Cinereous Vulture: The Giant Who Fell on His First Flight | Wildlife Rescue Story

[00:00:26]This is Sombra, a senerious vulture, among the largest birds in Europe.

[00:00:42]Hatched high in a cork oak in Cabaneras, his wings span nearly 3 m.

[00:00:59]Built for the open air above these hills, he has spent 4 months in the nest and has never once been there.

[00:01:22]First flight is not a leap into freedom for a bird this heavy. It is  a calculation. Wind distance.

[00:01:38]The gap between one branch and  the next. Sombra got it wrong.

[00:01:45]A wing tip caught the canopy.  The branches turned him.

[00:01:54]And a body built for the sky  came down through the leaves onto the wet ground.

[00:04:58]Recovery for a bird like this  is not measured in appetite. It is measured in the wings. For days  they stay folded, drying slow. Then an extension full both sides  held against the enclosure air.

[00:05:30]Later, a short hop to a higher  perch. Clumsy but chosen.

[00:05:38]And one morning, a single beat. Then two.

[00:07:07]A few clumsy strides across the rock, the ground pulling the way it pulled before, and then the wind takes the  weight the earth was holding.

[00:07:36]It was its first attempt. Some animals are born  ready. Others grow into a body too large for the ground and fall once before the sky will hold  them. Every rescue ends where the wild begins.
