The video cleverly uses neuroscience to explain John Wick's focus, making a choreographed movie scene feel like a real psychological study. However, it borders on over-analyzing a scripted performance as if it were a spontaneous biological event.

The REAL Reason John Wick Is UNSTOPPABLE During The Red Circle Scene | Body Language EXPERT Reacts
Added:Immediately after John spots Victor, he experiences a sharp spike in his arousal and we see him open his mouth as his respiration rate increases. Seeing him triggers a surge in sympathetic activation as his brain prepares to enter the fight response, releasing adrenaline into the bloodstream via the adrenal glands. This causes his heart rate to rise, increasing his breathing to supply more oxygen to the body. What this shows is that John holds an extreme amount of rage towards him for what he did.
>> [music] >> When walking, John is experiencing hyperfixation and then performs a head tilt, which improves his auditory processing. By tilting the heads and offsetting the ears on the vertical axis, the brain can more precisely locate the source of the sound and this occurs when the defense mechanism becomes triggered, sharpening his sensory input and narrowing his attention. It shows that John is fully locked in in the fight response here.
>> Are you scared of the [ __ ] boogeyman?
I'm not. No?
But you be.
>> I want another bottle.
Right [ __ ] now. Go get me a bottle.
Come on.
>> Yosef is completely arrogant here. And when asking if Kirill is scared of the boogeyman, he immediately performs a suppressed smile. Although he's being arrogant on the surface to look powerful, like he doesn't care, deep down he genuinely doesn't see John as a threat, which is why he smiles but immediately suppresses it. He's so arrogant to the point that it genuinely amuses him thinking that there's someone after him.
>> Hello, Francis.
Mr. Viggo.
>> The typical who deal.
20 kg.
>> Done.
>> The pigeon lied.
>> Are you here on business, sir?
>> Great suit, Francis.
Why don't you take the night off?
>> Thank you, sir.
>> The moment he feels the handgun, Francis immediately performs a prolonged blink, which is a form of distancing behavior.
He does this to momentarily disengage from the situation so he can process the threat with less cognitive strain. He then immediately performs the globus response, swallowing as a result of a huge spike in his sympathetic arousal.
He's terrified here, and an interesting fact, John is subtly asking him how many guards are inside, to which he responds over 60.
>> Treacherous.
[ __ ] you, [ __ ] Merciless.
>> This is interesting. John only expresses extreme facial tension here immediately before attacking, which shows that this isn't an emotional release, but a physiological response. When attacking, the defense mechanism increases muscle tension to prepare itself for action, whilst also dampening pain perception as part of gate control theory.
So, John appears completely emotionless here, showing no visible change in his non-verbals when telling Victor how he wronged him. And this is because he's in the fight response, where his emotional expression is being suppressed. His brain is prioritizing sensory processing over emotional regulation. He's not lacking emotion, he's tightly regulating it to remain focused and in control, showing just how experienced and effective John is.
>> [music] [music] [music and singing] [music] >> So, John is firmly in the fight response here, and he's actively threat scanning with his brain reducing all non-essential motor output to keep his profile low and make him harder to detect. This is why he moves slowly and methodically, minimizing movement to avoid revealing his position. And this is regulated subconsciously by the PAG system in the brain stem. And the moment he sees Josef, he freezes and performs what's called gaze locking, focusing all of his attention on him.
>> [music] [singing and music] [music] >> So, this is insane. And what we're seeing here is an extreme form of hyper fixation. He locks his eyes with the guard until the exact moment that he dies. And this is threat monitoring. The guy could scream or fight back. So, John's brain focuses all of its attention on monitoring him right until the moment he becomes no threat anymore.
It's brutal efficiency and is driven by the fight response being extremely active.
>> [music and singing] >> So, John's fight response actually creates a blind spot here. He's so hyper fixated on Yosuf that he misses the additional guard approaching behind him.
This is because the defense mechanism prioritizes the most immediate threat, and attention to all other stimuli is reduced. It's an evolutionary trade-off optimizing speed over broader awareness, which is why this moment catches John off guard. We evolved to operating groups of people where this trade-off would be less impactful.
So, this is really interesting. John literally has Yosuf in his sights here, but decides not to pull the trigger.
John wants to terrify Yosuf before killing him, which is why he lets him stew in fear for a moment before executing him. And he can literally see the fear in his face. And this is because Yosuf immediately enters a freeze response as his amygdala recognizes the threat. He then expresses a globus response, swallowing due to extreme muscle tension in his throat brought on by his defense mechanism being activated. And John literally fails his mission here because he let his own emotion get in the way, allowing time for the hidden guard to interrupt.
>> [screaming] >> Youssou turn around.
>> John is being entirely driven by emotion here and this shows in his non-verbals.
He is fixated on Youssou which causes a massive reduction in his situational awareness. This is even visualized here when the music fades and the scene shifts into slow motion which is what's called attentional narrowing.
This helps when focused on a threat as it reduces cognitive load and reduces reaction time but Youssou isn't a threat here. The guards are the threat. His brain is prioritizing the wrong target creating a dangerous blind spot nearly resulting in him being shot.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Quick done it. Quick done it.
>> So John is again expressing hyper fixation here and the cinematography reflects this. The view of Youssou is in normal speed with the camera shaking and appearing disorientated whereas John is seen in entirely slow motion, controlled and composed. And Youssou is fully in the fight response here experiencing extreme sympathetic arousal as his defense mechanism floods his body with adrenaline. John on the other hand is composed but still operates with narrowed attention locking his eyes onto Youssou. Youssou is reacting like prey whereas John is moving like a predator.
>> [ __ ] He's [ __ ] here. He's [ __ ] here.
He's dead. He's coming.
>> [music] [music] [music] >> So it's this part of the scene where we really get to see John's experience come through. As he enters the room, he performs rapid head movement driven by the superior colliculus as a form of threat scanning. And after killing the final guard on the floor, John deliberately pauses for a second to reorient himself. Fighting causes the brain to restrict its attention on the immediate threat resulting in disorientation from the surroundings.
And John consciously pauses to reassess the situation before moving on. It's to stop him from making mistakes.
>> [music] [music] >> So we can see John frozen here, but this is not part of the freeze response. When in the fight response, the basal ganglia system in the brain restricts all non-essential motor output to reduce visual profile and also increase focus.
He then performs conscious point checks, systematically scanning for threats, but he looks almost robotic here due to the reduced motor output.
>> [music] >> Again. Again.
Come on. Come on.
>> [screaming] [music] >> So after being shot and when returning fire, John expresses extreme facial tension and also bites his jaw down. And this is called bruxism and is part of gate control theory. John is in a whole load of pain and reacts with extreme muscle tension, which also manifests in his jaw. The biting creates proprioceptive feedback that helps block the pain signals from being transmitted to the brain stem, reducing the pain sensation that he feels. Getting shot releases a flood of adrenaline into his system, spiking his sympathetic arousal, causing him to express rapid head movement as well as shouts. He has now lost his composure and is a mess of chemicals. And what happens next is effectively a brawl.
>> [music] [music] >> Victor's dead.
>> So, both John and Kirill are in a state of extreme arousal here, with John in significant pain after being shot. He is losing control of the situation fast, and we can see strong facial and jaw tension, showing extreme sympathetic arousal. Under this level of stress, activity in the prefrontal cortex is reduced, impairing his decision-making ability and impeding fine motor control, which is why John loses here. He loses his composure. It's a really detailed and well-acted scene that shows John's obsession with revenge compromising his mission.
