Emergency repair on a scag v-ride

[00:00:01]Hi, this is Adam at Small Town Machine Shop.

[00:00:04]And we got a quick little emergency repair video.

[00:00:07]Show you guys I'm going to show you more of the work I do.

[00:00:10]As you see, the sun is drawing nigh in the sky.

[00:00:14]Customer dropped this off, needs this mower tomorrow.

[00:00:17]What happened is what happens a lot with these things. There's a lot of these Scag V-Rides in my area.

[00:00:24]This is going to be uncomfortable.

[00:00:29]Okay.

[00:00:31]See that hole right there?

[00:00:34]Should look like that.

[00:00:38]So, that pipe broke out.

[00:00:41]Sorry for the sun washing it out.

[00:00:44]So, all the guys that I work for have these Scags.

[00:00:49]So, I actually stock these.

[00:00:52]These are these arms.

[00:00:53]Cuz they break all the time.

[00:00:56]So, what I did is cut a piece of pipe real quick.

[00:00:59]Got a bolt in there.

[00:01:01]Here's the pin.

[00:01:03]We'll clean that up, grease it up.

[00:01:06]Clean this guy up real quick. I don't know if I'll be able to film it cuz it's just so tight. I'm going to be laying on the ground. I do have jack stands. And it's blocked in the front and still held a little bit by the chain fall.

[00:01:19]So, we're being safe.

[00:01:22]So, we get this guy up here, put the pin in it.

[00:01:25]Help locate it. There's a little semi-circular notch in the front.

[00:01:30]It just rests up in there.

[00:01:32]And that's still intact.

[00:01:35]So, the pin I've done a lot of these.

[00:01:37]The pin and that notch would do 90% of the locating for us.

[00:01:43]And then you just butt the uh side of this eye right here right there against here.

[00:01:53]And that helps That does most of the locating. That'll get it plenty good enough.

[00:01:58]So, let me get the grinder, clean this stuff up.

[00:02:01]We'll go ahead and clean up the pin, grease it.

[00:02:04]Got a new bolt to hold it in.

[00:02:08]And uh yeah, it should be a quick one, get him back in the field.

[00:02:13]This mower uh every July he brings all his mowers in for a half-season go-through.

[00:02:21]So, we've got some other work that's going to need to be done, but this will get it back in the field, back making money tomorrow.

[00:02:28]So, let's get the grinder and some safety glasses and all that good stuff, and let's get to it.

[00:02:33]Okay. It's got everything cleaned up.

[00:02:37]Got it registered in there really nice.

[00:02:39]Uh took a bunch of measurements.

[00:02:42]Tape measure, you know, different parts of the deck.

[00:02:45]Sitting really good. Left that old weld there. It's helping hold it, so I'm going to weld the back, and then I'll grind that out, weld the front.

[00:02:54]Do some couple passes there just to hold it in its place.

[00:03:00]Cleaned out a ground spot right there cuz the paint was already bad. I'll unhook the battery, but we're close enough.

[00:03:07]To the weld shouldn't be an issue.

[00:03:09]And then we will have to adjust the deck once this everything's sitting and floating. That's what this jam nut's for, so we'll be able to pull this off, spin it, make our adjustments.

[00:03:21]So, let me get the welder, and let's uh knock this part out. Okay. So, we got her fixed.

[00:03:28]Nice and straight.

[00:03:31]I'm going to do some blade changing and stuff while I have it here, so.

[00:03:35]And uh not going to zoom in too closely on this my uh good old Lincoln Electric auto-darkening hood I keep in the shop has gone out. It just it's like flickering like that.

[00:03:50]So, probably time for a replacement. I've had this thing forever.

[00:03:55]It's the only welding helmet I have here at the shop.

[00:03:58]So, I had to do it a little bit uh blind there at the end, but it'll be far, far good enough for this. It's on It's on there solid.

[00:04:07]See, these are pretty common break points on these skegs.

[00:04:11]Again, super quick job to get the customer going.

[00:04:14]It's been here less than an hour.

[00:04:17]So, give him a call, swap get the impact, swap the blades real quick.

[00:04:22]Yeah, one more job done.

[00:04:25]So, like this, I'll keep bringing you along on these little jobs I get and some out in the field.

[00:04:30]It's uh getting to be the first cutting for uh alfalfa and stuff, so I'm sure I'll get some calls.
