YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN A TREE LIKE THIS! ACER PALMATUM 'MARMALADE'

[00:00:00]All right, y'all. The guys from Mr. Maple have returned to your YouTube screen to talk to you about one of our favorite Japanese maples, as we do frequently. [music] Guys, we are breaking out Acer palmatum 'Marmalade'.

[00:00:18]Now, when we bought this uh place in 2023, we found this amazing gem that Talon Buchholz had. It's Acer palmatum 'Marmalade'. And this is one of the best spring interest trees that I've ever seen in my life.

[00:00:30]>> I absolutely love 'Marmalade'. It might be my new favorite spring tree. Uh we put this here in front of a sea of Peve Starfish, so you can see the contrast.

[00:00:38]We will show you the sea of 'Marmalade' over here as well. It is absolutely glowing. This tree holds its color amazing. Now, 'Marmalade' was found here as a seedling at the Flordia Arboretum here at Buchholz Nursery. Talon actually found this tree under the giant 'Orange Dream'. We shot a Cultivar Highlight on that as well, so you definitely have to check that out. 'Marmalade' has very different colors, very different contrast. I absolutely think this might be just the most pinnacle of spring interest maples for me. I love its contrast. I love its dynamic color. When it first leaves out, if you're giving it more sun, you can get some of that bold, bold orange color going on. But that color throughout the season does not stop.

[00:01:15]>> Yeah, we were talking about that spring color. When you see this thing when it first leaves out, it's a bold orange red. That is one of the most intense spring interest things you can imagine.

[00:01:24]But like many of the spring interest trees, that color fades. Now, almost all other Japanese maples, when they fade, go to green.

[00:01:31]Not this one. 'Marmalade' gets you some really nice shades of orange with highlights of yellow and green. I mean, it is super bright and vibrant even a month and a half after it's leafed out.

[00:01:44]We've shot this tree in June before, and it looks the same with amazing yellows and oranges popping all across it. All right, now guys, for most people in hotter zones, you're going to want to give 'Marmalade' some light day shade for its best color. Early morning sun. I have had a lot of people singing its praises even in Greenville, South Carolina and some different warm climates in more sunny spots. We're still trialing it out for sunnier spots.

[00:02:06]I absolutely love the color on this though. The color contrast is nuts.

[00:02:10]This one is a showstopper. Now, it does want to be very multi-stemmed. This is a typical characteristic of this tree.

[00:02:16]Typically around a foot of growth a year is pretty common and very multi-stemmed in that layering. So, you get a thick plant with a lot of branching.

[00:02:25]>> I'm truly in love with this. This may be my favorite Japanese maple right now.

[00:02:29]Marmalade, this orange you're seeing across the top, it is just so vibrant.

[00:02:34]And you get that yellows down here. I mean, this whole thing is a contrast with itself, but it contrasts with everything else. This is going to be something that's more brighter picked up colors and then gets hints of orange across it as well. For a maple that the bloom or the flowers, this one continues to essentially bloom all throughout the season.

[00:02:53]>> It's a rebloomer.

[00:02:54]>> Yeah, it's a rebloomer. That just keeps on going and keeps on going and people want more and it just keeps bringing it each and every season. What's up, y'all?

[00:03:01]I'm in this sea of marmalade here. If I were going to eat a Japanese maple, it'd probably be some marmalade. It sounds delicious. I love this one, guys. Now, J.D. Vertrees, he had his trifecta for fall color. He recommended Ichigyoji, Hogyoku, and Osakazuki. So, he said these are like the the perfect three pairings for fall color.

[00:03:20]I've got my own. I've got a spring color interest one. I think it's really fun.

[00:03:25]My favorite pairings with marmalade would be Mila and Naniwa beni. I think Mila, Naniwa beni, and marmalade together are the perfect spring trifecta. Absolutely love the color contrast. Marmalade being one of my all-time favorite spring colors, kind of putting it with the ultimate pink, red, and the ultimate purple lavender, I think is a fun way of growing this one.

[00:03:44]Similar leaf structures, but different colors. Absolutely love it. If you're looking for the perfect spring trifecta, think about marmalade, Mila, and Nanny Wa Benny.

[00:03:54]I think you could put anything next to Marmalade and it's going to look amazing.

[00:03:58]I mean, you can pair this with literally any conifer Japanese maple and you're going to have a very dynamic contrast.

[00:04:03]Uh this one it just screams color. It really brings it. Uh you know, it can be so orange that it's almost pink at times. You almost get a pinkish new growth on this that even contrast with that golden yellow.

[00:04:14]For me, this is one of the more dynamic trees I've ever seen and I think it's going to be one we're going to be producing a lot of here at Mr. Maple.

[00:04:20]It's going to be a staple for years to come. Um Marmalade I don't know anything better for spring color. This one for me is kind of the peak.

[00:04:29]Grab you one here today. Maybe you can pair it with a trifecta, Matt's trifecta of spring colors.

[00:04:35]>> Guys, check out the colors on this. It's outrageous. I mean, we've got some orange highlights right across through here. We've got yellows back in here, some yellow greens across here. The whole overall picture when you back up and see this is just highlighter, just orangey pink. It is insane what the color contrast can be with Marmalade in the landscape and garden. To me, there's not another tree that can give you this dynamic color not just in the spring color whenever it leafs out. You've got that pink orange color right when it first leafs out. But all throughout the spring, not just early spring mid to late spring, come back check this out.

[00:05:12]You come back and check this in early summer. This thing's still putting on a show and I think that's what makes Marmalade stand out from the crowd of spring interest trees. Many Japanese maples can put on that first flush that are fantastic. But this one keeps bringing it each and every season and to me, that's one of the reasons why I'm going to say it right now, this is my favorite Japanese maple. Uh and guys, this thing is a rock star.

Absolutely love this one. Now, one thing of note, we have some friends that have also named a tree with a similar name. There is an orange marmalade that is a seedling from Katsura. I actually own that tree as well. Not the same tree, different color patterns than marmalade.

[00:06:07]>> Yeah, guys. Just remember, marmalade has that orange dream parentage that gives you that yellow color longer throughout the season. To me, it's hard to beat this one. It is beautiful and it's a tree you're definitely going to love in your garden. I'm telling you right now, it's hard for me to ever to say I've got my favorite.
