Lost Black Beach, located south of Wilmington, was a significant cultural hub in the 1920s where the Freeman family owned miles of beachfront and built Seabreeze, featuring 31 juke joints, hotels, and dance floors that hosted legendary performers like James Brown, Fats Domino, and Ike and Tina Turner. Historians credit this location as the birthplace of shag dancing and American beach music, as white teenagers from neighboring beaches came to learn dance moves. The beach was destroyed by Hurricane Hazel in 1954, and its historical significance was largely forgotten, making it a lost cultural landmark.
