Mikie Sherrill at ICE facility Delaney Hall to join protestors

[00:00:00]New Jersey Governor Mikey Sherrill is spending her Memorial Day outside a detention center in Newark. She has joined protesters who claim people inside are being held in poor conditions. Christine Sloan joins us live from Newark with the latest.

[00:00:15]Cindy, the governor just left and it has been a chaotic scene here at Delaney Hall as you can see behind me protesters are in front. They've been here since Friday. Family members claim their loved ones being detained inside the immigration facility are facing terrible conditions. Now, New Jersey Governor Mikey Sherrill was here earlier talking to family members and hearing their stories. One of those people Gabriela Soto, she is pregnant and her husband has been detained inside the facility.

[00:00:43]We spoke to her on Friday and over the weekend she tells us she blocked the exit because she says agents were trying to take her husband out of the facility.

[00:00:51]She was able to tell her story to Mayor Ross J. Baraka as well. If you recall, he was taken into custody inside the gates of this facility a while back but those charges against him were dropped.

[00:01:01]Now, we spoke to Soto earlier and this is what she had to say.

[00:01:05]They retaliated on my husband from the protest that I started.

[00:01:09]So, what were they doing? Taking him away? Describe.

[00:01:12]They lied to him. They told him that he was getting released and then I bare witnessed him getting kidnapped, shoved and thrown in a van.

[00:01:19]So, what did you do? Did the van go away? No. I I knew that DHS was bluffing. I knew that they were lying.

[00:01:27]So, I told people I'm going to go inside. But I want people here.

[00:01:31]I want them to block any van that comes out. They listened to me. I had a whole community behind me that was listening to me. They saw a van and they blocked it. They pulled They made the van go back.

[00:01:44]So, now he's inside? We don't know where he is. I'll continue to work to go and bed at the same time. I think this really brings to light why the state has been fighting Roxbury so hard because this type of facility shows exactly why we should not have private mass detention facilities. I'm here you know because of the letters that the folks wrote inside of here. Inhumane conditions. We knew the conditions of being inhumane.

[00:02:09]We're still in court with these people right now and as we speak the judge is trying to make this go to mediation. We're still We're still in court with them for things that happened all the way a year or so ago. So I mean I knew that these people weren't trying to do anything right at all.

[00:02:26]I'm here to support your congresspeople to support the people here to support the the residents inside of this place who are being treated inhumanely like we would do anybody.

[00:02:38]Now an ICE spokesperson tells us that detainees are being treated very well inside this facility. There is a congressional delegation here including Congresswoman LaMonica McIver. If you recall she is facing charges for another incident here that have not been dropped against her. Again, ICE officials tell us that folks inside this immigration center are receiving comprehensive medical care, three meals a day, clothing, showers, and you know that's what we've been told but those congresspeople here are telling us that's not what they're hearing from the people they've talked to inside.
