The universe is expanding, meaning the space between galaxies is increasing over time, which can be visualized using a balloon analogy where dots representing galaxies move farther apart as the balloon inflates; however, this expansion does not affect everyday distances on Earth, as demonstrated when a character's odometer readings fluctuate due to instrument error rather than actual cosmic expansion.

Added:[music] I wish we could go to the observatory every day. Oh, me too. They have the most refreshing drinking fountain I've ever drank from. Maybe we can use their giant telescope to locate your home planet.
H. Well, that's interesting.
>> Your brain being eaten by a mutant fungus.
>> Guys, as I was about to say, my odometer, it's indicating a greater distance between the treehouse and the observatory than usual.
>> So, so it's proof that the universe is expanding. At this rate, in 5 years, we'll have to take an airplane to get to the treehouse.
>> Now, boarding flights to Sydney, Dubai, Paris, and the treehouse.
>> Isaac, you're making zero sense. I'm a data guy. Everyone knows it. The distance between our treehouse and school is 4/10 of a mile. From the mall to the library, 2/10. And from the treehouse to the observatory is 2 and 3/10 of a mile. Today it's closer to 2 and 4/10. Why? It's because the universe is expanding.
[laughter] That's hysterical.
Now for the real reason. Gremlins.
Everyone knows they play tricks on humans. They mess with our computers and break mechanical stuff. Those crappy gremlins will even STEAL YOUR HAIR SCRUNCHIES. SEE, this is my last one.
It's not gremlins. You're always leaving your hair scrunchies on the floor where the cat steals them.
>> Butterball doesn't steal. Since we're at the observatory, let's do some research into Isaac's expanding universe theory.
>> Okay, this balloon will help explain what happens when the universe expands.
Think of these dots as galaxies. When the balloon is deflated, they're close together. Right now, blow up the balloon. icing. See how the galaxies move farther away from each other?
That's what the universe is doing. It's expanding.
>> Okay, who wants to be the first to tell me I was right?
>> Sorry, Isaac. Yes, it is true that the universe is expanding, but the road to the observatory is not.
Pagoras, Capernicus, Galileo, Einstein.
Like all the great minds before me, I refuse to give up on my theory.
I'm going to prove it by riding from here to the treehouse and recording the distance on the odometer. Observe.
I'm going to go get some more water.
Want some?
First the distance went up, then it went way down. Which leads me to the obvious conclusion, my odometer is broken.
>> Yeah, broken by gremlins.
It wasn't gremlins. Not everything can be proven with science. Just most things.
