Bad Sequels CAN Ruin Great Movies… Here’s Why

[00:00:00][music] >> Do you think it's possible for bad sequel to ruin your enjoyment of the original film or at least slightly tarnish it even if you loved it before?

[00:00:14]1,000% and that is the issue with Alien 3 and Terminator [snorts] Reloaded.

[00:00:21]That those movies, those sequels intentionally undo victories from the previous film.

[00:00:35]Aliens the reason it's so satisfying in the end is because Ripley is triumphant in saving Newt.

[00:00:46]And you get to the end of it like, yes, we did it. And they came up with an intro to Alien 3 that immediately goes, just kidding, no you didn't.

[00:00:56]So that feeling of victory I felt watching a movie is now undermined. No, you weren't victorious. You didn't win.

[00:01:03]You just thought you did. And the real ending is what happened between the films and we don't even see it.

[00:01:10]And it cheapens something.

[00:01:12]>> [snorts] >> And like that's why I have to compartmentalize and go like Alien 3's in this box over here in this weird fan fiction from lunatics that want to kill Newt.

[00:01:20]Versus over here's Aliens with my my emotional feelings about it. And then likewise, the thing that's so satisfying about the original Matrix is it's all built around this mystery of Neo and the chosen one and the prophecy.

[00:01:37]And you get to the last 10 minutes of that movie and um the the way that they they they build up Neo's journey, the revelation, what he's told, what the Oracle tells him and you go into this third act where he just chooses to act even believing he will fail or believing that he he isn't the one to to fully do all of this, but he's the one that has to.

[00:02:01]And it the way the the the last 20 minutes of that movie plays out of everyone else believes that he's the one before he does cuz he does not think he's the one and then you have this revelation towards the end and it's it's so good. It's so satisfying. It's taking so many elements from Eastern Western philosophy, really religion, um Carl Young uh Joseph Campbell hero's journey. It does all of this stuff.

[00:02:30]And then Matrix Reloaded goes just kidding.

[00:02:35]That was all a ploy of the robots.

[00:02:38]And you go You did a perfect modern-day version of the hero's journey in this sci-fi world inspired by anime and Hong Kong action and martial arts and gun fu movies and you merged it all together perfectly.

[00:03:00]And then you just went, just kidding, let's deconstruct it all without having something better on the other side.

[00:03:07]You just took your whole thing apart.
