And some of them disappeared from the ledgers without explanation, listed simply as departed with no date, no destination, no further notation. And some of them, on a Thursday night in late winter, walked out the back door with their coins sewn into their robes and did not look back.

[00:40:25]They depicted the pleasure districts and the theater and the famous landscapes and the beautiful women of the highest social tiers. They documented the city's life with remarkable specificity and beauty. They did not depict the geijo.

The part that was too ordinary, too daily, too much like the background condition of everything else to be worth representing separately. The official whose administrative decisions shaped policy lived in a house where the floors were swept by hands that did not belong to the official.
