Wildfires burn thousands of acres across Northeast Florida, Southeast Georgia

[00:00:11]Had a classic congressman being there with the joke and you know, speaking of two tired, boy our firefighters are going to be getting there anytime now, right?

[00:00:19]>> Yeah, and you know, we talked about it last night that if there's something that is a blessing for this go-round, it's not like the fires of '98 when we were in the heat of summer where we had 90 plus degree days. So, temperatures really aren't that bad. They will start to get hotter as we approach the weekend, but there's still some time, especially now that they know that the wind is going to be swapping here, giving them a chance with maybe some of those fires going back into areas that have already been charred. That takes some of the fuel out of it, maybe giving them a chance to get some better containment on the thousands of acres that continue to burn. So, what we're going to see, and I'll just use this map again, we'll come back to it here, is the wind is switching tonight, overnight and into tomorrow. So, it'll still have a bit of a northwesterly component and then swap all the way back around, giving us a southwest that'll become southeast. So, this means that smoke that from the fires that County Road 18, by the way, some closures there at Bradford County, that smoke will be drifting northward. Baker County, parts of Duval, Nassau, and even the beaches could smell some as the wind continues to swap. And then late night or in the evening, as you see here from the flag, we'll see another change in the wind again, continuing it east at 9 mph. So, that will have that smoke shifting quite a bit for tomorrow. Temperatures even at the beaches have slipped down to 69° right now. We've got 63% humidity, it won't make it feel like 75. And out at the airport, just do a quick check here, the wind a little bit lighter, east at 6 mph. We're 64, will feel like 64°. The wind right now and the wind gust that continued at about 10 to 15 mph will continue to step down. I'll bring you over to the current winds here when I see you back in just a few minutes. But as I mentioned, lots of 60s down to 64° now, 69 here for the beaches where we started, and 60s with the one lone 70 holding on over there at Valdosta. And the temperature dew point spread, pretty good margins here in the 40s and 50s, plenty of room for these temperatures to drop to what will be a cool start to the morning. But like I showed you earlier, and you already know that here with the drop monitor that we've got the area from exceptional with fires that continue to burn, and I would say that the crux of what we're seeing in the fires here between Putnam County, the one that straddles into Clay, the one that we have here for Brantley County, and into southeast Georgia, most of those are in the extreme areas where we have the drought. And as far as any significant rainfall, not seeing it at all. If anything, about a tenth of an inch could be possible as we move through Sunday. Looks like it'll be the best chance. And possibly some of the models try to slow things down into Monday. I've been showing you the beach forecast because of what has been the onshore flow, kind of keeping the smoke out of the area. Tomorrow you might smell some as the wind starts to shift with that southerly component, daytime highs will make another run into the upper 70s, even lower 80s. High risk for rip currents as the waves continue, and those two looked rather tasty here for today. For tonight, we'll see temperatures anywhere between the 40s and 50s inland. Our beaches will find temperatures hovering around the lower 60s with Jacksonville getting down to about 49°, and that'll be the base building another afternoon daytime highs in a dry atmosphere only topping out in those lower 80s. And as that southeasterly wind comes through, upper 70s and even lower 80s will be possible here along the area beaches. So, for the hump of the work week, we'll keep it at a nine, no significant changes here in the forecast. We need some rain to get that number to come up. Upper 40s under those clear skies here for tonight, smoke could cause visibility issues under those light winds that will settle back down to ground level. Similar forecast for Thursday, a little warmer Friday, and then we're back to those near record highs as we look to the weekend, which comes with the best chance for rain that we'll see all week.
