[00:00:00]Davy Crockett's grandparents are buried in one of the prettiest Appalachian cemeteries I've seen. David and Elizabeth Crockett were born in the 1700s.

[00:00:09]Their home stood close by here near present-day Rogersville, Tennessee. When this region was still a contested frontier land.

[00:00:18]Long before Tennessee existed, this area was the homeland of indigenous tribes.

[00:00:23]Tensions between settlers moving into the region and native communities often turned violent.

[00:00:29]The conflict that led to the deaths of the Crocketts involved Cherokee war leader Dragging Canoe, who resisted settlement on native land.

[00:00:38]It's strange to stand here now with quiet roads and rolling hills and imagine this place during such a turbulent period of Appalachian history.

[00:00:47]Joseph Rogers and his wife Mary are also buried here.

[00:00:51]Her family had been in the colonies for a few generations and he was born in Northern Ireland.

[00:00:57]He immigrated to America in 1781 and he founded the village of Rogersville in 1786.

[00:01:04]A Cherokee man, Richard Brown, who died at the nearby tavern is also said to be buried here in an unmarked grave.

[00:01:12]There's also a 10-year-old girl named Rachel, a 1-year-old boy named Charles, and a 10-month-old baby named Thomas.
