The Reichstag Fire of February 27, 1933, served as the catalyst for Hitler's systematic dismantling of German democracy; by exploiting the fire as a pretext for the Reichstag Fire Decree, Hitler suspended civil liberties including freedom of speech, assembly, and privacy, enabling the secret police to arrest political opponents without trial and paving the way for the establishment of a total dictatorship.

Reichstag Fire: The Night Democracy BurnedAñadido:
Berlin is burning and democracy is dying with it. On the night of February 27th, 1933, the German Parliament building erupted in flames. The Reichstag was the heart of the Republic. By dawn, it was a hollowed-out shell. The police found a young man named Marinus van der Lubbe at the scene. He was a Dutch communist with a matchstick and a motive. But the fire was exactly what Adolf Hitler needed. He had been chancellor for less than a month. His power was still limited by law. Before the embers were even cold, the propaganda machine started turning.
Hitler claimed the fire was a signal for a bloody communist uprising. He convinced the aging President Hindenburg to sign the Reichstag Fire Decree.
In one night, civil liberties were banished. Freedom of speech, gone. The right to assembly, abolished. Privacy of mail and telegrams, finished. The secret police could now arrest anyone without a trial. They targeted political rivals and silenced the press.
This single suspicious event provided the excuse to dismantle a democracy from the inside out. The fire did not just destroy a building. It cleared the path for a total dictatorship.
