Metal detecting at ancient Chorazin, a biblical town near the Sea of Galilee where Jesus performed miracles, revealed artifacts spanning over 2,100 years, including a Hasmonean coin from approximately 2,100 years ago, a bronze bracelet, ancient nails, and mysterious terraces, demonstrating how systematic archaeological exploration can uncover hidden historical evidence about ancient Jewish habitation and daily life in this region.

We Metal Detected the Town Jesus Condemned… and Found This本站添加:
That's a good signal, you guys.
What's that?
Show me.
That's ancient.
What is it?
Straight ahead.
Does that look like a skull?
Yeah.
Whoa.
Ooh.
You see it's decorated?
Oh, my God.
It's heavy.
Yo.
What?
Here's a coin.
Here's a coin.
Is it a coin?
Here's a coin This video is going to be quite different from anything else we've done on this channel before.
We're going to take you on a raw experience of metal detecting at the site of Chorazin.
This is an ancient town sitting by the Lake of Galilee, and not very far from Capernaum.
This town is mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 11, where Jesus performed miracles, but the people did not believe.
We've been here before with Dr. Cohen-Tavor as he and his team uncovered archeological evidence of 1st-century ruins.
But today, we're coming back here with a very rare opportunity to use metal detectors to find ancient coins and other artifacts.
And what we're going to find here is going to be spectacular and ancient, possibly over 2,100 years old.
But that's not all, as we've noticed a mysterious area just outside of the National Park's territory, an area that seems to have ancient artifacts at the top of the hill.
So we set out on an expedition, and what we're going to find there might surprise you.
Wild boar.
Careful, careful, careful.
Yep, wild boar.
A big disclaimer.
It is totally illegal to metal detect for antiquities in Israel without an archeological license, which happily Dr. Cohen-Tavor holds for this site, and he has the legal permission to do this.
So under his supervision and the generosity of the National Parks Authority, we're able to come and metal detect here today.
Hey guys, we're here with Dr. Ahiakoin Tabor, Jose, and- Sergio and Rhoda.
We're right here in Korazim.
This is so exciting.
We were metal detecting in the site.
This is a first century village starting from first century.
It goes all the way to- 11th century... 11th century, and that's what we're finding here, some of the coins.
And you actually found a coin from- We have got coins from the first century maybe, and a coin from the late Ottoman, like 200 years old, so 2,200 years old.
Wow, that is so cool.
And it is so exciting.
Can't believe we're here to metal detect.
This is beyond- it's like, it's like a dream come true Actually, I don't know if you noticed, but I came prepared this time.
You see?
I have knee pads.
Both knee pads.
So you expect to find a lot of stuff, do you?
If not for the metal detector, finding coins is very hard because coins, when they come out of the dirt, they're very dirty.
Mm-hmm.
I mean, you can easily miss them.
Mm-hmm.
Archeologists a century ago, they missed so much- Mm... because they didn't see it.
But when today we've got- Yeah... a metal detector and you scan it- Mm all the time you find more metal.
I mean, it's, like, using your eyes for this is not responsible anymore.
Mm-hmm.
While we are all busy metal detecting, we want to show you something very peculiar Apparently, the ancient city of Chorazin is much larger than we originally thought Right across the road from the national park, there are ancient ruins covering an immense area.
So we came here on another day with Jose, Steven, and Mike to try and explore this place, and what we're going to find is absolutely mind-blowing.
And that's the one we walked to get here.
For Razim.
Razim, yeah.
Right there across the road.
Oh.
Whoa.
That's definitely been carved out.
Yep.
Our goal is to get to the very top of the mountain and see what's that mysterious structure that can be seen all the way from the bottom of the road.
However, before we get there, we're going to explore and see if we can find any other significant ruins and at the same time continue metal detecting.
So in order to find everything, we need to properly scan.
So why don't we, like, scan from side to side?
Okay.
So why don't you take this side and I'll take this side?
Okay.
And you just, like, sweep swoop from side to side- Okay... and see who gets the first coin.
Well, what's my- It's like a competition.
What's my- It's on.
It's on.
It's on.
What's my, uh, line here?
Three feet across, all the way down.
Okay?
Okay.
I've got a four.
Ooh.
This is, this is a good number here.
Wow.
You wanna go for it?
Yeah.
What's your number here?
Yeah, 37.
That's, that's supposed to be a good number.
46. Okay.
Let's go for it.
Okay.
So remember, you pile everything to one side.
Yeah.
And let's see what's, if it moved.
And I just, I see it Oh.
That's a piece of bronze, isn't it?
Copper?
Yeah, I see the copper, the green.
Yeah.
So that was a piece of, like, a box or- Awesome.
Well, how, how old could this be?
So the level here is a millennia or 1,200 years.
Wow.
Well, that's a good start.
So yeah, that's a- Yeah... that's a great beginning.
Millennia.
So I got this, but who's got, will have the first coin?
I'm gonna start from here.
No, no, no, no, no.
Oh.
You should do it on the correct way.
Oh, don't skip it.
It's not the way to get stuff.
You have to be patient.
You have to be persistent.
Uh-oh There's something here.
Yeah.
What do you have?
Number.
77. So that's this line.
So it's right here.
And I have a towel in my pocket.
Okay.
You have a towel in your pocket.
Oh, cool.
Oh, and this, like, feels like I'm on clouds.
Last time it was brutal.
Okay.
I think we're... Ah.
Oh, it's right here.
Careful.
Whoops.
I- Oh, here you go.
Here you go.
Here you go.
So I'll just keep it here.
Careful your finger, your ring.
Oh, don't gl- Okay.
Uh-huh.
Oh, I... Whoa.
What do we have?
Square nail.
Oh.
Ah.
That's old.
Yeah, that's an ancient nail.
Whoa.
Yeah.
And you see it's been in use 'cause it's bented.
Yeah.
It was, like, in a furniture.
This size would be a furniture size square, uh, nail.
Again- Is that-... about 10,000, 1,200 years old.
Okay, you keep it.
And in the end, we see who got what.
We'll see.
All right.
Who has more treasure at the end.
So this is exciting, but what we're really looking for, like, more of a Bobby Dazzler.
Yeah.
This is interesting, but we need a Bobby Dazzler.
Not a Bobby Dazzler.
It's not a Bobby Dazzler.
Has to shine.
Has to shine.
While editing this video, Dr. Achia Kointovour delivered to us very exciting news.
Just a few miles away from here, at the shores of the Sea of Galilee, sits the El-Araj excavation site, and the team is getting ready for another three digging sessions this year.
This has been one of the most exciting sites in recent years in Galilee, as it is believed to be the true biblical Bethsaida, the hometown of Apostle Peter.
Led by Dr. Aviam and Dr. Natley, the team is opening up registrations for volunteers once again.
This means you too can come and join the archaeological dig for two weeks, but it's going to be hot and it's going to be a lot of hard work.
But if that's something that you've been wanting to do, then we highly recommend this awesome site and an awesome team.
But just to clarify, this video is not sponsored.
We just wanted to pass this opportunity down to you.
So if you're interested, go to EmmausJourneys.com/2026BethsaidaJuliusExcavation where you can find more information on the dates and prices.

While we are still metal detecting, we return back to the hill across the road to inspect the mysterious ruins that are yet to be excavated.
Giant boulders.
While some stones might look random here, others certainly appear to show ancient human habitation.
So this is, like, perfectly, like, set there.
Straight ahead, does that look like a skull?
It does.
Doesn't it?
Like a jaw- Yeah... a nose, a head.
I think the skull is right here, right?
I think it's down around the corner.
It looked like from, from- yeah, it looked like it from a distance though.
Yeah.
This just doesn't look natural.
90-degree angles.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Bones.
When we asked Dr. Cohen-Tavor what all this could be, he said he believes this would be an extension to the very Chorazin village where we are metal detecting.
Check this out.
That is huge.
But it has not yet been excavated.
Just imagine how much more is still hidden here.
I've got a good number here.
Not a nice number, but a decent number.
Right there?
Right here.
We need to dig.
I've got a suggestion.
Yeah?
It's this one.
That's a big one Give me a good number right here And I think- You can check that file.
Want to try?
Mm-hmm.
I think I saw something.
There, I see, I think... Yeah, here you go.
Ooh.
Wow.
Wow.
Here's a coin.
Here's a coin.
Is it a coin?
Here's a coin.
It's very thin.
It's, here's a coin.
It has a hole.
Like a t- why does it have a hole?
Was it like a pendant?
Yeah.
So that should be like Muslim coin.
Here you go.
Wow.
See that?
It's a star.
So how old would this one be?
This w- could be between, like, 100, 200, 300 years old.
Okay.
So it's not very old.
But it gives us some knowledge about the people that lived here- Yeah... in the ruins of the ancient village.
Wow.
Well, I guess I got the first coin.
Well, that's a- You got the first coin.
Well, that's Achia's spot that you found.
It's true.
So we have to attribute it to Achia.
You have to actually detect it to call it to your first coin.
But I dug it.
You can hire my digging services.
Well, that's not a bauble dazzler, but it's, we're hitting up.
It's a good start.
It's a good start.
I like it.
I like any coin because all the people lived here.
Yeah.
Even if they lived in the ruins 200 years ago- Yeah... or lived there 2,000 years ago, they're all part of the heritage- Yeah... of this site, of this land.
As we keep going farther and higher, we keep noticing an interesting structure that at first looked like a car.
I'm on top of one of the mountains by the Sea of Galilee, but what's on top of the hill shocked us.
There is a monumental stone that from afar looked like a burnt-up car, but when we got up here, what we discovered is crazy.
It is a giant boulder on top of a grave.
From further examination, this appears to be a dolmen structure, an ancient burial site.
A similar dolmen structure had been found and excavated just a few miles away and dated to the middle Bronze Age, which is about 2000 BC. What this looks like is probably somebody really, really big or famous that was buried here, but it appears like the tomb had been looted.
There is an opening, and it's empty inside.
Oh, what was that?
Whoa.
Whoa.
That's a bracelet.
Ooh.
You see it's decorated?
Man, what?
Bronze.
That's- That's, look at it.
It's heavy.
Wow.
That is very heavy.
Let me see it, honey.
I, I, I'm, I'm on the run here.
You are.
I'm totally ahead of you here.
Whoa.
This is one piece of a bracelet.
So which, how old would this one be?
This is typical, like the pottery we have here, 1,200 years, something like that.
Okay.
Can you imagine somebody wore this bracelet, like a millennia ago?
Maybe it was an anniversary gift.
Mm. Or a birthday gift.
You see the decoration?
So cool.
Wow.
Something right here.
Try to lift that stone.
Yeah, it's still there.
We've been metal detecting for almost an hour.
Keeps moving.
And it's hard to keep track of time, as every time we get a hit, we're excited to pull something ancient out of the ground, and hope that one of these times it's going to be something big.
What is it?
Actually, I'm not sure.
Uh, ancient nail could be.
It's an a- yeah, it's an ancient nail again.
Yeah, yeah.
It's square.
Definitely.
Like, maybe also an hook.
Oh, could be.
Or something.
Bag it or no?
So, like... Yeah, yeah, definitely bag it.
All right.
Like a hook for hanging stuff.
Yeah.
Or piece of, uh, agricultural- Yeah... uh, tool.
All right.
Another nail.
Bag it.
As we were ready to go back down, something kept dragging us to keep going forward.
Look down and you will see it's not a slope.
It's a plateau, down, plateau, down, plateau, down.
It's almost like terrace, terrace, terrace.
Oh, yeah.
I see one, two, three, four, five.
Satellite imagery reveals something stunning.
The terraces and the ruins can be clearly seen, and the size of this potentially ancient village is enormous.
Yeah.
He says it looks like almost areas that would have been made flat to build a house.
Oh.
To build something.
To build something.
Could be cattle, could be a house, could be vegetables.
I don't know.
There's one here.
Yeah.
It's almost like step, step, step, step.
I can count four flat ones right after the other.
Yeah.
Terraces.
Two perfect holes, and they're all over the place.
These round chiseled holes in these rocks are quite mysterious, so we've asked Dr. Cohen-Tavor what they could be, and he could only speculate.
So these are called cut marks, which is basically a description of what they are.
Uh, you can find them by villages and even in, uh, agricultural fields.
Maybe some shepherd want to grind his wheat to make a pool or something like that, or maybe to collect some water, or maybe both.
You know, it could be multi-useful.
Sometimes when you have high concentrations of these, it might be, uh, from the Chalcolithic period, like, uh, 4th millennium BC. But I don't know specifically about this, but it's probably multipurpose installation.
No it's something big.
So I think it could be a can Basically trash.
I think so.
It's so high up So let's write that down Ahia?
Yeah.
Uh, could I get your, uh, opinion?
'Cause I don't wanna destroy anything.
There is something very big, 90, not metal.
I know it's top layers, maybe not too old, but I start getting stuff like this and I have no idea what this is.
Okay.
This is plaster from the wall, so obviously this is probably ruined wall.
So you're asking whether you can dig a bit- Yeah... lower?
It's... There's something right here.
I... Jared, you know, it's something big.
You want a big pick?
Yeah.
I don't wanna destroy it, though.
Oh, that's a really big pick.
Sergio?
Yeah?
Oh.
What about this?
Uh-oh.
Put it on again from the other side.
Oh.
Yeah, precisely.
And then squeeze, uh, other way.
Up, up, up, now, now.
Oh.
You won't repeat that mistake again.
Oh, I see.
It's just soil You want it deep?
The thing is you have to shove it in the ground- Uh-huh... and then pull it so it breaks.
Okay.
You've got a garden now, so you have to practice.
Yeah.
Ooh.
I don't think it's that deep, 'cause my thing wouldn't have detected it that deep.
I think we're just in the wrong angle- Oh, it's a big thing Ooh.
That- I knew it.
Oh man, I knew it A tube of toothpaste or something.
It's a toothpaste.
An ancient toothpaste.
Ancient toothpaste.
Iron.
Well, what is it?
Can I dig it?
It's gonna be a nail.
You can dig it if you want.
Do you want?
You got it out.
There it is.
See the nail?
Yeah, that's it.
It's not... Is it a nail?
No, it's not.
I'll bag it.
It's something square.
There's more?
That's a good signal, you guys.
All right, go, go, go.
Throw it away.
What do you have?
A square nail or something, and, uh, got it out, but at the same spot there was something else.
Yeah, it's that one.
Yeah.
All right, now just keep it there.
No.
You got it.
Uh, just go by hand.
There it is.
What's that?
A bracket?
You have?
Looks like a modern piece of bracket.
A thing.
Show me.
No, that's ancient.
What is it?
It's a... It used to have these decorations, you see?
Used to be a hole here before it broke.
Yeah.
So like on furniture- Yeah... that you'd have decoration that you apply on.
I mean, a modern bronze wouldn't be rusted as this one.
I see.
Yeah, there is.
What number?
Hold on.
80. 80 is good.
Iron?
82. No, that's very good number.
Wow.
Still there.
Oh.
Oh, it's in the pile.
Yeah.
Finally.
We got it out.
You found it.
What do you have?
A glorious nail.
Wow.
That looks old.
It is old.
Older than me.
We've been looking for artifacts at the very top layer of the soil.
Oh, ferrous.
Just imagine what is lying deeper beneath.
Another nail Or better yet, what is still hidden across the road at the top of the hill?
When we started this climb, we had no idea how far the village extends and how many ancient artifacts we were going to discover up here.
Wow.
Looks like a wall.
It snakes around down that way.
That is insane.
What is this place?
We always thought Chorazim is a small little place down there on the hill, but you go uphill and there was something monumental up here with a gigantic wall going all the way around.
And again, this could be modern.
This could be 100 years old.
Um, we've gotta check the surveys.
This is truly remarkable, but we feel the need to give you this big warning.
Please do not come here.
It's actually a pretty unsafe place.
Besides the unstable rocks, there are a lot of wild boars living here, and we got to experience them firsthand.
Wild boar.
Careful, careful, careful.
Wild boar.
There they go.
They're running.
They're running.
Running.
Yeah, I see them.
Look at them.
Yeah.
Woo-hoo-hoo.
Wild boar.
Wow.
The boars take cover in the shade between the rocks, and they blend in so well we couldn't see them at first.
And at one point, we got so close to them, just a few feet away, and this can get quite dangerous.
And boar again.
Man, where was he?
Somewhere here.
Oh, my goodness.
Hey, hey, hey.
Loud noises.
Hey, boar.
Boo, boo.
There were reported incidents of wild boars attacking people in the area.
They have razor-sharp tusks that we wouldn't want to come close to.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Okay, I think we're safe This place is quite incredible, and there is so much more that can be found here.
We can't wait until the archaeologists expand their search beyond the borders of the park and open new excavation squares up on this mountain You have anything?
Maybe in the file?
No?
Does it work on mine?
Yep.
Yep.
Oh yeah, 64.
It's good?
Non-ferrous.
Very good.
No?
Nope.
Nope.
Nope.
No.
Yeah, 64.
Very clear.
Non-ferrous, 64.
Na, na, na-na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na.
Oh, it's a coin.
Wow.
Oh my goodness.
Wow, that's a little one.
That is so cool.
That is awesome.
A lot of sweat, a lot dust, but finally a coin.
So what type of coin is this one?
Um, I really, really, really suspect that this is Hasmonean coin.
Oh.
Wow.
This is not supposed to be here.
How could it be so old?
If I'm right by the shape of it- But how could it be so high?
I know people been living a thousand years later in this house- Mm-hmm... after the Hasmoneans.
Mm-hmm.
But when you build your house and you renovate and you move dirt from here to there, there's pottery and coins or whatever people- Mm forgot and left behind.
And so you can see this, it's, it's not really oval, right?
Yeah.
And it's very thin, and it's not like, um, round.
It's more like a bit domed.
Yeah.
So that's really look like Hasmonean or maybe 1st century coin.
Wow.
Wow, that is so cool.
Wow.
2, 2, 0. Shaya versus S and our team.
Gotta get going.
I, I was on, I was on his team.
No, no, no, guys.
First, what, uh, she's on my team.
So archeology is not like competition and it's not like s- your work.
Right.
It's a teamwork.
I mean, it's not like I excavate.
I need people with me.
I, I'm running the excavation, but- That's right... so we are a team here, so it's all ours.
That's- And it's all our heritage.
It's not like- Yes... my coin.
Yeah.
No, no, not at all.
There, you can hold this.
I'm running.
But we won, really.
It's not a competition, guys.
Don't worry.
So it, is it worthwhile?
Yes.
All the work?
Yes.
Absolutely.
All the dust.
This looks like dirty, but still I would estimate a Hasmonean coin, 2,100 years old.
It's a very early habitation, Jewish habitation in Korazim.
Wow.
And the first Jews that they ever came here.
Wow.
That's unbelievable.
Well, that was, uh, pretty awesome.
Uh, once again, some really exciting finds.
Two coins.
Dr. Coin Tavor here has two.
We have zero.
But it's not, it's not a competition.
It's not a competition.
Actually, you have zero.
Oh.
And we have two.
Okay.
Because it was like teams.
Teams.
So you, Achian, Jose got two coins.
You got left out.
I was too focused on the competition, honestly.
Yeah, that's why.
So now I see what you mean.
It's, it's tough job.
It's not easy.
Last time we actually got lucky that first one, and then last one just cool finds.
Oh.
And here I can see that it actually takes time and a lot of effort- Yeah... and patience.
Yeah, yeah.
It's a tedious work, but it's worthwhile eventually.
Yeah.
It is.
It is totally worthwhile.
It's super exciting.
I can't wait to maybe some come next season or something.
You guys are gonna keep going lower here and lower?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
There's, there's lots to dig here.
We just started breaking ground in this, uh, area, and really hope for more groups to come and join here and find more coins, and find more pottery or generally- That's awesome... people's life.
So how low will this level go, like all this dirt?
So looking in the next room, and I see the floor level there, which was excavated.
So we've got an about three or four feet to go here.
Uh, we'll see.
Probably we were just on the surface, but we'll have walls, we'll have jars, and lots of surprises also.
So probably when you get to the lower area, it's gonna be more older stuff.
Yeah.
More coins?
More coins, definitely.
Oh, that's so cool.
Well, thank you guys so much for watching.
We really hope you enjoy this episode, uh, like we've enjoyed digging this.
And until next time, may God bless you.
And like always- The best- The best is yet to come... is yet to come.
Amen.
Bye, guys.
