July Garden Tour Part 2 | The Secret Garden & Greenhouse

[00:00:00]Hi everybody. Welcome back. My name's Nicholas. I garden in central Ohio, zone 6B. And today we're going to do part two of my July garden tour. And we're going to focus on the back patio and the greenhouse and the secret garden today.

[00:00:18]This is actually probably uh more beautiful, I think, than the front garden. the front my front garden is a work in progress. The long border is the prettiest part I think and and but it's coming together. But the back garden I think has just it's it's been around longer. I've been working on it longer and I just feel like it's kind of come together uh better. I guess that's what I'm trying to say. So, we're going to do the back patio first and then head back to the greenhouse. And I'm excited to show you guys the greenhouse specifically, but the back patio looks really good.

[00:01:03]Um, so we're going to go over there and start from the beginning and go everywhere. This is a truthful view of how my garden looks all the time.

[00:01:16]There are very pretty parts and then there are parts that look like they need some work.

[00:01:22]All of these stocks on my hostas need cut down. And I think once I do that, things will start looking a little bit better. But it's a little bit It's a little bit wild right now.

[00:01:36]But I mean, it's still pretty. It just I need to spend some time. There's a tree growing there.

[00:01:45]Yeah, it just it's coming along, but it's coming along slowly. This bed right here, we worked on it.

[00:01:54]I don't even know, a month or so ago. We added some hydrangeas that um Spring Meadow Nursery, which is the home of Proven Winners Color Choice Shrubs, they sent me. They I need to water them, but they're doing well.

[00:02:11]And I don't know if you guys remember when we did this video, but I pulled out all the weeds out of this bed and they're back with a vengeance.

[00:02:23]I did want to say though, when I come back from vacation, that's uh I'm going to be on vacation for the next week. When I come back, I think I'm gonna try really, really hard, hopefully with mom's help, to focus on mulching the flower beds. I think that that's been needing to be done. I just haven't had the time trying to prepare, you know, to be gone. Anyway, there's a lot of work, but I think that once we get things mulched, it's going to look so so much better. I did glance over and I meant to talk about this crab apple right here. This is a I believe it's like a profusion crab apple.

[00:03:10]It's very pretty. I love it and it's doing really well. There actually used to be a huge maple here almost in the same spot, but the stump got ground down and it was like 40 50 feet. like it was a big big tree and it got taken out um cuz it was leaning. Anyway, um yeah. So, any I don't know where I was going with that. Just so you guys know, this bed is in need of a redo like stat. It looks pretty in passing. There are a lot of hostas, but this bed actually could do full sun if I wanted it to. Um, yeah, it just needs it needs some work.

[00:04:02]I usually walk by this and look at it with the side of my eye and it looks beautiful. I usually don't stare at it.

[00:04:08]I had well and I still do this anemone right here that spreads so much and I pulled it out. There was three clumps of it that just spread everywhere. Pulled it out this year and it's back which I expected it to. I'm just going to have to keep on top of it.

[00:04:30]Um and then finally it'll go away sometime. And then you guys know how like grocery stores sell gift hydrangeas [music] around Mother's Day.

[00:04:46]Very loud plane, but [music] they sell gift hydrangeas and usually people give them to their mom for Mother's Day and then they'll bloom and then people throw them away normally.

[00:04:57][music] These are gift hydrangeas that I got one year from I think Aldi and they bloom. I mean, they don't bloom like crazy, but they they bloom.

[00:05:09]And there's another one back there, it has two blooms on it.

[00:05:14]Yeah, that hydrangeanger back there, the panacle, that is called white wedding.

[00:05:20]And I really like the look of that one.

[00:05:22]And then next to it, I have two macroofila hydrangeas that do very poorly. I want to take those two out and put if I can find two more white weddings. I would love to do two more right there. I think that that would be very pretty. Over here, just don't look at the weeds. But this was the start of the hedge of zenyas that I did. And these ones are doing okay.

[00:05:54]But when we go around to the front of this bed, the variety that I did over here is looking fantastic.

[00:06:04]These ones right here. Um there's one called Zahara Starite Rose.

[00:06:12]I believe that's the white one. And then the pink one right here is Zahara Raspberry Ripple. I think these ones are doing lovely. Um, and I will start these again next year from seed cuz I really like them. My pretty Betsy Jupiter's beard, it looks so good for months and then it gets to this point in the year and it looks rough. I think I'm gonna cut it back and yeah, see what happens because I just It's looking very yellow and brown right now.

[00:06:55]Um where here's a butterfly bush that I have no idea what it is. I didn't plant it there. It got brought in on the wind or by a bird or something. It's not placed right because obviously it's going to get large. But I kind of wanted to see what it is, you know, to decide if I want to transplant it somewhere else in the garden or if I just want to get rid of it. Um, yeah, but it's about to bloom. So, I think it'll be nice to see what it finally does. This is my spiral arborita that is not even a spiral anymore. I keep saying I'm going to prune it and I need to, but I hopefully I can find where it spirals.

[00:07:46]It'll be fine. We'll figure it out. Uh, this bed has some more zenyas that I started from seed. This is the uh, Profusion apricot. This is probably my favorite one that I started. I just, you guys know how I love that color.

[00:08:03]And this butterfly bush back here, which is shrouded by a lot of stuff. I really like it's like um coconut something. It I'll put it on the screen cuz I can't quite remember the name of it, but I really like it because it's like a off white. It's really nice looking. And then this is my flamethrower red bud.

[00:08:26]It's It's I like it. I think it's pretty, but it is more like a shrub right now. Mom thinks that I should cut some of the bottom branches off, and maybe I should, but I don't know. I'm kind of like living with it.

[00:08:46]It's I mean, it's it's beautiful. I guess I wish that it was a tree so that I could plant under it, but it also looks really pretty how it is. So, I don't know. I probably won't do anything with it right now. I'll probably let it um let it go for this year.

[00:09:15]See what happens. I mean, there are some branches that are actually touching the ground and I should probably get rid of those just cuz I don't want disease to spread to the rest of the tree. Um, but as we come up onto this back patio, I have some peppers growing in these pots. Um, some bell peppers. My strawberries have done really bad this year, and I actually think that I'm going to get rid of them.

[00:09:51]I think that I would prefer to look at something pretty here.

[00:09:57]Yeah, I just I think that that's going to be a better route to go, especially visually. And then I have a tomato plant here. I just took two ripe tomatoes off of here. And there's some more starting.

[00:10:13]This is a really cool plant I started in the greenhouse. This is bampen verbina.

[00:10:20]I really like how it like the look of it. It's really interesting.

[00:10:25]Um, if we turn slightly, this furniture is so nice. This came from Cambridge Casual.

[00:10:37]And I love how wide they are. They're just they're so comfortable to sit in.

[00:10:44]Um, I just I love them. Behind me is another beautiful bed. The statement tree is a phantom hydrangeanger standard.

[00:11:00]These they're not full um size yet, but these panacles when they get big are like larger than my head, which is large cuz it's I have a large head. But I have some Japanese forest grass or hakana cloa down here. Some hookeras, some sedum, some anemone.

[00:11:24]Here is a butterfly bush that was supposed to stay only 12 by 12 in x 12 in, but obviously that it lied. There's some serendipity aliums over there, which I need to get more of those cuz those are pretty. This is a very comfortable spot in my back patio.

[00:11:49]It's very I don't know. It's It's very cozy. I have a bunch of plants.

[00:11:56]Um some Namisha right here. This is the I think malberry. Smells really really good. Um Cascadius Fantasy Hot Pink Patunia.

[00:12:09]Uh, new look dusty miller. Some of my house plants that I bring out in the summer. Look at that thing. That's wild.

[00:12:18]That thing is so tall. This is a Kufia honey bells, I think is what it's called. The hummingbirds absolutely love that plant. One of my Eugenia topiaries that needs pruned. Um, and then all back here are my house plants. I I took them out from my studio downstairs and I put them back here and they're doing so well. I don't know if you guys have ever done this. My mom does it now, too, cuz I um told her how much luck I had last year, but when summer hits, I take all of my house plants and I bring them outside and they really love it in my area. I think they think it's like a summer vacation for them, so they just like go crazy. But this one in particular is so pretty.

[00:13:09]Look at that.

[00:13:11]This is a a ficus I think called cling on or cling on over the edge. It's going to need potted up soon, but I just think that it's really pretty.

[00:13:23]The shape of it in that structured square or rectangle planter. Um, some more over here actually is all the rest of my house plants. I have a whole stand of them, but everything is well, not everything. This is a kalen koey that's I think not loving the change, but it'll it'll it'll be fine. It just needs some time to acclimate and I need to spend some more time cleaning it up and it's starting to bloom which is good.

[00:14:02]Um over here this well not everything. I mean I need to prune some leaves off of the bird's nest fern. My pickle cactus is loves it when it's outside. the Norfolk pine. It had some brown leaves when it was downstairs, but it came out of that.

[00:14:25]This is a um string of hearts. Look how pretty that is. And it's like I don't know 3 ft long at least. Here's my other Eugenia topiary. This is a two ball topiary. I'll try to find a picture um to show you guys what it looked like when I brought it out of the greenhouse this spring. It was almost completely defoliated and look at it now.

[00:14:52]It's I love this thing. But again, this needs pruned up and tightened up into the two balls that it's meant to be. Um, but now we get to go to the long border and make our way back to the greenhouse.

[00:15:05]The back long border has come a long way, a really long way. And it's kind of almost full, which is wild to think about. When I started this longboarder last fall with the help of my mom and my uncle Mike, it it's a total of 260 feet long and I would say 10 roughly 10ish feet wide and it obviously was a great a vast expanse of nothing. Just mulched flower beds. I think there's a rabbit in here. I keep hearing something. Anyway, I kept saying, "Oh, I'm going to have so much space to plant. It's going to take me years to fill up." It took me less than a year to fill up almost the front and back long border. But we have a zebra grass. We have more quickfire fab hydrangeas. We have a standby me lavender clatus. It's kind of out of like in between blooms right now, but you can see all the buds. I absolutely love this plant. It's so pretty when it's blooming because it has these like downturn petals. All of the lambs ear that I transplanted, I took it from two lambs ear plants to 16. So that's looking great. I still have the wire closes over the holly hawks because as I just said, I heard a rabbit back there. They've been mowing my holly hawks down every day.

[00:16:36]Um, this beautiful nine bark right here. I can't wait till it gets big and beautiful. That's the uh summer wine rosé, I believe.

[00:16:48]And then all of these are white swan marolds.

[00:16:55]And they looked great for a long time. And then I noticed that birds are like devouring them. Like these two finches.

[00:17:09]I watch them every day. I'm guessing it's a couple. They literally sit on top of these and like eat like this, flinging seeds everywhere. It's fine. I mean, they need food. So, here's some helotrope that I started in my greenhouse. This is oldfashioned and this is marine. So, you can see the difference there.

[00:17:30]We have a bunch of gum fina.

[00:17:33]Uh I think everything is the Las Vegas.

[00:17:38]That's a lie. This purple one is like the tra traditional gumfrina. And then all the other ones, the white and the pink are the Las Vegas variety.

[00:17:49]I have this is like a strawberry sundae or something hydrangeanger.

[00:17:58]Um, what is this? A river birch.

[00:18:05]This is a pinky winky hydrangeanger.

[00:18:09]And then this is also supposed to be a pinky winky hydrangeanger. But look at this. It's so weird.

[00:18:18]This is a pinky winky bloom right here.

[00:18:21]How it's open.

[00:18:24]This is not I don't know if this is some sort of accidental cross and it's like two different ones.

[00:18:35]I'm not sure. But I mean it's fine. It does. I don't need to like it can be what it is. It I'm not that pressed about it, but it's not the it's not a complete and total pinky winky. That's for sure. I have another ninebuck back here which is so beautiful. I need more of those in my garden.

[00:18:54]They give you color. And that thing was so pretty when it bloomed this year. It had like these octopus like tentacles of like mauve colored blooms. It was so pretty. This is another one of the uh strawberry sundaes or I can't remember.

[00:19:14]I I can't remember you guys. I have 60 plus hydrangeas in my garden. So it it's a little bit hard to keep them in keeping keep track of them sometimes.

[00:19:28]I have a thumbia here. Um it's again kind of out of bloom, but this is the coconut appeal. I think I love that little ivory color. And I used one of my like tomato cage things for the trellis. I think that's pretty.

[00:19:49]Uh, this is another one of the Bobos that I took from out front the front porch and I brought it back here. It's looking great. This plant is really cool. I started this in my winter sewing jugs. Um, this is pink spires. I think verbina. It's a perennial and I just think it's really cool how it has like these long blooms and then like a little tuft on the top. I just think it's really interesting. And then, oh look, these are starting to bloom. But I went to Michigan to visit Corey with UPN North Garden in May, I believe, when I was there. I did a video and then he did a couple videos.

[00:20:37]And for one of his videos, he had me pick out two containers and then he had me pick out the plants to go in those containers. and we potted them up. And then as a surprise to me, he sent them home with me. And this is these are the two containers. There's one here and one down there. This is the Terascape Pink Ribbons Kolus. It may be the prettiest colus I think I've ever seen in my life.

[00:21:06]I absolutely love it. So that's this plant. And then there's Surefire Rose bagonas in here. I mean, look at that.

[00:21:16]That's Oh, look. There's Oh, landed on me. And then there in this one there is a loilia, but it died out of the other one. There's some creeping jenny. And then I just realized in the other pot there's actually a diamond frost euphoria in there, too. That was probably a little bit too much. And then on the back side there's a the proven winners variety is called um Pegasus, but this particular one was called a griffin beonia. And there it's filling in the backside looking absolutely beautiful.

[00:21:56]I love these things. I have probably I don't know 10 of these in my garden this year. And that's a plant that I think that I will always put in my garden. I love foliage plants and the Pegasus or Griffin beonia gets massive like shrub size like 3x3 in my garden and I just love them. This is myricolor beach.

[00:22:29]When I found this at the garden center, I actually called mom straight away because I had been looking for one of these for a while. And um I just think it's beautiful. The foliage, the color variegation is I think like perfection to me. pink, like a sagey green, and then there's a little bit of a kind of like cream in it. I just love it. And I'm super encouraged to know that it's putting on growth. So, that means that it likes this area.

[00:23:10]This area gets I would say it's part part sun in this area and it seems to do well. I was afraid the only other place that I had to put it was a full sun location and I just felt like that would be too much sun for it. So, I decided to put it back here and it's doing really well.

[00:23:31]As we continue on, we have another one of the pots. And this plant, this plant wilts every single day, but as soon as I give it some water, it's fine. But this is that variegated Joe pieeed that I just planted called I think pink frost.

[00:23:47]Um I think it just needs to settle in to its location and then once it does it'll be fine. Usually I feel like when I plant something it takes about 2 weeks for it to get acclimated and then at that point it doesn't need daily watering. It can can kind of like handle itself down this way.

[00:24:12]We have a bunch of stuff I started from seed. Some helopsis here. Some helotrope. Some colus. This is the champagne St. John's wart.

[00:24:24]Love this thing. It died back to the ground this winter and I had to cut it cut it down and then it that's all this year's growth which is so pretty. This is an anemone um that's supposed to get really large. This is that other um double file opening day viburnum like I showed you out front in last video. So I mean that thing is yeah it we're going to need to clear some space when this thing finally starts to put on some size. This is an Aronia uh lowcape snow mound. Maybe that was a guess. Not sure if that's true.

[00:25:10]Here is a mugo pine. And let me tell you what, I am so surprised that this thing does as well as it does back here because this ground back here in the spring and early summer is pretty much saturated with water all the time and it never dries out and it finally or I mean it it seems to be doing well. And then last either July or August, Corey with UPN North Garden came to my house and we planted up some containers. And this is the plant that was in those containers and I took them out and put them in the ground.

[00:25:50]It's a loilia or I think or a cardinal flower I think. I can't remember the actual variety name, but I really like this is like a red that I can get behind because it's not red. It's more like a fuchsia, but it could be considered red.

[00:26:04]That's something that I can do in my garden. And then to cap off the bed, we have this sting arborita that's supposed to get like 20 ft tall and only like a foot and a half wide. So, it's just going to be this pencil that caps this bed off. And I think it's going to be so pretty. We're going to just glance over these four raised beds. We're not going to get close to them because they have dried out a little bit too much over the last couple weeks. But these pretty much have perennials in them and they're doing fine, but they're not doing spectacular. So, we have room for improvement here. But this over here is what I'm really excited to show you guys. The greenhouse is around the greenhouse in the secret garden is mulched, new bark nuggets laid, and we put some new edging down. And the edging was a collaboration with a company called Edgrite. Again, I don't know if you've seen that video yet, if it's come out. It we're kind of a little bit out of timeline order right now, but I knew that I couldn't do a garden tour without showing this to you. So, it might be a sneak peek for you guys. I don't know. I don't. It might be. But look at this.

[00:27:27]It looks so crisp and clean and it's absolutely beautiful.

[00:27:36]It's so peaceful to me.

[00:27:39]I love I just I don't know. I just think that this part of my garden is it's my pride and joy. It's like my baby.

[00:27:51]But these containers right here are the earn containers that I got from Oakland Nursery. And I they were white, like a rusty white, and I repainted them black.

[00:28:01]Put the rockin blue suede shoes salvia in here because the hummingbirds absolutely adore this plant. So, they're always back here by the greenhouse.

[00:28:11]There's some sedum in here, some lemon coral, there's a um kolus in here, and then there's also some pink cloud super tunias, even though they're, you know, getting taken over, but what what little bit is peeking out looks really pretty.

[00:28:30]And then over here in the gravel area are my vegetables. I have tomatoes and cucumbers. I think that's it. just growing six tomato plants and this is my best year for tomatoes ever. Like this tomato right here is absolutely massive.

[00:28:50]I've never had a tomato this big before and I'm not even joking. My tomatoes never do this well.

[00:28:57]Like it's just doing fantastic.

[00:29:02]And they're everywhere. Like I have so many tomatoes.

[00:29:10]Mom's grabbing a snack apparently.

[00:29:13]And then look at these. Oh, I think this branch is going to need either tied up or cut cut down, but I'll do that in a second.

[00:29:23]Look at this.

[00:29:26]That thing is so big. It's getting wedged in the um trellis or the cage.

[00:29:36]I'm so so proud of my tomatoes this year.

[00:29:44]Over here I have some artichokes, blackberry.

[00:29:49]The birds completely picked that thing clean, so it is what it is. My cucumbers are doing they're actually doing they're bouncing back and I I think I've gotten some cucumbers off of them.

[00:30:03]So, I guess that's good. This is just a regular like bush cucumber. And then this is the suyo long cucumber. Look at this thing.

[00:30:21]Massive. Absolutely massive.

[00:30:24]Um, well, now I want to grab a snack.

[00:30:28]This is the Sun Sugar cherry tomato. If you guys have never tried this, give it a try because they're sweet, like a dessert. And I'm not even joking, they're delicious.

[00:30:39]If we turn a little bit, I have some slender Haninoi fall cyprus trees in these two boxes that are in front of my um tall raised beds. And these things do so well. I actually think that these two are doing better than the one that I have in the ground, which is exciting. I have some tiara pink superunius here, some dusty miller and some uh sweet potato vines.

[00:31:12]And then I still have my sunflowers, my miniature sunflowers under the bird netting just cuz I want them to grow as much as possible.

[00:31:22]My pumpkins are doing fantastic. Let me go under here so you can see what's going on.

[00:31:30]My plan, I did this last year, so to any naysayers, I did this last year, but the vines grow up and over the trellis and then the pumpkins end up hanging down and it's doable. Some of these tomato pumpkins, not tomatoes, are small size like this, like maybe a pound, maybe two. There are a couple varieties that can get I think 8 to 10 lbs. And on those there's the possibility that I might have to give them support when they hang. So I could put like a netting underneath or I could use some rubber coated wire. Um but it's doable and it is very pretty um when they when they do their thing. But I feel like it was just this past week that these pumpkins really started to climb up. And I've been having to kind of lash them to the uh trellis. Like I'll need to do this one as well.

[00:32:39]But you know what I mean? They're like more than halfway up there now. So I'm excited about that. Over here are my lizanths.

[00:32:50]All flopped over, but it doesn't really matter. This is the Voyage 2 blue.

[00:32:58]And then this is the Voyage 2 yellow.

[00:33:02]And then I had one other one, but it's kind of out of bloom. It was the Pacino Choco one, but it's like a pinky mauve color, but it's kind of done. But I think that my favorite one is the blue one.

[00:33:16]just because it's like I don't know a color that you don't really see a lot in flowers. It's purple, but it's like a blue purple. And then let's look at my favorite planter I think I've ever planted before. We planted this in a recent video.

[00:33:38]I got this terracotta pot at Oakland Nursery on sale and I added a grass, the Carly rose and wild rose hooker and then an Armisia silver mound I think. Um, and it's just beautiful next to this rickety old bench. It's like the perfect look. It's It's the perfect look. But let's go to the entrance, the other entrance of the secret garden, so we can take a walk through this peaceful place. The secret garden is probably my favorite spot in my whole garden. It's peaceful, a bunch of shade plants, which are my favorite.

[00:34:30]It's just um there's a lot of structure now with the pathways. It has everything that I need in a garden and I can't wait for you guys to see it. We have bark nugget pathways and black mulch flower beds. And then we have the edging that is um court and steel and it's it gets this rusty patina on it which is perfect for my garden.

[00:34:59]And it's just a beautiful space. And then you also have the sound of the fountain that mom and I installed last year.

[00:35:12]We have more Cambridge casual furniture over here, which makes it so peaceful.

[00:35:20]If only the bugs would stop bothering us, then you might be able to relax back here. But yeah, we added these northern sea oats grasses this year and I think that that was such a smart move because it I don't know, it just looks wild and free and like something you might actually see in the wild near a stream or something.

[00:35:50]It's so pretty. And we also added these like wood grain raised beds from Vego Garden. They sent these these to me and we did a collaboration video on these. And what I wanted to show with these is that raised beds are not just for vegetable production. You can also make something really pretty out of them. And especially in the shade, you just focus on foliage color or foliage and color and texture and you just it creates a beautiful view and a especially a beautiful backdrop to the seating area which it's so relaxing and I love it. We expanded this so now it's a even bigger opening here. Um, but it's it's beautiful. Now, there is one part of this secret garden that I think I would like to do a lot of updates on, and it's the sunny part of the secret garden or sunnier part of the secret garden. I just think there's a lot of room for improvement back here in this area.

[00:37:11]But I mean, I can't really complain.

[00:37:13]It's so peaceful back here, and it's so beautiful.

[00:37:17]I love everything about it. I did add some color in this one. I added these Sfire Rose bagonas. I wish that I had had enough and put them over there. Um, but it's just beautiful. And there are some annuals in these containers, but mostly they're perennials. Ferns, hostas.

[00:37:39]Yeah. And I just think um I think it's it's gorgeous. These ones, these ferns, I believe they're supposed to get like 60 inches tall. So, it's going to be a super statement piece when those things get to their full size. I'm excited to see how that looks. And this takes us back out to the other entrance slashexit of the secret garden. Back to my favorite container I've ever done, which is kind of funny cuz it it's simp. It's simple, but it's it's it's my absolute favorite.

[00:38:20]I love it. I'm so happy that I finally got to share my full garden with you guys. is I've been keeping this area a secret. I haven't been able to show you the full view of it. I've been only able to show you like close-ups.

[00:38:37]And I'm just excited that you guys get to see it all again. All last year, every video pretty much I would start from this view u start each video from this view. And I haven't been able to do that the last couple months because it's, you know, the secret project. But now we're all um open and honest with each other and there I have nothing to hide anymore and I'm I just I don't know. I just am happy that I get to share this spot with you again. Also, this is like my favorite place to do like a project.

[00:39:13]I like setting up a table and planting stuff in pots. So, it's nice to be able to have this area used again. Words are so hard these days. I'll tell you what. But I want to thank you guys so much for watching this video. I can't tell you how much it means to me that you are invested in my garden. It makes me um push harder. I think not that I'm trying to impress people, but I just I'm I just want to inspire.
