Police Warn Motorists As New LIDAR Speed Devices Go Live

[00:00:01]So going at the days where you would see the police vehicle parked up in visible places, I saw some very humorous um social media memes with police hiding in the bush and all of that to catch people speeding.

[00:00:15]Technology has taken over and we are now embracing that technology to bring road safety to Trayad and Tobago.

[00:00:23]That's the assurance from police commissioner Listister Gavaro who says officers will no longer need to manually operate speed guns as 20 new lighter speed devices will be strategically installed across major roadways. The new lighter speed devices are designed to detect speeding violations with greater precision while reducing human error.

[00:00:44]Road safety coordinator Brent Batson explained that the technology is being adopted by law enforcement agencies worldwide due to its reliability and advanced features.

[00:00:56]>> Our technology goes further because we can actually get uh image captures of the uh vehicle registrations plate printed out to provide the driver with the evidence.

[00:01:08]Our new technology also has with it night what we call license plate illuminators that allow a high level of enforcement during the night when we know most of the speeding tends to take place. This has expanded now so that we can cover all police divisions.

[00:01:28]Transport Commissioner Clive Clark is urging motorists to obey posted speed limits, reminding that speeding offenses attract various fines depending on the severity of the violation.

[00:01:40]>> Those tiers are speed limit above 1k to 9 kilometers, $2,000.

[00:01:51]The second tier we talk about between 10 to 20 $40,000.

[00:01:59]And then the third tier which spans between 20 to 30 there about carries $4,000 and then the final tier above 31.

[00:02:10]>> Meanwhile, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Eli Zachary emphasized that the introduction of the devices is about saving lives.

[00:02:20]When motorists know that speeding can be detected, behavior changes. And when behavior changes, lives are saved. These devices are not about punishment for punishment's sake. They're about deterrence. They're about prevention.

[00:02:37]And they about ensuring that law- abiding citizens, pedestrians, passengers, and families are better protected every single day.

[00:02:46]The lighter speed enforcement devices were officially launched at the Audrey Jeffers Highway layby near the foreshore on Tuesday morning. Daniel John, TTT News.
