Creating naturalistic reptile enclosures involves mimicking the animal's native habitat through strategic material selection and layering techniques, where excavator's clay creates authentic red rock textures that transform from bright red when wet to chalky desert sand when dry, while cork bark and natural sticks provide climbing structures and visual depth, ultimately producing an environment that encourages natural behaviors like climbing and perching.

Our Largest Snake Gets A Huge Home Upgrade!Added:
This giant enclosure is going to be the new home for our largest snake. The enclosure is a massive 4tx 4t x two foot deep and it will be the biggest buildout we have ever done. So, we have a lot of work to do. First, let's introduce you to our largest snake, Alice, the brittleles carpet bite.
>> We've had her for about 4 years, and I'm super excited to give her this upgrade.
She's my favorite snake, and I can't be more happy for her.
>> But pretty much all of our snakes are getting giant upgrades. So, make sure you subscribe and hit the little notification bell so you can see all of the buildouts in real time because we'll be doing those over the next few months.
>> Pretty much what we're going to be mimicking is where Alice comes from, which is the red center of Australia.
So, think scrub lands, red rocks, olaroo. Really cool setup, man. I'm super excited to see how this build's going to go.
>> But this is a big project and we need an entire materials list of what we need to actually get this build done. So, let's go write that out. We need 13 cans of spray foam, three tubes of caul, a coaul gun, paver stones, desert gravel or sand, some excavators clay, cork bark, and of course, some sticks and decoration for the enclosure.
>> Well, I found the gun. That means we still have a lot of other materials to go through, but at least this is one off the list.
>> First stop, >> Menards.
>> All right, where are we going first?
>> Let's go get some spray foam and caulk.
We want the clear, not anything colored that we have to paint over or anything like that. as minimal steps as possible.
Right. And now spray foam. We got 14 cans here of the Great Stuff Pond and Stone. This is exactly what we want cuz it is animal safe and it's black. So, we're going to use this.
>> Next, we're going to hit up the garden center.
>> To be honest with you guys, I've never even been to a minor before. This place is pretty cool. What do you guys think?
This is sweet. What is this going to be for?
>> So, this is going to be for Alice's terracing and to kind of like help alleviate some of the pressure of the wood from falling over. And then we can go over this with the excavators clay to give it that red rock look, but it also gives some dimension and coloration to >> texture, too.
>> Heck yeah.
>> Check the list. This is everything we need from here. Now, it's time to go hit some pet stores to get the softcaping stuff.
>> One of the big things we need for softcaping, I guess it's kind of the hardcape as well, is excavators clay.
And we have some at the reptile room, but not nearly enough. We're going to have to scout a couple other pet shops, too. Have a great one.
>> You too.
You ready?
>> Ready. Let's go.
>> Let's do it.
>> Richard, >> what's up, man?
>> Oh, dude. Nice to see you. What are you doing here?
>> Oh, just hanging out with Mo, checking out the reptile room, doing a little uh photography.
>> We're filming a pretty crazy video this week, huh?
>> I believe so. Yeah, man.
>> Are you ready?
>> I'm excited.
>> He's going headtohead this week with Tarantula Cat. It's going to be a brutal video. So, make sure you guys subscribe to the Reptile Room channel so you don't miss a single second of that craziness.
Who you voting for?
>> I'm going with Cat.
>> You got to go with Cat. I mean, cat rips.
>> Cat does rip.
>> And obviously, we're here at the reptile room, which is so awesome that we have the ability to come here, hang out with Moina and their family, and also grab all of our odds and ends for our reptile enclosure buildouts. Maria went to look for excavators. Clay, I'm going to look for some stickers.
There's some nice ones in here, bro.
What do you guys think? You guys like any of these? These are pretty sweet.
>> That looks sick. And that one looks pretty sweet, too.
Sick. Those two pieces of driftwood look really cool. I'm going to see what Maria thinks when she gets back up here.
Elena, what are you doing?
>> I found a bug on the ground.
>> And you're just going to hang out with it, huh?
>> I was going to put them outside.
>> Got a new best friend.
>> Yeah, for a little bit.
>> Dude, Elena's talking about slime mold again, man.
>> Oh my god. It doesn't end.
>> It doesn't end.
>> We have a whole group chat that's like slime mold love.
>> Yeah, I think it's infected her. Is he doing a portrait of the slime mold?
>> Yeah. She's gonna put it over the picture of the kids.
>> Yeah.
>> Do you know what I'm saying?
>> Yeah.
>> They think I'm obsessed with it.
>> She is obsessed with Yeah. You're definitely obsessed with it. Look at You're You're showing Richard like >> Slime is one of the coolest things I've ever heard of.
>> There's a little sprint wiggling.
>> She It's like she just had a baby.
>> You see it wiggling? So excited.
>> Did you find goods?
>> I found goods.
>> What do you got?
>> Three bags of excavators and the sand that I want.
>> So, we have enough excavators, Clay.
>> Hopefully.
>> Okay. I also found something. You want to come see?
>> Yes.
>> What do you think? Yes.
>> Yeah.
>> Yes.
>> Okay.
>> That's going to look awesome.
>> You guys are coming with me. I feel like Zeus.
>> Well, we'll uh we'll catch you in a little bit.
>> All right, man.
>> All right.
I'm already bleeding. This buildout's going to go great.
This is going to be crazy.
>> Why?
>> Look at how big this thing is. We have a lot of space to fill.
>> All right. So, what's the first step?
>> Start playing around with these sticks, seeing where we're putting those, and then we can do all the other hardcape around it. Babe, these sticks are awesome.
>> Yeah, those are sweet, huh?
>> Sorry about that. These have some really cool shape. I'm really excited to see what Alice is going to look like on these. We could do something kind of like this.
>> Then we can use that other piece.
>> This is sick.
>> I forgot cork bark.
>> We did. Got it.
>> Oh my gosh, that's a lot of cork.
>> Gosh, please.
>> Now we're good.
>> Yes.
>> We got to get this stuff out real fast.
>> We got to get this stuff out.
This >> piece is so craggy.
It's >> monster.
>> That is huge. How much do you think we spend on this? So far, >> too much >> like 1,500.
>> Oh, probably.
>> This is far and away the most expensive enclosure we've ever built for any of our animals. Probably including our dogs, to be honest with you.
>> So, what I'm doing is I'm trying to just like figure out the pieces that I want to like lay out. Kind of wanting to like create like different spots. The whole back end is not going to be just cork. I want to kind of cover up some of it with the excavator's clay. I think I'm kind of liking where this is going to go.
When we put those other sticks in, it'll kind of give it movement this way. So, it almost looked like the tree got stripped of its bark.
Maria has gotten so good at building out enclosures, it's crazy. Over the last few months, she's been building out enclosures for obviously the reptile room, but also their customers. People can come in and actually request Maria build out their enclosure for their personal reptile, and they look super sweet. So, if you ever want one, make sure you stop by the reptile room and request for Maria to build out an enclosure for you.
>> All right, guys. I know this kind of looks a little crazy, but I promise you like once we get this thing moving, you're going to see it all come together.
>> You got to trust the process.
>> Exactly. Everything always looks so much worse before it gets even better. But before I finish this off, the next step is trying to see if I can fit that lightning bolt piece of stick as the final piece and then we can wait for like 12 24 hours and then we can start working on the rest of it.
>> I think to try to follow this line as much as possible, but I would say be over it this way more than over it this way.
Good. Don't even breathe, Maria.
>> That actually looks better. It follows almost perfect right there. Don't even If you can get it right there, that's perfect.
>> Is this good?
>> Yeah.
>> All right. Cool. So then I'm going to nail that side down and we're good. This is the most important one. This thick part of the base here. This might look kind of ugly right now, but there is a way to cover all this up, and that's what we're going to end up doing later on.
Now we just let this cure and it'll all kind of puff up and then fill in the gaps and we can just carve all the excess away and start working some more.
>> Okay. Well, while we wait, you got a bunch of new friends from that popup shop thing that we did over at the reptile room a couple days ago. If you guys haven't seen that video, I'll put a link in the description cuz we had an awesome little like mini expo for tarantulas over at the reptile room. It was awesome. But you got new friends.
>> I did.
>> You want to show me?
>> Absolutely. Let's go. This is actually one of 18 of my bucket list tarantulas that I really really want.
>> Wait a second. 18? That's very specific.
>> Yes. I was in a deep dive of tarantulas a couple nights ago and I was like messaging Mo and Alina back and forth like I don't know almost till 12:00 in the morning. We were just BSing about tarantulas. And this is a Peruvian green velvet sling. It's so tiny. It looks like nothing right now.
>> Yeah. I haven't even seen it yet.
>> It's right here.
>> Okay, now I see it.
>> Yeah. And what I'm telling you, like this thing's tiny. It's like no bigger than my fingernail. Mostly like my pinky fingernail. But when you see what this thing looks like as an adult, it's really beautiful. And green's one of my favorite colors. So, it's like super cool to see something else that's kind of green.
>> But that's not all you got.
>> No, it's not. So, this dude is hiding.
Unfortunately, we won't be able to see him. But this is a North American species of centipede. It is a sorin green. Also, insert how cool this thing looks up there. It's not a super dangerous species. Its venom is not super significant yet. Kind of sucks to get bit by it. But it's not like the Asiatic species, but if you're still allergic to insects, I still don't recommend handling any centipede. And they only get like roughly 5 to 6 in, which is not a giant, but still impressive.
>> That's what she said.
>> But that's not all you got.
>> That's not I still have one more.
>> Wo, that's a big enclosure.
>> Yeah.
>> What is this?
>> This dude's a bigger dude in here. He's actually hiding in the skull. This is a Colombian giant redlegg tarantula. He's pretty nifty looking. And the other day he came crawling out of the eye socket and >> Oh, that must have been so sick.
>> It looks so cool. Alina surprised me with something. I'm going to go grab it.
>> Oh, no way. A new queen.
>> It's a new queen. And you know, I have a soft spot for the queen. I often wear a shirt or a hoodie that has it on there.
>> This is like one of your favorite plants.
>> It is. It literally says queen in the front and like black metal logo letters.
And I honestly adore this plant so much unfortunately. And this happens and it bums me out, but it got damaged pretty badly in the move. I wasn't really able to save it. So, the fact that she even surprised me with it after so long, I love them to death. Like, I can't believe she even did this for me. Like, I I was literally crying when she showed it.
>> This is so sick.
>> This is awesome. Okay, it's the next day and this is pretty much dry. What do you think so far?
>> So far, I'm liking this appearance of it. Next, it's going to be uh carving off the extra pieces and getting this to actually start to take shape.
>> You excited?
>> I am so hyped right now.
>> So, I left it flush with the foam as much as I can so that way it was like kind of uniform with the bark, but still kept the texture so it looked like bark.
I accidentally cut too deep on one part, but that's what silicone fixes. So, I just have to read that there and then we can get to the seaming work. NOW, are you guys starting to see the vision come together? It's crazy to think Maria's only been building out enclosures like this for a little bit. I can't wait to see how good she is in a few years from now when she has, you know, a hundred enclosures under her belt. What are you guys thinking? What's your favorite part of this so far? and let us know down in the comments if you have any suggestions for what we should do for another build. And again, don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss any of those enclosure builds that we do in the future. Maria, it looks so good.
>> Isn't it starting to come together? Look at the way that the rocks look too with the excavator's clay and the color it got. Next is the moment of truth.
>> We don't know if everything is even adhered properly and it could all just kind of topple forward.
>> Fingers crossed it doesn't.
It looks so good with the lighting coming from the top.
>> Oh, heck yeah. I think it did pretty good.
>> Luigi, get out of there. Get out of there. Every swing of that brush is revealing more and more of the cork bark that's in this awesome backdrop. The tree portion of this enclosure build is pretty much done. I think this is looking super super cool. Maria did a great job not only with foaming everything in, but also making everything blend together really well.
Now it's on to the actual ooluru style red rock background that Maria's going to put next to the tree to fill in the rest of the space. This is the part of the project that really is going to make it feel like Alice's home in the red center of Australia. The trees and plants will be beautiful, but when people think Australia, they think red rocks and red sand. And that's exactly what the excavator's clay is going to present when it's dried up and gets all crackly.
>> So good.
>> And I didn't do this. I just let it dry.
So it's >> that's sick.
>> Really cool to like just let it happen.
No, this looks absolutely awesome. What are you doing now?
>> So, next I'm going to continue working on staining the rest of the slate that I have. Um, so I got more excavators clay cuz naturally I underestimated myself and used up all of what I had and that was like 30 lb of it. But I actually did a couple with whatever I had left over.
So, let me show you how that looks. This is one of the finished pieces. It looks really cool and bright red when when it's wet, but when it's dry it looks really kind of like chalky looking.
>> Yeah, that's it.
>> It looks really really neat. And this is what they look like pre-stained.
>> Oh, sweet. So really match that more like red desert color. I mean really it does look like red desert sand itself.
>> Right. It looks really dope. I love how the cracks naturally formed on their own.
>> It just looks so good with the light coming down from the top as opposed to flat lighting the whole thing.
>> Yeah. And then once we get the heating elements and the lights and stuff on there, it's going to make it look so good. And then I still have rocks and greenery and stuff to add to this too.
So we're not even done yet.
You like it?
>> Like it. It looks awesome.
>> Well, thank you. Well, today's finishing touch day. Mixing the substrate, adding the greenery, cleaning off the sides, like dusting it off a little bit, making it look a little cleaner, and then introducing Alice.
>> Luigi, you going to help? No going to help? I don't think you guys are going to do much help.
>> Yeah, I didn't think so.
I've always liked playing in the dirt. I like playing with bugs and I love gardening. So, always dirt.
>> And now it was time to add the plants.
Probably going to be one of my favorite parts of this entire build because it really will bring this enclosure to life and cover up any areas that didn't blend perfectly. Obviously, because of the desert landscape, Maria went for more aid type plants. This thing has come out so good, and I'm so proud of Maria for all the hard work she put into this.
Maria, you have worked so dang hard on this. This looks so good. We're going to put her in.
>> You think she's ready?
>> I think she's ready.
>> All right, Alice.
>> You have no idea. This is all for you.
>> I can't believe the moment has finally come. Alice is getting to see her new enclosure and it literally looks like she's reaching out for it. She quickly got to work climbing and finding areas to perch up on. It's just so awesome to be able to give our animals a new home like this. You know, we've been lovers of reptiles for our whole life really, but working with them daily for almost the last 10 to 11 years. And to be able to finally start giving our animals such huge upgrades like this is such a big deal to us. And I'm just so happy that we've even had the chance to do this.
And quite literally, we couldn't do any of this without you guys. So, thank you guys. so much for helping our animals live their best lives.
>> I'm so happy we got to do this for her, man. This is great. Look at her go. She looks amazing.
>> She looks so good. You did a great job.
Proud of you.
>> Thank you.
>> And let us know what you think down in the comments. Give Maria her flowers.
She crushed it on this. And now that Alice got in her new enclosure, I bet she's never going to want to come out.
But speaking of out,
