Why Ancient Humans Worked Less Than You?
Added:You work eight, maybe 10 hours a day.
You have a fridge stocked with food, a supermarket 3 minutes away, food delivery at midnight if you want it. You have heating, electricity, a bed that doesn't require you to build it every night. Your ancestors had none of that.
They lived on a savanna surrounded by animals that would eat them. They had no storage, no tools beyond what they could carry, and no guarantee of eating tomorrow. So, here is the question. How many hours a week did they spend working just to stay alive? 15 to 20. That's the number. 15 to 20 hours a week to handle every single thing required to survive.
That's half a modern part-time job.
And that number comes from studying the last groups of humans who still live this way. The Hadza of Tanzania, the Kung San of the Kalahari, the Ju / 'hoansi of Namibia. These are some of the last hunter-gatherer groups left on Earth, and they still live something close to the original human pattern. In 1968, anthropologist Richard Lee published years of time-tracking data on the Kung. His finding: roughly 12 to 19 hours per week spent on actual food procurement, not working, not commuting, not answering emails, just the hours required to not starve.
In 1966, at a conference called Man the Hunter held at the University of Chicago, anthropologist Marshall Sahlins stood up and called our ancestors the original affluent society. Not because they had anything, because they wanted very little, and what they needed was almost always within reach. He called it the Zen road to affluence. Infinite desires met with limited means makes you poor. Limited desires met with adequate means makes you rich. By that logic, your ancestor sitting under a tree in the Kalahari was wealthier in the only resource that actually matters than almost anyone alive today. This video is going to walk through one day in the life of a hunter-gatherer, sunrise to fire.
And by the end of it, you're going to understand exactly how they pulled this off, why the number isn't a myth, and what changed to make you work more than they ever did. Let's start with waking up. You have no alarm. There is no alarm. What wakes you is temperature. In 2015, a team of researchers led by Gandhi Yetish published a study in Current Biology. They fitted members of the Hadza, the San, and the Tsimane of Bolivia with actigraphy devices, wristbands that track movement and sleep, and monitored them for months.
What they found broke a myth almost everyone believes. These groups do not sleep when the sun goes down.
They stay up 2 and 1/2 to 4 hours after sunset talking, sitting by fire, letting the world cool. They fall asleep when temperature drops. And they wake up before sunrise, not to light, but to cold. Temperature, not light, is what runs their clock. Sleep duration, 5.7 to 7.1 hours a night, less than what most sleep experts recommend for modern adults. And almost none of them have daytime naps, even though they spend hours outside in full sun. But here is the detail that should stop you. The San language has no word for insomnia. When researchers tried to explain the concept lying awake, unable to sleep, night after night the San struggled to understand what was being described.
Chronic insomnia in these groups runs at 1.5 to 2.5% In industrialized countries, it's 10 to 30%. Same species, same brain, different life. Completely different relationship with sleep.
Morning. After eating whatever was left from the night before, the group talks through the day. There is no meeting, no schedule, no one in charge. People decide what to do based on what they know how to do and what the camp needs.
Men go out to hunt. Women, usually in groups of three to eight, go out to gather. The men walk far.
Studies by Herman Pontzer and David Raichlen documented Hadzabe men averaging 12 to 14 km a day over rough terrain, tracking animals, following prints, reading grass. Women average around 9 km carrying children under two on their backs while digging tubers, pulling wild berries, hauling water. By any physical standard, these are hard-working people. But notice who else goes with the women, the grandmothers.
Researchers studying the Hadza have consistently found that post-menopausal women, women in their 50s, 60s, sometimes pushing 70, bring back more food per day than mothers in their 20s.
They walk 5 to 10 km without complaint.
They know every edible root within a 20-km radius. They are the most productive gatherers in the camp because they have had 50 years of practice and no infants slowing them down.
Anthropologists call this the grandmother hypothesis. It's one of the leading explanations for why human women are the only primate females who regularly survive for decades past the end of their reproductive years. In most species, when you can no longer produce offspring, evolution has no further use for you. But a grandmother who feeds her grandchildren increases the chance that her genes survive. That is why you exist. And the children come, too.
A 3-year-old Hadza girl walks beside her mother with a small stick and pokes at the dirt. By six, she can identify which plants are edible. By 10, she is meaningfully contributing to what the camp eats. Nobody teaches this in a classroom. Nobody schedules a lesson.
The knowledge transfers through proximity, through watching and doing, through spending every morning of childhood inside the work itself. And then comes the thing that upends everything you think you know about exercise. Pontzer's team published their energy expenditure findings in PLoS One in 2012. They used doubly labeled water, the gold standard method for measuring how many calories a body actually burns in a day.
The result, Hadzabe men burn roughly 2,600 kcal per day. Hadza women around 1,900.
After controlling for body size, those numbers are statistically indistinguishable from sedentary office workers in the West. The Hadza walk 12 km, you sit in a chair. Same calories burned. The explanation is what researchers call the constrained energy expenditure model. Move more and your body cuts spending elsewhere on inflammation, on immune response, on reproduction to keep the total budget flat. Exercise more doesn't mean burn more, it means redistribute. Your body is running on a fixed account and it rebalances without telling you.
What this means for the actual mechanics of their day, hunting doesn't look like the movies. There is no chase, there is mostly walking. Patient, quiet, slow walking through heat following tracks that might lead nowhere. Most hunts come back empty. The Hadza hunt with bows tipped in poison from the desert rose and even then a single large kill might happen once every several days. The work is the patience. The calories burned are modest. Noon, the sun is at its peak.
Everything stops. This is not laziness.
Continuing to work through midday heat on a savanna without water stations or shade means heatstroke and dehydration.
Stopping is the rational choice. The group finds shade. People rest.
No one supervises this. There is no clock. The body says stop, so they stop.
This rhythm hard effort in the cool morning, rest at midday, lighter activity in the afternoon is completely unlike the industrial schedule of fixed length shifts regardless of weather, temperature, or physical state. Even medieval European farmers worked more continuously than this. The body driven flexibility is one of the core reasons the weekly hour total stays as low as it does. Late afternoon, the group comes back together. Everything that comes back, tubers, berries, small game, honey, goes into a central pile. It doesn't belong to the person who found it. It belongs to the camp.
The Hadza language has a word za, which roughly means to give or share. It is one of the first words children learn.
They use it to ask for a piece of fruit or a taste of honey from whoever happens to have some. Sharing is not charity here. It is the operating system. You share because storage doesn't exist. You share because a camp that shares is a camp where everyone has an incentive to bring things back. You share because the person you feed today may be the one who finds water tomorrow. This is also why there is almost no hierarchy. You cannot accumulate power if you cannot accumulate food. Every evening, the pile is divided.
Sahlins was right about this part.
Affluence here doesn't mean having a lot. It means that whatever you need is available because someone in your network has it and will give it to you.
The wants are low enough that the supply almost always meets them. Now comes the part of the day that most people overlook entirely, and it might be the most important part. The fire comes up.
In 2014, anthropologist Polly Wiessner published a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. She had been recording conversations among the Ju/'hoansi San for over 40 years, from 1974 to 2013. She went through hours of recordings and coded them by topic and time of day.
During the day, 80% of conversations are practical. Who found what, who owes who, who broke an agreement, who has too much. Economic talk, conflict management, the logistics of staying alive. Then the fire starts. After dark, the same people, the same camp, the same exhausted bodies, and more than 80% of what they talk about is stories. Hunts that happened years ago, relatives in camps three days walk away, love, who did something funny, what happens after you die. The firelight and the stories run together for hours. Sometimes there is singing, sometimes dancing, often both. Wiessner argued that this wasn't entertainment in the modern sense. It was infrastructure.
Campfire storytelling is how the Ju/hoansi maintained relationships with people across hundreds of kilometers of desert without any written language or communication technology. The stories carried information, who could be trusted, where food was good last season, which exchange partners were reliable. Every story was data about the social world wrapped in narrative so it could be remembered and passed on. There is also something happening in the firelight itself that the daytime doesn't allow. Wiessner noted that firelight softens faces. It flattens the visual signals of dominance and status that are readable in full daylight.
The camp elder and the youngest hunter look more similar by firelight than they do at noon. That flattening matters. It creates a psychological space where people feel safer saying things they wouldn't say in the full light of day.
Disagreements that would harden into conflict at noon dissolve into story.
Grievances get processed sideways, embedded in a tale about someone who did something similar three seasons ago in another camp and how that worked out.
The fire was not just warmth. It was a social technology for managing the emotional temperature of a group of people who had nowhere else to go.
And the fire itself was older than any of this.
The earliest confirmed controlled fire is from Wonderwerk Cave in South Africa roughly a million years ago. Fire didn't just keep predators back. It extended the day. Before fire, when the sun went down, you went still. Every primate does. The dark belongs to predators with better night vision. Fire pushed that boundary back by hours. And those hours, that zone after sunset that no other species on Earth was using, became the time when something uniquely human happened. Not survival, not work, relationship, culture. The transmission of everything one generation had learned to the next.
Wiessner's conclusion, firelight may have been the original driver of human storytelling, imagination, and the kind of complex social reasoning that no other animal does at scale. Sitting around a fire at night wasn't leisure in the sense of wasted time, it was the engine of culture. Now, daylight comes back, you do it again. That is the full shape of a day. And the weekly total, when you add it up, sits somewhere between 15 and 20 hours of actual foraging effort. Add cooking, tool repair, child care, moving camp, and you get to something closer to 30 to 40 hours of total labor across everything.
Still well under what most full-time workers clock today. And with a flexibility and body-led rhythm that modern work has no equivalent for. The science behind this, and the academic debate it caused, traces back to that 1966 conference in Chicago. Lee's data on the Kung was controversial because it upended a Victorian assumption so deep nobody had thought to question it. The assumption was that primitive life was brutal, that survival was all-consuming, that leisure was a luxury of civilization. Lee's numbers said the opposite.
Anthropologist James Woodburn, studying the Hadza independently, found men spending less than 2 hours a day on food procurement averaged across the full year, and that they were, in his words, more interested in gambling than in the opportunities hunting presented. A Kung man, when asked why he didn't plant crops like neighboring groups, reportedly said, "Why would we when there are so many mongongo nuts in the world?" That answer is not laziness. It is a completely different accounting system for what a good life looks like.
So, what ended it? In 1987, Jared Diamond called the agricultural revolution the worst mistake in the history of the human race.
That's a strong claim, but he had the bones to back it up. Researchers excavating Dickson Mounds in Illinois, a site showing the transition from foraging to intensive maize farming around 1150 AD, found exactly what Diamond described. When the population shifted to farming, average male height dropped significantly. Life expectancy at birth fell from 26 years to 19. Iron deficiency anemia increased fourfold.
Enamel defects from nutritional stress, a sign that people were repeatedly malnourished during childhood, went up by nearly 50%. These were not healthier people. These were overworked, underfed, shorter people who lived and died younger than their foraging ancestors.
Why did they do it anyway? Because farming supports more people per square kilometer. Even if each individual lived worse, the total number of people who could survive on a given piece of land went up sharply. Agriculture didn't make individual lives better. It made larger groups possible. The civilizations it eventually produced were built on the backs of people who worked harder, ate worse, and died sooner than their hunting and gathering ancestors. And with farming came something hunter-gatherers almost never had, a boss. The moment food could be stored, the person who controlled the storage had power over the people who needed to eat.
For the first time in human history, some people could live off the labor of others without hunting or gathering anything themselves. Social hierarchy, which the Kung spent every joke and whispered conversation actively dismantling, became the organizing principle. The surplus created kings, and the people who fed the kings got shorter and died younger. And more recent evidence confirms the pattern is not limited to one site. In 2019, Mark Dyble and colleagues published a study in Nature Human Behavior on the Agta of the Philippines, a group currently in transition between foraging and farming.
The more farming a community did, the more hours people worked.
Fully foraging Agta communities averaged around 20 hours a week of out-of-camp labor. Communities that had shifted significantly into farming averaged 30 hours. Women in farming communities had about half the leisure time of women in foraging communities. The transition to agriculture didn't liberate people. It contracted their time and hit women the hardest. Now, the counter argument. Many anthropologists have pushed back on Sahlins and Lee's original figures. The criticism is straightforward. The 15 to 20-hour number counts only hunting and gathering. It doesn't count cooking, fetching water, making tools, nursing children, moving camp.
Add all of that in and the total rises to something closer to 35 to 45 hours across the full week. That is a legitimate point.
The raw foraging hours are not the complete of labor. But even at 40 hours total, that is still less than what factory workers in the late 1800s put in. During the Industrial Revolution, 60 to 70 hours a week was standard. 12 to 16 hours a day, 6 days a week, in conditions that make a Kalahari savanna look comfortable. The 8-hour work day was a hard-fought political achievement, not a natural feature of industrial society.
And since the mid-20th century, productivity has risen so sharply that a single modern worker now produces in about 11 hours what took 40 hours of labor in 1950. The efficiency gains are real. The extra time has not appeared.
It went somewhere else, into higher consumption, into economic structures that converted time savings into more goods rather than more rest. The question Sahlins was really asking was never just how many hours did hunter-gatherers work. The question was, what does it mean to be affluent? Is it having more or needing less? Your ancestors answered that question one way.
They capped their needs at a level the land could reliably meet, shared everything that came in so the individual was never fully exposed to a bad day, and spent the hours they didn't need for survival doing the things that made survival worth it. Talking, telling stories, sitting with people they had known their entire lives around a fire that pushed the dark back just far enough. They were not living in paradise. Children died. People got hurt. Disease moved through camps with nothing to stop it. Nobody is suggesting a return to that. Vaccines exist, antibiotics exist, clean water on demand exists. The trades that civilization made were real and they mattered.
But there was something in the original arrangement, some balance between effort and rest, between work and the social hours that came after that we have not managed to recover. Productivity kept climbing, hours didn't fall, the fire went out, the story stopped, and most people in modern societies are sitting with chronic sleep disorders that their ancestors didn't even have a word for, wondering why the weeks feel like they're disappearing and nothing ever feels like enough. The Hadza man who naps in the shade at noon is not behind.
He is not lazy. He has already done what the day required.
He is sitting inside the thing we keep telling ourselves we'll get to later once the work is finished. The work is never finished. That is not a coincidence. That is the design. The answer has been sitting in the archaeological record for 60 years. We found it in Lee's notebooks, in Ponser's calorie data, in Weisnerr's 40 years of recorded conversations, in the bones at Dickson Mounds. The formula for working less while staying alive was solved a very long time ago. It required two things: wanting less and sharing everything.
We abandoned both of those simultaneously somewhere around 10,000 years ago and we have been working overtime ever since trying to build our way back to what the Kalahari simply provided for free. That's all for today.
