He received the Alain Locke prize for portrait painting shortly before his death on the 10th of May, 1931. This is 1 Minute Museum, one powerful, positive piece of black history. On the 10th of May, 1931, artist Edwin Harleston passed away, but his paintings still speak. Harleston was a gifted portrait artist from Charleston, South Carolina. He painted black people with dignity, seriousness, beauty, and respect. At a time when black life was often ignored or misrepresented, Edwin Harleston used his brush to say, "Look closely.
