In Peru, protesters have demonstrated against Keiko Fujimori's presidential candidacy, fearing she will continue her father Alberto Fujimori's authoritarian regime; Alberto ruled Peru with an iron fist from 1990-2000, commanding death squads that massacred civilians before serving a 16-year prison sentence for human rights abuses, and Keiko, who became first lady at age 19, has inherited his right-wing populist movement and is campaigning on cracking down on organized crime.

"Fujimori never again!" Protesters fill streets of Lima ahead of Peru presidential electionsAdded:
There's outrage in the streets of Lima over Keiko Fujimori. The 50-year-old presidential candidate is the daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori.
Protesters fear that if elected, she will continue his authoritarian regime.
>> Fujimorism has already captured and destroyed many democratic institutions.
And that's why in this election, we can either choose to give total power to Keiko Fujimori or open a path to rebuild democracy in our country.
>> We believe that Keiko represents the continuation of a dictatorship that is not only mafia-like and corrupt, but also one that handed over the territory and natural resources to large transnational corporations.
>> Alberto Fujimori, who died in 2024, ruled the country with an iron fist between 1990 and 2000 before serving a 16-year prison sentence for human rights abuses, including commanding death squads that massacred civilians.
At age 19, he appointed Keiko as Peru's first lady, and she later inherited his right-wing populist movement.
This is the fourth time she has stood in a presidential election.
She campaigned on a promise to crack down on organized crime, a hot-button issue in Peru, and came out on top in the first round of voting ahead of the center-left Roberto Sánchez.
The two will face off at the runoff on June 7th against the backdrop of severe political instability.
>> [cheering] >> Peru has had eight presidents since 2016.
Most have been impeached or forced to resign amid allegations of attempted coups, corruption, or human rights violations.
