This video discusses Nigeria's political landscape, highlighting how political calculations often prioritize personal interest over institutional requirements, as exemplified by debates over Senate leadership eligibility rules and President Jonathan's potential presidential bid; the analysis reveals that political actors frequently make decisions based on power preservation rather than democratic principles, with citizens expressing willingness to accept potentially flawed leadership if it serves their political interests.

And um I I didn't know that they would reverse rule so quickly. Obviously the interest you see one one thing about one thing I still say about uh the Mr. President is that you you cannot fault him. It's difficult to fault him politically. You might talk about the values and morals and whatever but to get the job done politically it's difficult to fault him.
thinking ahead. Um it is being said that this uh what's the name of this governor now from the east has been tipped to be the next Senate President and so the work has started now and um the thinking is that the there was there was a rule that came up uh that said that it's only a Senate somebody who had been a senator in the first and second republics that can put himself forward to be Senate President.
Uh but it looks as if the Jagaban is preparing himself for after 2027, he doesn't want to be caught by surprise.
That is the way it appears to me.
And one thing you can't take away from that man is when his eyes are on something, that's it. Unfortunately, the president's eyes will be on many things, especially the welfare of the people, but he concentrates on politics, and that's what it is. And what's the name of the governor again?
>> Oppoadima.
>> Oppoa. Yes. This is one of those Fridays I'm just feeling sleepy. So that's what it is. Now I taking away the the dramatist personality taking away the people involved and the politics of it.
I think it just made common sense to say that at least anybody who is going to be Senate President should have been in the Senate for one term. At the very least.
I don't think the leadership of the Senate is a training ground. Um I I don't think so for trial and error. Um it makes sense in fact it makes sense for the person to be wellversed in the rules and the practices in the Senate. But politicians don't think that way. They always think out of out of um personal interest. So it says that the Senate rescended the commercial amendments of a standing order following concerns by lawmakers that some of the provisions were inconsistent with the 1999 constitution. There's always something you can dig up to put to help your argument. Um and it says that the reversal came barely days after the upper chamber amended portions of its rule. a move that had triggered controversy and sharp exchanges among senators. Anyway, this one not concern us. We have 2027 to face first. Um when we move from there, we will probably know what to do. So that is my take on that. And a quick one on Sunday. If you don't have anything doing on the island, I'd advise that you don't come to the risk area because the story here says that 55,000 Nigerians, I don't know how they got where they got the numbers from, are built to converge on Tafabala Square here and they having a special congregational prayer for Nigeria and President Ba Tonobu and it's been arranged by the director general of the renewed hope network, Muhammad Dol the question I just want to ask. So where is in all this? These are political campaigns.
Where is in all this? Uh but like I think it was John Lenon that sent the answer my friend. He's blowing he's blowing in the wind.
Okay. Sheriff, how about your message?
>> We're going to move on to our next um story quickly. Um let's go to the Daily Trust now. Page five of the trust has this uh full pager here. How Jonathan's presidential bid resurfaced. Jonathan's presidential bid resurfaced.
And um I knew there was something there was more than meets the eye when it was reported. Now listen to this sheriff.
sometime last month that Jonathan paid what was called a surprise visit to the president without an agenda.
See whilst um quite a number of people advocate advocating for change and for this and for that the major concern of the APC is that they are forever terrified whether you like it or not of Peter Obi that's what it is so anything that will stop him now part of then but the fears are different from various angles Peter Obi is not liked by any of the politicians because for the simple reason that we know or we are almost sure that it will not be business as usual and politicians like business as usual if you get what I'm saying and so part of it okay so for some of them who are from the north they are saying to themselves oh we have an says they have some agreement between Peter B and the north but experience has shown that hey if this man should this brought this thing on television I try to run. Sorry for the distraction.
If this man should if this man should gain power by whatever means and he's there for four years, >> the the next four years might just be automatic if even if he says that his supporters might push him to do it. So they feel safe with the Jonathan who will do just one time.
>> Yeah. So he has surfaced again. Now is there any nex sauce between the visit that he paid the president because they were all chummy and and whatever. We don't know what it was all about. But welcome to the welcome to political in intricacies.
Welcome to political intricacies. And um he's still saying this is one word I don't like to hear from anybody who wants to contact. consulting with who?
If you know you have something to produce, if you know you have the urge to lead the people, step forward and see if the people will accept you because when when you say you are consulting, let us ask ourselves. Is it in the habit of Nigerians to tell the man not to contest when it comes to your household?
He doesn't come alone. You understand?
Oh yes. Oh yeah. loved by everybody. Oh yes.
I would say to President Jonathan, don't test the waters.
History, God and history has placed you in a place that can be tainted if you decide to to to run. That's what happened to General Gawan when he came.
He had been so popular and appreciated by the country. Then politics came, he lost in his word.
He lost in his word. Even IBB oh thought that he can ride on the past glory. He put his feet in the water and quickly withdrew.
But Jonathan says that he's going to consult.
Um there is a why Jonathan is yet to make up his mind. Clauses sources close to him told the dators that he's actually confiding with his political allies on whether he should join the free. How long is it going to take him to to consult with these political allies? The source who worked with this expert in office said his court team is already working around the clock.
Ah there there there there but there's a gentleman called professor Ojo he's a political scientist and as usual daily trust I've done about two pages of this story so it's quite wide and he says that president Jonathan should be wary of psychopans willing willing on him to join the presidential race said that the Jonathan's attempt to recontest amounts to political gamble due to the legal hurdle rules before him. You know, he's in court. There's a court case on whether he is eligible to run or not.
And um a political analyst Zio and Professor Sal Duda they have dismissed calls by some urging President Jonathan to run saying his chances of victory are very slim. They argued that Jonathan had largely stayed away from partisan politics since leaving office in 2015 and had instead focused on his peace building activities across Africa. Let me read this quote.
He says, "This man has decided to mind his own business, certifying peace off peace efforts, observing elections across Africa and running his foundation. Why dragging into partisan politics now? The question you even ask yourself is in the real sense of it how acceptable is Jonathan to the polity in real terms. In real terms h remember that remember that it takes it has taken the perceived non-performance of president Tinubu for people to now say okay bring back Jonathan who a lot of us thought also performed badly during his time. What he had to his name is the fact that he he he did not encourage any form of violence and his usual quote that he his victory at the death of the death of his ambition is not what anybody's not anybody thank you very much top knuckles for that one >> yeah you know and if I if I were him I just retire quietly which his wife has also expressed >> um lady whatever But then in politics all kinds of intriguing up. So the question you ask yourself is is Jonathan being used as a spoiler.
Is Jonathan being used as a spoiler?
Cast your mind back to the pre-Bari days? Do you want to go back to what it was? Nigeria has been has gradually been going on a decline >> and unfortunately each it successive government has been has been worse than the previous one.
So, do we want to go to the back of the queue to start again?
>> Good question.
>> You answer it.
>> For what?
>> Did you think you were three? I was asking you >> that I'm asking now that >> I was going to take you to a party this afternoon, >> but I've changed my >> Let me answer.
>> We going to go to DJ.
>> Let me answer it.
>> Okay. So we have celebration of 80 years. Ah okay. Let me thank Mr. Frain who reminded me that um it was Bob Dylan that played blowing in the wind not John Lenon.
I'm sure that you are right.
Okay. in the party I was going to take sheriffs to. I will say now today is the 80th um birthday 80th um birthday of my very very good uncle my good major general tuin most of you do know him he's been here quite a few times um he's 80 today and um I would say congratulations to him um he's played quite a formidable formidable role in the well progress of some sort of Nigeria because he was a general. Uh he was in full service during the military days and um the his um the the genresence Petros Foundation which is a Lagos based organization described him as they say he stands strong and proud Nigerian and the Lagos state indigen school. Oh, what do you say when I needed a I don't know.
>> I'm I I'm not even going to help a remarkable symbol of discipline, patriotism and self service to our nation. So, we celebrate with him major 80 years. Um there one or two ads even the of Lagos signed one of them and my big brother Mr. Me Jones and they sell say after this. So for Lagosian today is a lot of eating and drinking and mernt.
>> Sure. Ah.
>> Oh lord. Oh my go drinking yellow.
>> Yellow. What?
Have you ever tasted alcohol?
>> No.
>> Because somebody has asked me that um asked me, "Have you and Ted ever gone out together?" I say, "Yes." A kilom.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Let's go. Pick our next story. Oh, wow.
Let's go pick our next story. Page five of the Vanguard. Xenophobia FG moves to evacuate Nigerians from South Africa.
>> Yeah. Okay. So, the latest development we have is the FD has, you know, started making moves um to get Nigerians out of South Africa uh those who are willing to go because this thing might die down and I hope it does if handled right. the the the the minister for foreign affairs Mrs. is Odum Goduku. She according to her the South African according to Odum Godu the South African minister for the South Africans have expressed reservations about Nigeria's evacuation plans but she has insisted that Nigerian government cannot ignore the continued harassment and alleg extra judicial killing of it citizens living in South Africa. She explained that the protest held on Duban on Wednesday.
Though the protest held on Wednesday did not degenerate into violence due to the heavy deployment of security personnel.
Nigerians in the areas were advised by the Nigerian mission to shut their businesses and stay indoors for safety reasons. She also expressed concerns over what she described as the inflammatory rhetoric and hostile actions by anti-forigner groups in South Africa, warning that the situation post serious risk to the lives and property of Nigerians and other African migrants.
So it's not Nigerians only, it's other >> African migrants. Um however there's this part says economics caution against blanket sanction on South African companies says meanwhile as sanctions continue to mount over the incessant xenophobic violence against Nigerians. Economic experts have warned against imposing blanket sanctions on South African companies operating in Nigeria saying that it would amount to self sabotage.
The call from caution. The call for caution came amid repeated calls from various quarters including Senator Ole who had suggested things that um he had suggested remove taking back licenses and so on and so forth. It will pass.
It's not the first time it will happen.
>> It happens is in fact is there will be more of these things around the world basically because of economic tension.
Um look look at even in the UK when you have the birth of the party like the reform party hidden behind it hidden behind it I is is an agenda for the so-called um uh uh bonafide English people to take back their government. So it's it's a worldwide phenomenon. It has to be handled well. It has to be handled diplomatically because it can't afford for it to blow up. remember that this South African thing is not against Nigerians. It's important that you know that it's, you know, it's against all other Africans and it's simply the fact that the South African indigents think that the non non-indigents are taking their jobs and that could happen anywhere.
We hope it doesn't even happen in Nigeria.
So it's for for governments to step up step up and make good provisions for their people.
>> Mhm. Uh let's let's come to uh we're still in South Africa. By the way, this story is on the Vanga newspaper, page nine. Fanni Kyote confirms redeployment to South Africa. H I I I don't I honestly don't know who advises our president was was originally appointed ambassador and that surprised many of us but I don't want to go into that and of course he he was sent to Germany and he says that Germany did not reject him whether they did or not he's not going to Germany and now he has been redeployed to South Africa where we have we have a very serious situation that demands that demands a lot of tax that demands a lot of diplomacy which I do not think has we are going to this is our country at stake here and we are not going to be nice about it I don't think he has the temperament you know I don't think he has the temperament And I'm surprised he could be put in such a sensitive position.
I wish Nigeria well. I wish Nigeria well. It's not anything against him as a person. People have their own uh you know but I don't think from the experience of what we have seen of him.
I don't I don't think he has the tactle sensitive position like uh h South Africa and his good luck to Nigeria for allowing this happen.
Let's go to the power sector. There's uh an interesting story here. Court convicts ex power minister M over 33.8 billionaire fraud orers arrest.
>> J say you see you see now ex power minister you know there's no power now for he's been convicted for 33.8 billion naira fraud.
This might be one out of many.
This might judge well. A federal high court has convicted man over an arrested 3.8 billion naira of fraud and money laundering case filed by the EFCC. The court also ordered his arrest after he have failed to appear for the legy of judgment. And I'm I'm wondering what do you mean he failed to appear?
Jan, >> we're still looking for silver.
>> And when you when you say you order the arrest of a man who has that held that the prosecution had proved his case beyond unreadable reasonable doubt and found the former ministry guilty minister guilty on 12 counts.
I I think that we're still playing lip service to the not just corruption to the issue of of these people who invade our treasury and cut away so much who they want and not don't no longer want to dip their hands in the cookie jar.
They want to grab the cookie jar and run and run away with it. So you get and until we are ready to have what I will call decisive punishment in some countries is the death penalty. Until maybe we should go apply charia and cut do cross amputation cut left arm and left leg and right leg until we are able to do things like this these kind of stories will happen.
He he he he look at that he found that he made a cash payment of $655,000 for a property in Abuja without rooting the transaction through a financial institution.
then go change the money for black market sh and this >> I I I want to I'm >> wait sir let me let me just put this question across I want to I want to go back to >> um the president Jonathan's um situation >> and the permutation that you explained Um and I've heard assassions from people that you know somebody is pushing him out. So but before now there was that um there had been that talk before now because he had paid some visits to some people including um former military president general Ibrahim Babanga. He had paid some visits to him at that time. He didn't come out plainly to say that he was going to run but we could see moves. we could see moves. But um my question is what if nobody um is behind this? What if truly he independently on his own wants to come back >> with the way >> would that be such a bad thing >> with the way he was ousted he lost an election >> so it won't it's there so there won't be anything new >> but there wouldn't be any strong desire I am sure that Jonathan himself as a human being is glad about the opportunity God gave him >> maybe he's looking at it that well I I told you people I warned you people now you're here. Okay, let me come back and fix things.
>> Look, given what his wife even said, I'm sure that President Jonathan, if if to be honest with you, it appeared that he found the presidency too hot to handle. What are we talking about? He didn't put up any stelling performance.
The reason why we give him this honor is the way he quietly vacated the seat.
Yeah, but I'm asking would it be a bad thing for him to say, "Okay, you know what? I'm going to run."
>> No, it's not a bad thing. Anybody can run now.
>> Hey, because I'll be your campaign manager. We'll do a good job.
>> You know, it's not. But so talking seriously, I don't even think that Jonathan himself believes that he put up a stelling performance.
I'm sure at the very at the very least he would be saying to himself, "Oh, I could have done this and I could have done that."
There could be >> if there was no OB in the picture, >> Jonathan wouldn't be relevant.
Jonathan, see Jonathan is the issue of Jonathan is caught within the web of the northerners trying to shop for somebody for a southerner who would spend just one term.
>> Yeah. But they they fix the bill.
>> The Southerner that is there right now only has one term left.
>> Ah they don't want to deal with ah >> they don't want to deal with anymore. Ah >> there are many people there are many people who who who don't see their lives going another four years with this gentleman in Dado. Oh there are many many people who don't see rightly or wrongly they don't see their lives. Let me be very blunt. I can't take four more years of what I'm suffering now unless the man himself decides to change and I can see visible change in what he's doing. I can't take four more years of this.
So there are many there are many people like that.
>> So in other words, you know, people would rather Jonathan I mean these people yeah not people now these people that we don't know would rather Jonathan comes back and >> they don't even mind if Jonathan comes and collapses it. is all about power.
>> Politicians should not be followed for God's sake.
>> We have to go.
>> They should not beh >> sorry.
>> Sorry. Sorry. Sorry. Legos.
>> Every day is day one. They want for you to give 100 100 on the tracks, on the road, at work. Cuz it's your job to give your all.
