A rare instance of local media elevating public discourse by grounding a routine forecast in actual atmospheric physics. It successfully transforms a standard weather warning into a brief, intellectually satisfying lesson in thermodynamics.

Hot and humid weather ahead of another stormy stretch
Added:Well, Mother Nature cranking up the temperatures. The humidity was already there. Now, temperatures are feeling very summer-like across the area. Bright sunshine, skies are sunny at this hour and temperatures closing in on 90 here in Springfield. Breezy southwest winds.
Look at those dew points in the low 70s.
That's why it feels so muggy out there.
Now, we started the show with a look at Sparta, a confirmed tornado there. And And this is preliminary, but the final report hasn't been sent out yet today, but it looks like there is at least one, maybe two other tornadoes that were confirmed out of surveys that continue across parts of the Ozarks. The other tornado that looks like was confirmed was west of Ava, southwest of Arden, an EF1. And then also northeast of Arden, a touchdown point there. Don't know if that's one tornado track or if that's two separate tornadoes, but the bottom line is there was a handful of tornadoes that came out of Sunday afternoon and evening storms. Thankfully, things have grown quiet. We see this morning's wave of showers exiting off to the east. It's now in Kentucky. Looking west, we see another round of thunderstorms brewing here in western Kansas, but there's a big hurdle for those storms to get through if they were to come in our area. We've got a storm-stopping cap building in across the area right now, and it's going to be with us through tonight, tomorrow, tomorrow night into Thursday. And that is going to make it very tough for wet weather to occur. Not impossible, but tough for wet weather to occur. Looking at severe weather chances because of that cap, we're going to be finding those severe weather chances remaining off to our north and our west.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, a cold front is moving into that cap. That will break it, and that's why we're looking at a threat of thunderstorms, possibly severe, from Kansas into Iowa. I think we keep that risk of storms primarily north of our area through tomorrow night. Thursday's a different story.
Looks like late in the afternoon that cold front will be pressing in from the northwest, again breaking the cap and leading to at least a broken line of thunderstorms developing on the cold front that will push southeast across the area during the evening and overnight hours. I don't expect storms to develop on that front until after 3:00. This looks like a setup mainly for wind and isolated large hail.
And it looks like again those storms will spread southeast, probably weakening with time as we push into the evening hours and those storms push further south across south central Missouri and into northern Arkansas. Looking at our by our for tonight, again expecting clear quiet conditions. For tomorrow expecting mostly sunny skies for the bulk of the day. There is going to be probably a wave of clouds that comes through around midday. Can't rule out an isolated shower with that and then that moves out and then we're back to mostly sunny conditions. Tomorrow night looks quiet in our area. There will be some thunderstorm chances to the north, but I think for most of our area we're looking at dry conditions and then we get to Thursday and there's that line starting to show up along the cold front. That's 5:00 and that will press southeast of the area during the evening and overnight hours. Temperatures tonight dropping into the low 70s, so another warm muggy night with temperatures tomorrow looking very much like today's in the upper 80s to around 90Β°. That will come with heat indices in the mid to upper 90s again on Thursday. It looks like a high of about 90 before that cold front arrives with that chance for storms. We'll get a break from wet weather on Friday and it looks like another unsettled weekend. I'm really eyeballing that Saturday night into Sunday morning time frame for the possibility of heavy rainfall and maybe even a few severe storms, Jesse.
