Attenborough's Most Dangerous Encounters: Anaconda & Gorilla!

[00:00:00]At number seven, deep in South America, Attenborough encountered one of the largest snakes on Earth.

[00:00:06]The green anaconda. These snakes can grow over 9 m long and are capable of crushing prey to death [music] underwater. While filming in swampy river systems, the crew located a huge anaconda hidden beneath muddy water. But during [music] the encounter, visibility became almost impossible. Nobody could clearly [music] see where the snake's head was or where its body ended.

[00:00:28]Attenborough remained remarkably calm on camera, but behind the scenes, the crew admitted they were genuinely nervous.

[00:00:35]One wrong movement in murky water could have triggered a [music] strike and help would have been a very long way away.

[00:00:41]Number six, one of Attenborough's most famous moments nearly became one of his most dangerous.

[00:00:48]While filming mountain gorillas in Africa, >> [music] >> he found himself surrounded by enormous silverbacks. A fully-grown silverback gorilla can weigh over 180 kg and possesses [music] incredible strength.

[00:01:00]If threatened, they can be devastatingly violent. During filming, [music] one dominant male became increasingly uncomfortable with the crew's presence.

[00:01:08]The gorilla began displaying warning signs, heavy breathing, [music] eye contact, short aggressive movements.

[00:01:14]Attenborough stayed completely still because any [music] sudden movement could have triggered an attack. For several tense seconds, the gorilla stood only meters away. Then [music] finally, it relaxed and moved on. The footage became legendary, but it could easily have ended very differently. [music]
