Native grasses like Barbed Wire Grass (lemongrass) are planted after cultural burning to restore forest floor vegetation, as these fire-adapted plants can quickly re-establish and outcompete invasive species like Setaria and Paspalum, while also providing traditional medicinal benefits for headaches and pain management.

Why Are We Planting This Native Grass? 🌱 #consciousground #culturalburning #regenerativefarmingAdded:
We're going to do a cultural burn over in the forest in a couple of months, probably in a month and a half. And after we do the burn, the slow burn will burn through the forest floor and it'll knock out a lot of the weeds and the Setaria and Paspalum grasses that are coming up in the forest. So, I've sourced some native barbed wire grass seed from off the farm, propagated it, and now I've got it up into tubes, as you can see.
After we do our burn through the forest, I'll leave the forest to settle for a 2 weeks and then we'll go through and we'll do a mass planting of barbed wire grass to get native grasses back through the forest floor. And hopefully this grass will just dominate the area and just populate it quicker than the the Setaria [music] grasses can come back.
Also, I'll still be doing a bit of hand weeding through there, just around the grasses to [music] make sure that these guys get the best start they can get.
So, and this stuff later on we can burn the forest again with the barbed wire grass and it'll bounce back after a fire. And it is also edible cuz this is native lemongrass as well as a common name. So, the lemongrass can be used [music] for headaches and pain management and ailments. It's just good to have the native plants back where they should be.
