In May 2026, North Korea held its 11th Congress of the Socialist Patriotic Youth League in Pyongyang, which outlined three core goals: summarizing the Youth League Central Committee's work, discussing amendments to the league's rules and charter, and electing new leadership members. The congress emphasized the relationship between the Workers Party of Korea and the Youth League, with representatives highlighting how the league should evolve to support the party line established in February's Workers Party Congress. This Month in North Korea | May 2026Añadido:
At the start of the month, the 11th Congress of the Socialist Patriotic Youth League was held in Pyongyang, outlining the goals and objectives of the League following February's Congress of the Workers Party of Korea. All topped off with a torch-like parade through downtown Pyongyang.
On the 17th of May, a meeting of the nation's top military commanding officers was held in Pyongyang, headed by commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Kim Jong-un, alongside the chief of the defense staff and top advisers to the Ministry of National Defense as part of efforts to improve and develop the military. On the 23rd of May, the DPRK's Neyang football team from Pyongyang beat Japan's Tokyo Verdie in Suon, South Korea to win the 2026 AFC Women's Champions League, adding another feather into the cap for women's football in the DPRK. Seen as a regional powerhouse of the sport, this is your monthly rundown of events in DPRK state media for May 2026.
Between the 28th and 30th of April, the DPRK's leading youth organization, the Socialist Patriotic Youth League, held its 11th congress at the Pyongyang Indoor Stadium in the nation's capital.
The first such congress since the last event was held in April 2021.
The meeting of the league outlined three core goals. Firstly, to summarize the work of the Youth League Central Committee.
Secondly, to discuss changes and amendments to the league's rules and its charter. And thirdly, to elect new members to the leadership bodies of the youth league.
The meeting kicked off with an address by Kim Jong on behalf of the Workers Party of Korea Central Committee addressed both to the conference and to young people in the country more broadly.
During the conference, representatives from each provincial committee of the Socialist Patriotic Youth League made contributions, often highlighting the relationship between the Workers Party of Korea and the Youth League, and how the league should evolve to support the party line that was laid out in February when the whole party gathered in Pyongyang for the 9th Workers Party Congress. The league itself was founded on the 17th of January 1946, less than a year after liberation from Japan. Originally founded as the Democratic Youth League of North Korea and a member of the World Federation of Democratic Youth, the conference was rounded off in spectacular fashion in Kimlang Square as members of the precidium of the central committee Him Jerong and Niran were joined on the dis by members of the party and youth league to witness an evening gala.
This was followed by a torch-like procession through Kimmel Sang Square.
Torch-like parades in the DPRK are one of the most technically impressive types of parades held on Pyongyang's main square with thousands of participants using lit flames to spell out words, create revolutionary symbols, and display loyalty to the party and the Korean Revolution.
On the 17th of May, a meeting was held at the headquarters of the Workers Party of Korea in Pyongyang, gathering the nation's top military brass alongside the general secretary Kim Jong-un, chief of the defense staff of the Korean People's Army, Lie Yong Gil, and Pak Jong Chong, key adviser to the Ministry of National Defense.
The reporting on the meeting highlighted a focus on continuing the technological development of the Korean People's Army, something which has dominated the political story in Korea over the past few years and notably calling on these division and brigade commanders to take the lead in carrying out this new modernization campaign. The meeting also focused on bolstering defenses along the southern border with South Korea, continuing to strengthen the national line that Seoul represents the most significant hostile force from the perspective of Pyongyang and noting that more work needs to be done to ensure an effective military deterrence.
The Korean People's Army has undergone rapid modernization in recent years with new investment in unmanned aerial vehicles, new main battle tanks, and a significant expansion of the development of naval assets being a major feature of news media over the past few years. For more information on its history and how the Korean People's Army is changing, check out this recent video on that very topic. This meeting demonstrated that the continued strengthening of the nation's conventional armed forces is still a major priority within the party and the state.
On the 23rd of May, the women's football team Neyang was catapulted not just into domestic news media, but international as they beat Japan in the final of the AFC Women's Champions League in Suon, South Korea.
Women's football in the DPRK is growing in popularity both domestically but also on the world stage where they have won the under20s women world cup three times since 2006 and the women's national team is ranked 10th worldwide.
The winning team Neohyang Women's FC whose name means literally my hometown is a Pyongyang based football club competing in the top tier of Korean football, the DPRK Women's Premier League.
The victory in Suon means that Negoyang has won the right to represent Asia in next year's 2027 FIFA Women's Champions Cup, where each continental conference puts forward a champion team to compete.
The story drew international attention as the matches played in South Korea represented a rare moment of inter Korean engagement. Something which representatives of DPRK football brushed aside instead choosing to focus on the sporting aspect of the competition and the significance of the growing success of women's football in the DPRK.
The players of Negoyang were welcomed back to Pyongyang following the victory with huge fanfare, being met by local fans and news crews from Korean Central Television, which had previously aired the final match in full.
In regional news, at the start of the month, as the weather improves and summer approaches, a report was carried on the SDN International Children's Camp, a site near Wansan City on the DPRK's East Coast, which every year plays host to children from across the country to engage in sports, extracurricular activities, and additional education.
Despite undergoing remodeling in recent years, the school children's camp has been operating for decades with children from the Allied Soviet Union and Eastern block often sending children to spend time at the camp during the summer months.
On the 3rd of May, a report was carried on the situation regarding the national electricity grid and power production.
This report highlighted the development of new power plants in recent years and the increases in electricity output during that same period. The specific focus on hydroelectric power plants and the development of new electricity generation really highlights how seriously the DPRK is taking its electricity generation as we enter a period of increased economic production and construction nationwide.

On the 23rd of May, coverage included a report on the Musan Mining Cooperative, which operates a major mine in the northeast of the country, as they moved forward with a planned new explosive blast to displace another 1.2 million cub m of material to continue iron and steel production.
This month also included a Congress meeting of the General Federation of Trade Unions of Korea in Pyongyang and a meeting of the Chongyon Association of Korean Residents in Japan held in Tokyo.
Throughout the month, more broadly, economic development reports continue to dominate media reporting with updates on how many local work units had received single, double, and triple commendations for their work, as well as coverage of rural development programs, agricultural centers, and heavy industry across the DPRK.
