Stop Buying an AC — This $15 Ice Cooler Hits -25°C in 2026!
Added:You clicked because you are hot right now. Maybe the fan is just pushing warm air around the room. Maybe the bill came and you felt sick. And maybe you are staring at a $15 cooler thinking, "There is no way that beats a real air conditioner." I thought the same thing.
But I built one that dropped a sealed box of air down to 25° below 0 C. And it runs off a battery the size of a lunchbox. I built it on my own workbench with parts from the hardware store and I watched the thermometer fall until uh I did not believe my own eyes. Stay with me cuz the best build is the last one.
And it comes straight out of a desert record more than 2,000 years old that people forgot on purpose. And before you think this only helps somebody with a house, no. I built every one of these in a rented room and in the back of a van.
You can too. Let me take you back to the night that started all of this. It was August, deep in the flat part of the country where the air just sits on you after dark. I was in a little upstairs room with one window that faced west.
So, it soaked up sun all afternoon and gave it back all night. The power had been flickering for 2 days from everybody running their units at once. I had a box fan pointed straight at my face, and I was still lying on top of the sheets in a puddle.
Around 2:00 in the morning, I gave up, walked to the gas station, and stood in the beer cooler just to feel my skin stop burning. That was the night I decided I would figure this out or lose my mind trying. So, the first thing I did was a thing everybody does. I put a bowl of ice in front of the fan. And I want to be honest with you, because I promised myself I would never sell you a warm breeze and call it cold. That trick barely works. I measured it. The air coming off a bowl of ice and a fan dropped about two degrees Fahrenheit by the time it reached the bed and it was gone in 40 minutes.
All I did was make a wet floor and a puddle of disappointment. Here is why it fails. And this is the part nobody tells you. Loose ice in a bowl has almost no surface touching the air and the fan blows right past it. The cold just spills onto the floor because cold air sinks. You are cooling your ankles and the dust bunnies, not you. So, I stopped fighting it and I built a real cold engine instead. This is the first build, and it costs about $15 if you have to buy everything and close to nothing if you are a saver like me. You take a hard cooler, the cheap foam and plastic kind, the size you would bring to a cookout.
You cut one hole in the lid for a small fan to push air down inside. and you cut one hole in the side near the top and push a length of plastic elbow pipe through it so the cold air has somewhere to shoot out. That is the whole shell, a cooler, a little fan, and one pipe. Now, the fan, I do not use uh a big loud box fan for this. I use a tiny 12vt computer style fan, the kind that pulls about 3 watts. 3 watts. Your phone charger pulls more than that. I ran mine off a small battery pack and it went all night and barely moved the needle. That is the number that changed everything for me because it meant cold air with no wall outlet and no fear of the meter spinning. You fill the cooler with ice, seal the lid, turn on the fan, and warm air from the room gets forced down over the ice, drops its heat into the ice, and the cold, heavy air pours out the side pipe right where you want it, at your bed, at your chair, at your face.
Because it is sealed, the cold does not spill on the floor and vanish. It comes out the pipe like a cold little river you can aim. I put a thermometer right at the mouth of that pipe. Room was 88° F that evening. The air coming out of the pipe held steady between 42 and 48° F for the better part of 3 hours off a single load of ice. That is not a warm breeze. That is opening the refrigerator door air aimed straight at your skin all night for 3 watts. But 3 hours bugged me because a heatwave does not stop at 3 hours and neither does a hot night. And uh that is exactly where I discovered the thing that gave this video its title. So let me show you. If you want every build in this video laid out step by step with the exact materials, the measurements, and the variations I tested, but did not have time to show here, I wrote it all down in a book called Stay Cool, also published as Cold Engineered and Cold by Design, and it is linked in the description for $67. It is the uh manual I wish I had the uh night I was standing in that gas station beer cooler at 2:00 in the morning. And it covers everything from the basic $15 cooler up through the salt brine builds and the ancient desert system with nothing left out. Now, a warning because I got this wrong the first time and I do not want you to. That salty brine is corrosive and it is genuinely cold enough to bite your skin. You never let that mix pour into your fan or blow salt mist into your room. So, here is how you use it safely. You put the salt and ice brine in a sealed inner container, a jug or a heavy sealed bag or a metal can, and you set that inside the cooler. The fan blows over the outside of that freezing container, not into the brine.
The air gets brutally cold, the salt stays trapped, and nothing corrods, and nothing sprays. I ran this version, and the pipe air came out in the low30s Fahrenheit and stayed cold nearly twice as long as plain ice because that super cold brine has so much more cold stored in it before it gives up. The problem with plain ice is simple. Water ice can only be so cold. It sits right at 32° F, 0 C, while it melts, and once it turns to water, it is basically done cooling you. So, I started reading about how people made things cold before they could buy a freezer. And I found something that felt like a cheat code.
Salt. When you mix plain rock salt into ice, something strange happens that a lot of people never learned. The salt forces the ice to melt, but melting eats energy, and it pulls that energy right out of the mix as heat. So, instead of sitting politely at 32°, the whole slushy brine plunges far colder. This is not a theory I dreamed up in a hot room.
This is the same freezing point trick that old hand crank ice cream makers used for over a hundred years, and it is written up in basic chemistry as freezing point depression. Ordinary rock salt and ice will crash down to about -6° F. That is already colder than your home freezer. I did it on my bench with a bag of ice and a box of the cheap salt they throw on icy driveways in winter. I stuck a probe in the slush and watched it fall past 30, past 20, past 0, and settle around 0 to -5° F. My kitchen thermometer, the cheap one, just blinked because it thought something was wrong.
Nothing was wrong.
I had made a puddle colder than a deep freeze with two things that together cost less than a sandwich. Now, here is where the title number comes from, and I want to be square with you about it. If you swap the driveway salt for calcium chloride, the stronger stuff sold as a heavier ice melter, the brine goes even lower down toward -25°, which is around -13° F. I ran that test in a sealed insulated box with the probe breeding in Celsius and I watched it hit 25 below zero and hold 25 below in a $15 cooler on my own workbench. I sat there and laughed out loud because for years I had believed you needed a compressor and a power bill to get cold like that. So now I had cold air all night for pennies of electricity. And I started to wonder why nobody ever showed me this. Why?
Every summer of my life, the only answer offered to me was buy a bigger unit, run it longer, pay more. Somebody somewhere makes money every single month that you believe cold air has to come from an expensive machine bolted to your house.
And I will tell you exactly who, but not yet. Because there is a build coming that made me angrier than anything. And I want you to see it first. Because here is the flaw in everything I just showed you. It all depends on ice. And ice depends on a working freezer, which depends on the grid. When the power goes out in a heat wave, and that is exactly when heat kills people, your freezer is dead, and your ice is a memory in about a day. So, I forced myself to solve a harder problem. How do I get cold with no ice, no freezer, and no grid at all?
And the answer turned out to be older than the light bulb. Now, if you are sitting there thinking, "This is all fine for somebody with a garage in a house they own, but you rent or you live in a van or a tent or one small room where you cannot cut a hole in anything and cannot spare an outlet. I need you to lean in right now because this next part I built specifically for you. I built it in a room where I was not allowed to put a nail in the wall and it needs no installation, no permission, and either a trickle of power or none at all. It works on evaporation. And once you understand the trick, you will feel it everywhere. Step out of a pool on a breezy day and you shiver even though the sun is out. That chill is water leaving your skin and stealing heat as it goes. Evaporation is nature's air conditioner and it costs nothing. And it has been cooling human beings since long before anybody paid an electric bill.
Here is the renter version, the simplest one. You take a cloth, a bath towel, or a bed sheet, and you soak it and ring it so it is damp, not dripping. You hang it in the open window where the evening air moves through or right in front of that same tiny 3W fan. The moving air pulls the water out of the cloth, and every drop that leaves carries heat with it.
So, the air that reaches you comes through cooler and softer. In dry heat, this is stunning. I measured a drop of 8 to 12° F across a damp sheet in a dry evening. No machine, no ice, nothing to install, nothing anybody can tell me to take down. But a wet sheet dries out and drips and needs babysitting. So, let me give you the version I actually sleep next to. You take a small container of water and a strip of thick felt or a piece of a cotton mop head and you let one end sit in the water while the other end hangs in front of the fan. The cloth drinks the water up like a wick and stays evenly damp on its own for hours.
The fan pushes room air through the wet wick and out comes cool, moving air with zero ice and about 3 watts of power. I ran this off the same little battery pack in the back of the van in the dry country out west. And I went from sweating on top of my sleeping bag to pulling it over me by midnight. There is one honest limit, and I will never hide it from you. Evaporative cooling loves dry air and struggles in soggy humid air because if the air is already full of water, it cannot drink much more. So, if you live somewhere sticky, this is your daytime and dry spell tool and the ice cooler build is your heavy hitter. If you live somewhere dry, evaporation alone can carry your whole night for free. Knowing which one to reach for is the difference between a gimmick and a system, and now you know both. And here is the thing that started to make my blood boil while I was testing all this in a rented room with a damp mop and a battery. None of this is new. None of it is secret science. People kept themselves alive through blistering summers with exactly these ideas for thousands of years, long before a single company existed to sell them cold air by the month. [sighs] Somewhere along the way, that knowledge got quietly shoved in a drawer because there is no monthly payment in a wet cloth and a breeze. You cannot meter the wind. So, the wind got left out of the story and every year you get sold the machine instead. Which brings me to the last build, the one I saved for you. And I promise you have never had anyone show you this the way I am about to. I found it chasing a question. Before refrigerators, before ice trucks, how did people in the hottest deserts on Earth keep water cold and even keep food from spoiling in temperatures that would drop you flat? And uh the trail led me to the deserts of the Middle East and to records going back more than 2,000 years, to structures the Persians built called by a name that means ice pit.
They made ice in the desert. uh in the desert. They cooled water below freezing under a burning sky using nothing but shade, night air, and evaporation. And the knowledge of how they did it survived in dusty engineering writing while the rest of us forgot it ever happened. Now, you and I are not going to build a giant desert structure this weekend. But the beating heart of that ancient system is one simple thing. You can build on a table for a few dollars.
And in the 1990s, a teacher in Nigeria named Muhammad Ba Abba took that same ancient heart and used it to save food for the poorest farmers alive. And it worked so well he won a major prize for it. That is not a legend. That is a documented, dated, awarded revival of a buried idea. And here is how you make it tonight. You get two clay flower pots.
The plain unglazed terracotta kind, one smaller than the other. So, the small one fits inside the big one with a gap of an inch or two all the way around.
You plug the drainage hole in the bottom of each with a cork or a plug of clay.
You pour a layer of ordinary sand into the bottom of the big pot. Set the small pot down inside on top of it. And then you fill that whole gap between the two pots with more sand, packing it all the way up. Then you slowly pour water into the sand all the way around until the sand is soaked through but not flooded.
You cover the top with a wet cloth. That is the entire machine. Two pots, sand, water, a rag, not one watt of power.
Nothing plugged into anything. Here is the beautiful part. The physics the desert knew. That water in the sand slowly seeps through the porous clay wall of the outer pot to the outside surface. And there in the dry moving air, it evaporates. And exactly like the sweat leaving your skin, every drop that evaporates off that clay drags heat out of the inner pot with it. The inside of that small pot drops far below the room around it and stays there as long as the sand is damp. The documented results on these are cool interior sitting many degrees below the outside air. Cold enough that vegetables that rotted in 2 or 3 days in the open stayed fresh for 2 and 3 weeks. That was the whole miracle for those farmers. And it is sitting in your reach for the price of two flower pots. I built one and set it on the window sill in the dry heat and put a thermometer inside the inner pot.
Outside air was 95° F. inside that little clay chamber. It fell into the high50s and held there hour after hour as long as I kept the sand wet and the air kept moving across it. High50s inside, 95 outside, no electricity, no ice, no grid, no permission, nothing to install, nothing that can break. I keep drinking water and fruit in mine now.
And on the worst nights, I have pressed my wrists against the cool clay just to feel my pulse slow down. And that is the whole hidden story in one object. The idea existed thousands of years ago in the desert. It got buried under a century of machines you plug in and pay for. One teacher in Nigeria dug it back up and proved it still works with two pots and a bag of sand. And now it is in your hands tonight. And no company on earth can send you a bill for the wind moving across wet clay. So, let me put the whole system together for you the way I actually run it now. Because these builds are not rivals. They are a team.
On a normal hot night and dry air, the wicking wet cloth fan and the two-part cooler carry me for free with a trickle of battery or none at all. When it gets truly brutal, I load the sealed cooler with ice and aim that cold river right at the bed for 3 watts. And when I need it, savage cold. Cold enough to knock a small room down fast or keep something from spoiling in a blackout. I drop in the sealed salt and ice brine and let it fall toward 25 below. Layer them by how hot it is and what you have. And you are never again at the mercy of a machine or a meter or a grid that fails you at the exact moment you need it most. I want you to feel what I felt on my bench the night the probe read 25 below in a $15 box. It was not really about the number.
It was the feeling of taking something back. For years, I believed being cool was a thing I had to rent every single month from somebody else. And that if the money ran out or the power went down, I just had to suffer.
That belief was a lie. And I built the proof with my own two hands out of pots and salt and a wet rag. You are the kind of person who refuses to be helpless when the bill lands or the grid goes dark. So that when the heat comes and everybody around you is panicking or paying, you just quietly walk over to a cooler you built or a couple of clay pots on the sill and you stay cool for pennies while you sleep.
