India faces dramatic weather contrastsAdded:
Well, the Indian Meteorological Department has warned a widespread unstable weather across the country with heavy rainfall expected in parts of Northeast India and some Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. Here's the report.
India is currently witnessing extreme contrast from severe heat waves gripping northern and central regions to thunderstorms, rain, and even hailstorms bringing temporary relief in others.
In Delhi NCR, heavy rain, thunderstorms, and hailstorms swept across parts of the region offering relief from scorching heat and bringing temperatures down significantly on Thursday.
Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 25.4°C with a maximum expected to hover around 36°.
At the same time, severe heat wave conditions persist across many northern and central states with temperatures hovering at dangerous levels.
Meanwhile, northeastern states and parts of eastern India are experiencing heavy to very heavy rainfall.
Rain activity is also likely over Gangetic West Bengal, Kerala, South interior Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
Thunderstorms accompanied by hail are possible in interior Karnataka and Jharkhand. Several regions, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Kerala, and Karnataka may witness thunderstorms with lightning.
Hot and humid conditions are expected to continue across coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Tamil Nadu.
Thunderstorms are also expected on May 1 across eastern, central, and southern India. While West Rajasthan is likely to face intensified heat wave conditions.
In Rajasthan, parts of the state witnessed light rain and gusty winds bringing slight relief from the heat.
Weather Department attributes these changes to an active western disturbance and easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal which are likely to trigger more thunderstorms and light rain over the next few days.
In southern India, the Met Department has issued a heat and humidity warning for coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
Temperatures are expected to remain above normal with Tiruchirappalli recording highs of 105°F.
Despite the heat, light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms are likely in parts of the region.
According to the IMD, the current weather pattern is being driven by a complex system of atmospheric conditions including a western disturbance over North Pakistan and adjoining Kashmir.
A fresh western disturbance is also expected to impact the western Himalayan region from May 2 possibly bringing further changes in weather across North India. With extreme heat on one side and storms on the other, authorities continue to advise caution as India navigates these rapidly shifting weather conditions.
