How To Launch DTC Brands Using an Affiliate Army | TikTok Shop 101
Added:How do you take one of the most iconic brands, a generational household name, and reimagine it in a playful way that allows users to engage and interact with Barbie herself IRL for the very first time? I'm Steve Rad, we help brands and creators design and scale direct-to-consumer products, including mass market distribution. It's free for you and it helps me convince my wife that all of this was a good idea. Our friends at Holo Toys wanted to bring Barbie to life, and Mattel was going to grant them the license to do so. Our job was to take that vision and transform it into something that actually works in the real world. And more importantly, something that can sell at the retail level, not just as a toy, but as a movement, an experience unlike anything that's ever been on the market. Step one, we got to nail down the design experience. Before anyone picks up the box, they need to have an emotional connection, which is why in retail the packaging is the single most important piece. Just like a thumbnail is to a YouTube video or poster is to a movie, a retail package can make or break a product because nobody will ever get to experience the hard work that you've put into that box unless they're drawn to it. And thus, every single angle, every photo, every headline, every color that we chose, every piece of artwork has one job: convince someone walking past the store shelf to stop. We spent months designing how this product should look, how it should feel, how the play pattern should work, how the consumer, more importantly the child, should digest and fall in love with this item in just a matter of seconds. And so thus, after months of collaboration between both external and internal teams, the Barbie Magic Style Studio was born. A magnetic fashion activity set that allows kids to mix [music] and match hundreds of outfit combinations before seeing Barbie herself come alive and model those outfits in their very own space >> [music] >> in augmented reality.
>> That is one of the coolest things I have ever seen.
>> She's literally dancing on the carpet.
>> Next, we had to build an entire world around it. Launching a toy today isn't just about making a great product. You have to build an entire universe around it. And so our teams created retail presentations, marketing assets, trade show displays, product photography, digital content, storytelling collateral that both retailers and influencers would eventually use to promote the product. We even flew to Italy to shoot a commercial at Diaframma, the legendary studios behind some of the biggest toy commercials. And just when we were ready to launch the item and bring it to market, we realized we had a problem.
This wasn't just another Barbie toy. We had created an entirely new play pattern, a product that combined physical play and digital interaction in a way that most parents and retailers had never seen before. On a normal day, you finish the packaging, you ship it to retailers, you cross your fingers and hope the consumers figure it out based on the language on the box. But hope isn't a strategy. And so we realized something important. When you invent a new category, people don't just instantly understand it. You have to teach them. You have to show them. You have to let them experience it, to feel it, to connect with it. And at the final hour, that completely changed our approach to launching this product. And instead of following the traditional toy industry playbook, we decided to flip it upside down. Rather than making retail the first place people discovered the Barbie Magic Style Studio, we chose to make TikTok Shop the first destination.
Instead of spending millions and hoping consumers would notice the product on a shelf, we put it directly into the hands of creators. We gave TikTok Shop affiliates the opportunity to be first to market with an exclusive launch.
>> We're about to do a TikTok Shop affiliate summit. Appreciate all of you jumping on this call today. Apparently, it's the most affiliates that have ever signed up on a product before.
>> We're going to have to move to a Zoom link. We have hundreds of people waiting to join on.
>> Let's go Barbie.
>> And suddenly, hundreds of creators weren't just reviewing the product, they were demonstrating it, explaining it, playing with it, showing parents exactly why this toy was different. Every video became a product demo, every creator became an educator, and every live stream became a shopping channel. And the momentum started building immediately. Within hours of launch, the response exceeded every expectation.
Powered by creators, affiliates, and a launch strategy that looked nothing like a traditional toy release. And to me, that signal just reimagined the entire landscape. My friends, the way brands launch products has changed. Consumers don't always discover products on store shelves anymore. They discover them in feeds and live streams, in authentic creator videos, in real-life moments.
And if you're launching something like this where people have never seen before, well, then sometimes the smartest move isn't about sitting around waiting for retail to discover. It's about letting the thousands of creators show people exactly why it matters. And that is exactly what we set out to do on this project. And watching that strategy come to life was almost as rewarding as building the product itself. We can't wait to see how the Barbie Magic Style Studio performs this holiday season and with the help of our affiliate army, we stand unified on a mission to inspire and entertain like never before. I'm Steve Rad. Holler at your boy.
