Bronzini proves that true mastery lies in elevating the mundane, turning simple poultry into a sophisticated masterclass on light and form. It is a refreshing reminder that in the hands of a veteran, the subject is merely a vessel for pure technique.

Just Chickens
Added:Hi, my name is Marco Bronzin. I'm a graduate of the Royal Academy of Arts in London, England. Today, we're going to be doing a little impressionist painting of some chickens. So, we're going to have great fun.
So, this is our subject for today. Some chickens running around in a beautiful sunlight. Uh, delightful creatures. So, looking forward to painting those.
So, my palette is some French ultramarine, some burnt sienna, some raw sienna, permanent rose, cad red light, um, vidian, cad yellow light, permanent green, a little bit of warm gray, and some titanium white. And I'll be using liquin.
So, I have a a 14 by8 canvas prepared in gray again. And, uh, we're going to be doing uh, this delightful subject, chickens. They're very, very amusing creatures. So I'm really looking forward to that. Uh I have my Windsor Newton brushes here, a size seven, size five.
Um it'll be an impressionist painting.
So nothing very large as far as brushes are concerned. And so let's get going.
It's going to be very direct uh pending again.
So we're going to place the chickens.
You know, there's certain order there.
You don't want to, you know, you don't want polka dots. There's there's a design right there. So, I'm going to place that one just off center here. So, she's going to be right in here somewhere.
Something like that. Another one right in here.
Maybe that one a little further away.
Right there. And there's another one in here. And then those back there. Just placing them roughly, but going to be painted very very direct.
But I'm I'm looking for design already.
I'm looking for some shapes here. This one comes all the way back to there. So, that's pretty good. And there's some back in here. There's a few back there which will replace them eventually there. All right, let's get going. So, I got some burnt sienna, some raw sienna in my palette, and we just start blocking some colors, some permanent rose as well.
very direct just an impression again as number one here let me do this one looking down I chose that photograph because of lovely sunlight on them which will be a really cool thing to do there and then some back in here.
So, for the moment, doesn't look like anything, but I promise you there will be chickens eventually.
There's quite a few gathered back there and then some coming out in here.
There. So, what I'm going to do, I'm going to place the green in there now.
Okay. Okay, let's put some of this gorgeous sunlight coming through there in here onto this field where the chickens are sort of hanging around.
And as I'm doing there, I'm starting to already give you some shapes in here.
Like this one in front is kind of a an important one in here.
I'm using my permanent green, my bidian, my raw sienna, all those beautiful colors, some nice shadows.
Adding a little ultramarine.
I want to deepen some of those values in here.
Wonderful angle as well. The sun coming from this way. So, it's very strong.
Little deeper in here.
We're going to go out of the canvas there. All right. You take a look at this.
Okay. Let's put a bit more colors back there.
Strong light coming from the from the right hand side.
And then pretty intense shadows right in here using my ultramarine.
A little bit of permanent green as well.
All this can be quite dark.
We want a strong contrast between the sunlight is the shadows uh that the chickens are casting onto the field.
going all the way out of the canvas like this.
Block that. And we can come back to that later on.
And then the back the back of the field kind of in the shade as well, which is good because it creates contrast with that sunlight. So that's that's a good thing. And there's some details about that which we don't need to add. I may put a couple of things on that, but we're not interested in that for the moment at least.
There shadow right in here.
some shadows in there. All right, let's go back to the chickens.
Okay, let's go back to the the ones in the foreground. Create some some nice sunlight on them right in here.
And the tail here. This one's a little light back in here as well.
and the ones back there.
So, there's one in here which I like here and one right next to it.
We don't know that observed chickens for hours at a time way back in the days. I find them fascinating.
They're great mothers as well. Highly protective of the their babies, which is amazing.
Nice in here.
That was a long time ago. Used to sit on the chicken run and just watch them, draw them, and eventually they just ignore you. They come right by you, scratching the ground, doing the chicken things.
All right, let's get organized back in a little bit better. Some looking that way, some this way.
Yeah, I'm going to take a slightly solo motor brush now and get into a little bit more finer things.
The one in front as well. This is gorgeous. Very colorful.
Some of them are incredibly colorful.
Beautiful animals there. Right here.
All right, let's put a few more back there. introduce a couple back there. There's one way over here.
So, minding his own business.
This one is actually quite dark right there.
There's a sort of a little gathering here.
Gossiping.
Another one back in here.
So, I'm placing them carefully. As I mentioned earlier, a certain design to them.
Another one back in here.
So before I'm thinking that they are chickens. They're just shapes right now. Just place the shapes where you want them to have them. And in painting especially oil with oil of course nothing is written in stones. You can arrange things, you can move them around, you can do whatever you want.
Uh it's the beauty of oil versus say watercolor which not allowed to make really many mistakes if any.
All right, I think we need to come back onto the grass now and really start cutting in.
All right, as I say, let's go back to the grass in here. That really strong light.
right in here.
It's coming right up from the this side of the canvas.
Now, we're going to start coming in against the the bodies and just start forming them a little bit better.
taking my time.
And as I mentioned in all my videos, do this in your own style, your own time, your own way of playing paint.
Don't feel like you have to copy me.
You should not copy me. In fact, you should do your own version of this if you want. Make your own version there. Now, we're getting somewhere. Um, I'm going to outline this one a little bit better in here.
again. Lots of colors everywhere.
Lots of colors.
All right, let's have a look at this.
Okay, let's go back on the actual chicken side and create start creating a little bit more of a more detail. a while. I want I like detail, but just a few more touches. So, actually look like chickens like this guy in front.
Very colorful. So many colors in there.
All right, back in here.
So, one is quite quite dark back there.
It's back turned to us there. There's even a white one back in here somewhere.
Get some wonderful highlight on it in a minute.
All right, let's uh let's form this one now.
Sorry, I got too much paint on my brush.
lay one stroke at a time.
All right, a few more shadows in here.
Some of those are little narrow in the distance there. There's some in here.
And the one in front is casting quite a lot of got a long shadow right in here and quite dark as well. So I'm putting a little bit of ultramarine in here.
Sort of chicken shaped shadow if you know what I mean.
Then we can go back right against it and create some sunlight.
And then some sal in here like this.
Little correct a little bit. I don't like that color. It's a bit deeper distance without taking over the painting. So just very very quiet like that. And on top of that, we can put a little bit of a cal stroke of highlight in there to show this the end of the field. [snorts] Nothing much going on.
Some nice in here. I need to come back into the chicken in the center now.
Okay, back uh in here to create u some better shapes in there. Then we're going to cut in later on a little bit more.
like this one there. Make sure that shape well established here.
that form right near there.
That's his chicken. And the one in front is the same. Got to establish a little bit better in here.
Like this, right?
again. One more time, we're going to cut in with the green.
Okay, back in the green. Make sure we got some nice some really pretty sunlight coming here.
Cutting around these guys a little bit better.
like to go out of the painting strong like this.
And we can create maybe a little bit of a shadow there in a minute.
Um just to create a little section there.
Yeah.
And with a smaller brush, I'm going to cut in again around some of these this group right in here. Just get it a little bit little bit sharper in there.
It's giving the impression of this the bunch of chickens there without painting individual chicken if you know what I mean.
And then it's all very pretty sort of streaks of light popping in and out like this.
Looks really good.
Little light back in here.
Some sunlight coming through there.
Just giving an impression. That's all that is.
some colors there and there.
All right.
All right. Let's clean up this chicken right in front here. Create a little bit more of a a form right here.
Some sunlight right on top.
these feathers right in here and on its tail right in there.
And the one in front on the left sort of very pretty sort of rusty light on top of him. Top of the rider, sorry. Oh, maybe it is a him there.
Very pretty light.
And then this one in here needs to be formed a little bit better.
Not much work on on this one. So come in a little bit better here.
A little bit darker disappears behind this one. And then same thing, really strong light right in here. working right in there almost like outlined like this. Very pretty there.
Uh that's my white one back in here.
Doing okay.
And let's uh let's put a bit more work on this back in here.
The sunlight is again so pretty. You got to really make sure we capture as much as we can.
Give an impression of this this sunny day in this chicken run there.
All right, let's have a look. Okay, let's return to the some of the shadows again. They're kind of important to place them properly.
This is uh my ultramarine, my permanent green. I also have a little bit of raw sienna in there.
There some streaks back in there.
Nothing specific, but we have to establish as much as we can.
So, we capture this light.
Um, more in here.
And this the foreground of course need to be a little bit more broken up.
Can do things like this in here as well. Just break it up.
to create some more distance between that and that we can cut in here and then really make a big big deal of the sunlight on the back in a second.
Right. Couple more strokes back in here.
Make sure the shadows are well established and all this is dark in here.
All the shade there.
All right, let's put a little bit of highlight on this chicken right in here.
And a little bit on this one in here as well.
A couple of strokes in there as well.
Okay, let's put in these guys on top like that.
And then these guys back in here as well. Just a few little touches there and there. There.
Okay, let's put a little bit more sunlight on him.
there.
Let's put some legs on these guys. Just a little little strokes there and there.
Really nothing much there. But we need to introduce those though.
I want to make those a little bit darker because I want to introduce some light in between there. And this gu is really basically nothing much there at all.
I think we can dispense from there. I think that's good. But I want to come back in between this one here because I want to introduce some strong sunlight behind there and establish his legs like that. Coming right against it like this.
Still need to clean up a little bit around here.
And again, the gray canvas so so helpful. I can't begin to tell you.
Otherwise, again, I'd be blocking all these little white holes there, which has precious to do with painting.
Nothing to do with painting.
So, this this way the painting comes out much faster and we can use the background to our favor.
A little bit more work in here. This is almost done. I don't want to overwork this.
Now, a few strokes in here. I do like the u I do like the sunlight coming in between in here behind this guy right there.
Nice and strong there.
Couple of strokes in there as well.
Again, we can break it up.
Let's make that a little bit deeper in front.
Blue shadow in there. Same thing with this one here.
A little bit darker to show the presence of that bird there. This one is fine.
there.
All right. A few little highlights on the ones in the distance with a small brush. Just just just create that wonderful sunlight on them.
White one is right in here.
Stroke here. little stroke there. And then let's go back to the red.
Just a few strokes of that red. Very very just rough indication of that. We don't want the intense red that we don't want to jump out of the painting.
So just a few strokes like this.
Yeah. And I think I think that's very good. I think that's pretty much done. Little light on his right here.
Yeah, I think that that will do.
Little bit highlight on him.
This one there. All right. I think that will do.
So, uh, again, a loose painting of chickens.
I just do love them. Uh, just a rough idea of an impressionist painting.
Really a loose painting. I hope you enjoyed it. Let me know what you think about it. And thank you for joining me on my channel, Marco Rosen Studio. And uh, don't forget to subscribe. I really appreciate it. I really appreciate it. I thank you and I see you soon.
