Arizona is experiencing severe drought conditions with 62% of the state in severe drought and 89% in moderate drought, combined with extremely low relative humidity (10-20%) and gusty winds up to 45 mph, creating high fire danger; the official monsoon season begins in 18 days, which will bring seasonal pressure reversals and increased moisture, though only slight chances for weak showers are expected in the mountains during mid-week.

July attempts coming up later this weekend, right?
>> Ah, pretty close to what we would expect on that holiday. You know, and on the 4th of July, that's usually when monsoon usually has some nature-made sparks flying, too. We're looking at an above-average season ahead. In the meantime, we're desperately needing the rain. Unfortunately, we're having to put up with the trifecta of trouble.
The landscapes are extra dry, our atmosphere is zapped of moisture, the relative humidity, that's the measure of the moisture in our atmosphere, it's down to 10 to 20% and then on top of that, the additional monkey wrench of these gusty winds that are speeding up out of the southwest, zooming as strong as 45 mph in this chunk of northeastern Arizona. So, we've got to put up with the winds, we've got to put up with the fire danger, but then Friday is the reward. Hang in there, okay? So, here's the wind story tomorrow. It's so bad, it's triggering a wind advisory on top of that red flag warning that's going to cling on tomorrow. So, again, this is really the spot that we're focusing in on for the fiercest conditions that can really create explosive fire growth.
Mentioned the dry fuels, didn't I? Yeah, the landscapes, they're so vulnerable across Arizona right now. We just got the latest drought monitor and actually it did not change at all in comparison to last week's report.
So, just a quick recap, 2% of the state has seen that extreme drought make a comeback. We have severe drought in 62% of the state, 89% is in moderate drought at least, if not in these worst categories. And pretty much all of Arizona has seen some level on the drought monitor chart. So, here's the next thing on my radar. Don't get too excited. It's not much. In the middle of next week, there's going to be just enough moisture to set off some slight chances for showers and thunderstorms.
They'd be really weak, high based, pretty dry, just spitting out a little bit of moisture. Not what we really need, which would be a good soaking right in our deserts and our mountains, but here this slight chance is exclusive to the mountains only and really focusing in on the eastern side of the state. We've got to wait patiently.
We're now down to 18 days until the the 18 days until the official start of monsoon. Okay, that doesn't mean we flip the switch and the storms get cracking, but that's when we kind of enter that season where we start to see that seasonal reversal of pressure and therefore wind, which ushers in that moisture that we love to put to use into those monsoon storms, right? Well, Flagstaff, it's all about the wind for you right now and then a warming trend next week and then that slight chance for storms in the middle of the week.
For the valley, oh boy, let's just focus on Friday, shall we?
88°, but yeah, I know you see it. We're clicking it into summer mode next week.
We'll be right back.
